What is a Front End Developer?

The front end is the visible part of the application that users interact with, so a Front End Developer designs and maintains what users see in the browser. The front end is often referred to as the “client side” while the back end (which focuses on the server, database, and applications that power the front end) is referred to as the “server side.” A Front End Web Developer will work with languages like CSS and JavaScript as well as some frameworks. A Back End Web Developer works almost exclusively with databases, logic, and server side languages like PHP.

How to Learn Front End Development

Coding bootcamps are the quickest way to become a Front End Web Developer. Most bootcamps teach full stack development and graduates can choose a specialty like front end development. Coding bootcamps typically teach both technical skills and job hunting skills which help more than 80% of graduates secure jobs after bootcamp. Bootcamps can run anywhere from 8-16 weeks and on average cost $15,000 USD, although many bootcamps now offer a variety of financing options.

Types of Front End Development Jobs

Front End Developers can look forward to a wide variety of jobs since no two companies have the exact same expectations of a programmer who specializes in front end technologies. A remote Front End Web Developer job is also a distinct possibility. Here is a list of the most frequent Front End Development jobs for bootcampers:

  • Junior Front End Developer
  • Full Stack Developer
  • Full Stack Web Developer
  • Web Developer
  • Front End Engineer
  • JavaScript Developer
  • CSS/HTML Developer
  • Front End Web Designer
  • UI/UX Designer
  • Front End Quality Assurance

What Does a Front End Developer Do?

A Front End Developer manages what users see in their browser. They design, analyze code, and debug the client side of an application. This makes them responsible for the look, feel, and design of a website or web application. A Front End Developer is also expected to have some knowledge of the back end as well as frameworks they could be working with.

What Kind of Skills Do Front End Developers Need?

Knowledge of front end languages, frameworks, and critical thinking are essential parts of the developer’s toolbox. Because Front End Developers often work on a team, recruiters are also looking for strong evidence of soft skills. Thankfully, most coding bootcamps teach their students how to demonstrate their transferable skills as well as their technical skills.

Soft Skills Needed by Front End Developers

Soft skills that employers look for include the ability to communicate clearly and ask the right questions. Employers also look for developers who are good at problem-solving and working with a team. Other beneficial soft skills include:

  • Time management
  • Creativity
  • Organization
  • Attention to detail

Hard Skills Needed by Front End Developers

Job Market and Salary Insights

The job outlook for Front End Developers is positive, with the overall employment levels projected to increase by 16% over the next decade, which is faster than the average for all occupations in the U.S. This translates into approximately 19,000 openings each year through 2032. The median annual wage for a Front End Designer is $98,540 as of May, 2023.

There are several factors that can affect the salary for Front End Developers, such as:

  • Education — Those with a degree in a computer-related field may earn more.

I learned from a few courses in Coderhouse, and in pretty much all of them i saw a strong attention to the student. They generally work hard to make the student learn and be able to workout through their difficulties. I would improve their platform and website, in my time it was not working at a 100%.

      “A transformative experience”

