What is Data Science?
Data science is a multidisciplinary field that combines computer science and statistics. With so much data being produced every day, data science makes it possible to draw useful insights from datasets that may be too large for traditional statistics to analyze. This data is often called "big data,” and can include anything from analyzing complex genomic structures to interpreting handwriting to optimizing a marketing strategy. And data science is not limited to just numbers! Data science finds patterns in all unstructured sets, including text, images, and audio files.
How to Learn Data Science
The best data science course for you depends on your learning style, career goals, availability, etc. Here's our advice for choosing the right data bootcamp and what you can expect:
- Examine the curriculum – Does the bootcamp teach the most modern data science tools, programming languages, and skills?
- Ask About Projects – At a good data science bootcamp, you'll build at least 2-3 projects using real-world data sets!
- Meet the Instructors – Do the bootcamp instructors have qualifications like quantitative degrees, master’s degrees, or even PhDs? This is much more common in the world of data science bootcamps.
- Ask About Outcomes – Ask the school for their CIRR report or job outcomes report, read data science bootcamp alumni reviews, and even reach out to alumni on LinkedIn to ask questions.
Data Science bootcamps can cost between $10,000 and $20,000. However, many data science bootcamps offer scholarships and financing options to make tuition affordable. There are also fellowships and free data science bootcamps, such as Insight Data Science.
Types of Data Science Jobs
There are a wide variety of data science jobs, and if there's one thing that we've learned after interviewing so many data science bootcamp graduates, it's that no two companies use the same job titles. Common job responsibilities of data scientists include data engineering, machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), data cleaning, and data analysis.
The median yearly salary for a Data Scientist is $108,020. Here is a list of the most frequent data science job titles for bootcampers:
- Data Engineer
- Machine Learning Engineer
- Data Scientist/Software Engineer
- Big Data Analytics Consultant
- Decision Scientist
- Data/Business Analyst
- Data Journalist
- Financial Analyst
- Product Analyst
- Database Administrator
What Does a Data Scientist Do?
In general, a Data Scientist analyzes, organizes, and interprets complex digital data. A Data Scientist’s responsibilities will vary, depending on the type and size of company they work for. For example, a Data Scientist at a startup may be responsible for data engineering as well as data cleaning. A Data Scientist at a larger company, such as a consulting firm, may be directly working with clients to build dashboards for their teams or they may be devising models to better predict trends for shareholders.
What Kind of Skills Do Data Scientists Need?
While math and coding skills are an essential part of data science, business intelligence and a scientific approach are key to making sense of data. Most data science students have a previous background in STEM, but overall, data science students and professionals are detail-oriented and excel at problem-solving, logical reasoning, and communication.
Hard Skills for Data Scientists
Here is a quick list of data science skills and technologies used in the field and often taught at data science bootcamps:
Soft Skills Needed by Data Scientists
Data scientists need more than tech skills; they need creativity, foresight, and the ability to communicate their findings to a variety of stakeholders. Other soft skills needed by Data Scientists include:
- Curiosity
- Critical thinking
- Flexibility
- Problem-solving
- Emotional intelligence
- Time management
Job Market and Salary Insights
The job market outlook for Data Scientists is very positive, with a projected 35% job growth from 2022 to 2032, significantly higher than the average for all occupations. This translates to approximately 17,700 openings for data scientists over the next decade. Data Scientists can expect a $108,020 median salary as of May 2023. Other factors that may affect the salary earned by a Data Scientist include:
- Location: Those in larger cities or “tech hubs” may earn more.
- Experience: The more years you have in your career, the more you'll earn. An entry-level data scientist can earn an average of $86,906, while someone at a senior level may earn, on average, $126,631.
- Education: Data Scientists with advanced degrees are likely to earn higher salaries.
FAQ Section
How do you start a career in data science?
Many Data Scientists start their careers in academia. If you have a bachelor's degree or PhD in a quantitative field, you're already close to a data science career. A data science fellowship like Insight Data Science would be a fantastic option.
Most data science bootcamps require students to have a degree in STEM and an aptitude for math and statistics. Then, you’ll be ready to apply to data science bootcamps, typically intensive 3- to 6-month programs. Data science bootcamps prepare graduates for entry-level and junior data science jobs, such as Data Analyst, Data Scientist, Machine Learning Engineer, and Data Engineer.
Keep in mind that a data science bootcamp is not a traditional coding bootcamp. In addition to learning programming languages, such as Python and R, data science bootcamps teach students how to extract valuable knowledge from large datasets using analytical and programming skills.
Is data science a good career?
According to US News and World Report, data science ranks number four on the list of the best tech jobs, largely due to the higher salaries and low unemployment rates. It also offers opportunities for career growth, work-life balance, and a low-to-moderate stress level.
Why is data science a growing field?
With everyone from businesses to non-profits to the government collecting data, there is a high demand for turning that data into smart business decisions. With the increase in AI and machine learning, companies will need people who can collect, analyze and interpret data, and turn it into profitable solutions.