I recently completed the Codeworks bootcamp, and I can confidently say that it was an incredibly enriching experience. The course is meticulously designed, starting with the fundamentals of JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, and progressively moving on to full-stack development using Node.js and popular frontend frameworks like Angular and React. The curriculum is well-crafted and ensures that by the end of the course, students are well-prepared to build robust, full-stack applications. One of the standout aspects of Codeworks is the instructor coordinator, Brent. He leads the teaching team with a clear and effective approach to instruction. Brent emphasizes problem-solving and self-reliance, which really pushes students to develop their critical thinking and coding skills. While the course is undeniably intense, Brent and the other instructors strike a perfect balance between encouraging independence and providing support. I had the pleasure of meeting with Brent a few times, and each interaction reinforced how dedicated and thoughtful the teaching approach at Codeworks is. The bootcamp is demanding, but students who come in with the right mindset—curiosity, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to step outside their comfort zones—will thrive. The only instances where I saw students struggle were when they weren't interested in challenging themselves beyond their existing knowledge. That said, even with my 10 years of coding experience, I found the bootcamp to be incredibly valuable. The environment at Codeworks is nothing short of inspiring. The positive atmosphere and the constant encouragement to tackle ambitious projects allowed me to grow in ways I never expected. The course is also great for beginners. Many in my cohort came in with little or no coding experience, and they thrived. The precourse material, completed as part of the application process, does an excellent job of teaching the fundamentals of JavaScript. We also spent the first few days of the bootcamp recapping this material in more detail, providing a solid foundation from which to build for the rest of the course. This approach makes the course approachable for beginners while still being challenging enough for those with more experience. At Codeworks, students also create their own projects, entirely led by themselves, which allows them to build incredible full-stack applications to add to their portfolios. These projects push their skills to a level that truly sets them apart. The experience of working on these projects closely mimics the environments developers encounter every day in the workplace, providing invaluable real-world experience. Moreover, Codeworks sets you up brilliantly to enter employment afterward if you wish to get a job in computer science. Maria runs the careers department and is available to help Codeworks alumni long after graduation. The structure of the course lends itself toward employment. Students cover the main tasks that junior developers will encounter in the workforce, making them far more attractive to employers. Not only do they develop strong individual coding abilities, but they also gain skills in writing tests and collaborating within a team on projects using industry-standard tools such as Git and GitHub. This knowledge of testing frameworks and methodologies, as well as proficiency with versioning tools, makes Codeworks graduates particularly attractive to potential employers. In the final week, Codeworks prepares students for job hunting, helping them get ready to enter the job market. Maria assists students in finding resources in their area for job postings and supports each student in crafting the perfect CV, LinkedIn profile, and GitHub. By the end of the week, each student leaves Codeworks with a finely crafted professional persona, ready to apply for a wide range of coding-related jobs. After graduation, students can choose to participate in weekly group calls to support their job search, and Maria is more than happy to do one-on-one calls when needed. The community built by the students and staff at Codeworks is outstanding. Every student learns from one another and pushes each other to get the best out of themselves. Rather than competing against one another, the students work together, exchanging ideas and knowledge. This sense of community and the drive to build everyone up creates an incredibly supportive atmosphere to enter every day. The same is true of the teacher-student relationship. It’s far more of a mentorship role than that of a typical teacher. By not even the end of the course, more like halfway through, we all felt that the staff on the course were friends and mentors. Rather than just having teachers, I now feel like I have a set of mentors who I can turn to even after finishing the course. It’s great being able to chat with them and exchange ideas and knowledge. They all have incredible depths of knowledge to draw from, and their insights are invaluable. I would recommend being in-person if at all possible, as it helps develop this relationship with the staff and fellow students, and I think these relationships are the most valuable part of the course. I was on the London campus, and it was an incredible experience. We interacted with the other campuses and remote students every day. The remote students are also incredibly well supported and had a great time, but a few admitted that they wished they had chosen to join one of the campuses. They could see how much it helped us to have a physical space and surrounding ourselves with other students and staff added another dimension to our experience. In summary, Codeworks is more than just a coding bootcamp—it’s a transformative experience. Whether you’re a beginner or have years of experience like myself, you’ll find the curriculum, the instructors, and the overall environment to be top-notch. I highly recommend Codeworks to anyone looking to take their coding skills to the next level, build strong professional relationships, and set themselves up for a successful career in tech.

      “The Claim Academy DIsaster”

I recently attended Claim Academy for 3 weeks .Our First week the instructor went on vacation , and there wasn't a backup instructor in place. They called in favor to have friends in the industry teach. I was like ok whatever, but due to the mixing of instructors, they were just teaching random things and there was no curriculum for them to follow. By week three we had made it to our fourth instructor , who openly admitted he didn't know what was going on and wasn't a very good teacher. He had been asked last minute to fill in until the main instructor returned. In week three we spent an hour going over day one material because no one told the instructor what plan to follow. That same day we found out our main instructor had put his two weeks in and only had a week left. Claim academy had been trying to hire a second instructor for well over two months , and they also were under review from the VA due to excessive complaints about the program. I left the next day after finding out the instructor was leaving. Claim Academy is a burning ship and i do not recommend. I will be pursuing coding at another bootcamp, stay tuned for my next review.

      “Worth it!”

Coming from a non-technical background, I found the course at Boolean to be exactly what I needed. The main appeal of a bootcamp for me was having a structured learning journey, something I knew I would struggle with if I were self-teaching. And that’s exactly what I received. The curriculum was thoughtfully designed for beginners, starting with the basics of JavaScript and gradually building on each concept. This step-by-step approach made it easy to follow and understand, even without prior coding experience. The tutors at Boolean (I had Ezekiel and Carlo) are highly knowledgeable and always ready to help. The support provided throughout the course is amazing, any time I had a question or needed assistance, a quick direct message was all it took to get the help I needed. I also highly recommend taking advantage of the opportunity to go above and beyond the standard course. Most exercises have extension tasks designed to deepen and extend your skills, which I found incredibly valuable. By the end of the course, I felt confident in my ability to build full-stack applications, utilising both frontend and backend skills. After completing the initial 6 months, you also receive 6 months of career support. This part of the course far exceeded my expectations. Ivana and Giorgio (my career coaches) provided fantastic support with tailoring my CV, updating my LinkedIn profile, and refining my portfolio. They also led weekly career workshops and 1:1 interview prep sessions to help me prepare for the interview process. In addition, Luca provided valuable tech interview prep and coding practice, which was incredibly helpful in building my confidence for technical interviews. Overall, this was a fantastic opportunity, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to switch to tech or develop their skills. A massive thank you to the team at Boolean for their continuous dedication and support!

      “Beginner-friendly, accommodating and good instructors”

Embarking on a journey to learn something new can be intimidating, but my experience with beginner-friendly classes at Zuitt was nothing short of exceptional. From the outset, the environment exuded warmth and encouragement, making it an ideal space for novices to thrive. One of the standout features of these classes is their unwavering commitment to being beginner-friendly. The instructors have a remarkable ability to break down complex concepts into digestible, easy-to-understand nuggets of knowledge. Whether you're stepping into the world of painting, coding, or dance, the instructors patiently guide you through the basics, ensuring a solid foundation before moving on to more advanced techniques. The accommodating nature of the classes is truly commendable. I found the instructors to be approachable and understanding, creating an atmosphere where questions are not just welcomed but encouraged. They foster an environment that embraces curiosity, making the learning process feel like a collaborative journey rather than a solo endeavor. This inclusivity is particularly reassuring for beginners who may feel hesitant about asking questions or seeking clarification. “Excellent Learning & Career Experience”

My experience with Scaler Academy has been extremely positive, and I can genuinely say that Scaler has played a very important role in my career growth. The learning journey not only helped me strengthen my technical skills but also gave me the confidence and exposure needed to take the next step in my professional career. One of the things I appreciated the most about Scaler was the way they taught concepts. Even complex and difficult topics were broken down and explained in a very simple, structured, and practical way. The curriculum helped me build a much stronger understanding of the fundamentals while also giving me opportunities to apply what I learned through practical problems and projects. The continuous learning environment motivated me to keep improving and become more confident in my technical abilities. Scaler also gave me excellent career opportunities and guidance. Through Scaler, I was able to get an opportunity with Emergent AI, which was a significant milestone in my career. The placement cell was genuinely supportive throughout the process and provided valuable guidance and assistance. The overall placement experience was very well organized, and I really appreciated the effort the team put into helping students reach the right opportunities. Another aspect that stood out to me was the overall support. Whenever I had questions or needed assistance, the support team was responsive, approachable, and helpful. Having that kind of support throughout the learning and career journey made the overall experience much smoother. Looking back, Scaler has given me much more than just technical knowledge. It helped me develop a better learning mindset, improve my problem-solving skills, build confidence, and prepare myself for real-world opportunities. The combination of quality teaching, practical learning, career support, placement assistance, and overall support made the experience truly valuable for me. I’m really grateful for everything I learned at Scaler and for the opportunities it helped me discover. I would definitely recommend Scaler to anyone who is serious about improving their technical skills, growing professionally, and looking to make a meaningful transition or advancement in their career.

“Okay.. All Over The Place and extremely confusing”

The course is good, the instructors are extremely nice, responsive and helpful, BUT the course is ALLLLLL over the place. examples are extremely confusing (seem totally misplaced or irrelevant) and include things you haven't even learned yet in the example code, which makes it way more confusing. I found there was no flow of content its here and there then going back then too far forward and its overall an extremely hard course due to this reason.

“My fast track journey to a developer job ”

I have a Master’s degree in Information Systems and when I graduated, I realised that I lack the required business experience and technical experience to get a job. It was a heart-breaking moment for me and the only job that I could get was in IT support. I worked there for a year and I did excel while working there. I was an IT helpdesk support technician and was working in Perth with some of the largest multinational corporations such as Chevron and BHP Billiton. I was highly paid but did not have job satisfaction. After one year I quit but didn’t want to go to University again and repeat the same cycle of lack of experience. Surprisingly, Universities cannot provide an internship to their students that lays the basic foundation for someone changing careers to get their foot in the door. Luckily, I found Coder Academy (CA) which was providing internships for all their students. It helped me bridge the gap between education and industry. I was hired after my internship by the same company and many other of my classmates also got the job via the internship. Coder Academy has included building a portfolio which is very impressive to some of my potential employers. Also, the side projects we did during the course gave me something to show my coding skills and interviewers something to talk about in the interview. It was a very intensive course and at times I felt breaking down due to pressure and timely submission of projects. Many of my classmates felt giving up the course multiple time during the course. But it was all worthwhile in the end. In my cohort, the course was divided into three terms. In the first term, we started the course with Ruby as it is really easy to learn and built a terminal application. Then we moved on to Ruby on Rails in the second term and built a two-sided e-commerce website. Then in the third term had MERN/PERN stack and built something of our choice. This project was supposed to be a client project to give us a feeling of the real world, but COVID happened and the project was changed. During the course, we got a fair amount of support from educators, but not enough. Most of the times I found myself dealing with my problems by myself. That acted as a blessing in disguise, as in the real world being independent and able to solve the coding issue fast and on my own has helped me impress my employers. I did feel that Ruby and Rails are a bit outdated technology and not many people use it. But guess what, as I’m writing this, I’m moving to my second job and it is in React/Rails stack. But definitely, there are few jobs for Rails and more for PHP and C# .Net stack for the backend. It would have been great to include these stacks but can be learned on my own. I also found that the material covered in flex track was more in details and the projects were not rushed as they were for us in the fast track. I’ll suggest someone coming from a non-technical background, it would be easier to pursue flex track which is 10 months course. It will be 4 more months compared to fast track, but definitely worth the time as the curriculum has heaps of concepts that overwhelmed many of my classmates many times during the course. Overall, I would say it was a great experience. It was stressful and intense and I’d say not for everyone. But if one is focused and determined, I believe it is worth the effort and time one put into it.

“The best place to start your new career as a software engineer!”

I really enjoyed my time at iO Academy. I chose this bootcamp mostly because it seemed to me that they proposed the most complete curriculum and they did not disappoint! It was a very intense learning experience, but it is delivered in the best conditions: small cohorts (up to 8 students) so it is always possible to ask questions and interact with the trainers amazing trainers, always available and supportive carefully crafted curriculum, it really felt like they refined it year after year to find the best way and timing to go through the curriculum, so I never felt overwhelmed I also want to point out that they put a really big emphasis on how to work as a software engineer (e.g. working in an Agile team) and not just how to code. I found this extremely valuable (maybe more than the coding?) as it is a huge part of the job and I arrived in my 1st software engineer position really well prepared and knowing what to expect. On the coding side, they were dedicated to teaching us best coding practices. I am currently working in my 1st position as a software developer and so far my line manager has been pleasantly surprised by how much I've learned at iO Academy! It took me a 4/5 months to land a job but the job market is a bit tough at the moment. I got some valuable advice from their career consultant which helped me land my current position. I would not necessarily expect to just walk into a job straight after the bootcamp (some of the students of my cohort did though!). iO Academy was definitely worth the time and the investment, and I would totally do it again!

The program focuses on fundamentals of programming and software engineering including core problem solving, programming language fundamentals, object-oriented programming, networking, databases, and guides students through a structured path of building up proficiency in software development.  The program consists of two main phases: Core Curriculum and Capstone. It takes approximately 1200-1800 hours (8-16+ months) to complete, and students can choose either a Ruby or JavaScript focused track through Core. After that, there is an optional and admissions-based Capstone Program that's focused on helping students acquire career-launching opportunities. “Absolutely worth the effort”

Launch School is one of those things in life that you give a shot and it ends up being a cornerstone to your life journey. It is absolutely worth every penny, second, and drop of sweat you give it. It is not a "bootcamp" in that you can hope to achieve a career transition or new skillset in 3 months and be going about your new business, or passively spend a few minutes a day and hope to divine a whole profession's worth of insight. The curriculum is long and dense, but perfectly curated to optimize the time you'll spend on it. No frivolous "micro-learning" or shortcuts. I guarantee you that if you're serious about learning this and you're willing to put the effort in, you will absolutely get what you want out of it. I'm seriously so much better off for the career transition I made and could not have done it without Launch School. A special shoutout, too, to their Capstone program. Their Core program feels like a mountain to climb and took me a good year and a half to complete it, but after looking ahead to the job market, I realized how much left there was to learn. They do a fantastic job building on the fundamentals that you've mastered and wrap around it the necessary knowledge of how to plug into a SWE position. Most importantly, too, they offer plenty of job-hunting assistance. Anyone who's spent a while looking for jobs knows how draining it is and having the resources and community backing you up is paramount to keeping a level head and putting your best foot forward on the next interview. The Capstone program is pricey but genuinely the most worthwhile expense I've ever had. If you're still not sure of whether Launch School is for you, dig into the preparatory reading (completely free, at least it was when I went through LS). If it's meant to be, you'll be super jazzed to give it your all after the first few reading assignments. Either way, best of luck whoever's reading this!