I have been using Simplilearn to learn new skills through online courses, and my experience has been quite good. One thing I really like is that it offers short courses from reputed tech companies such as Google Cloud, Amazon AWS, and Microsoft. This makes it easier to explore different topics without having to spend too much time on each course. Another useful feature is the free certificate after completing a course and a small quiz. I also find the app simple to navigate, so it is easy to find courses and keep track of what I have completed. One thing I feel could be improved is the video quality option. It would be helpful if users could change the video quality according to their internet connection. Overall, Simplilearn has helped me a lot in building my CV and updating my LinkedIn profile with the courses I have completed. I would definitely recommend it to students and others who want to learn online and earn certificates for free.

Michael Evan Lauck II Verified via LinkedInStudent • Course: Data Analytics Career Track • Online“Buyer Beware – Misleading Job Guarantee & Poor Support”
I enrolled in this program in 2020 based on their heavy marketing of a “job guarantee” and a claimed 99% placement rate. Like many others, I trusted those promises — enough that I even convinced my mother to help pay for the tuition. I worked through the coursework, completed my projects, and actively applied for jobs. When a job offer I received was rescinded, the program’s career support proved ineffective. My assigned career coach offered little practical help, and I later found that multiple other students had similar complaints. Eventually, my applications slowed because the market had shifted, but I still expected the “guarantee” to mean what any reasonable person would think it means: If you can’t get me into a job, you refund my tuition. Instead, they tried to offer a fraction of what I paid — at first misrepresenting the math (calling $1,100 “25%” of tuition when it was really 20%), and only correcting it after I pointed it out. When I pressed for the full refund I believe I’m owed, I was met with PR-style responses, LinkedIn blocking from staff, and an unwillingness to acknowledge their own marketing implied far more than they delivered. This entire experience has left me financially strained, emotionally drained, and with zero results in the career I trained for. I’ve since connected with other former students who feel misled or abandoned by the program after paying thousands. If you’re considering this course, know that their “job guarantee” is not what you think it is. Read every word of their terms (which they will lean on to deny refunds) and don’t expect meaningful accountability if things go wrong. There are other learning options that don’t involve misleading promises or playing games with people’s livelihoods.

In terms of support staff, Thinkful is a great community of people that want you to succeed in this field. The majority of instructors are understanding of your position and are patient in trying to help or direct you to people who can help. My mentor was nice and I gained some insights into the field. The career services staff are also very knowledgeable about current hiring practices and are a great resource as well! As someone who attended business school and had experience in Excel and Python, I felt a little underwhelmed with the Python portion of the curriculum. That was one of my main reasons for going through the program. Python is at the very end, and you spend only 15% of your time working with it. A good portion of the curriculum is spent on learning "soft skills" as they say, which means your assignments are building a resume, networking on LinkedIn, practicing interviewing, and presenting PowerPoints. The other main reason I chose this program is because of the tuition refund guarantee. WARNING: in order to fully qualify for the guarantee, you must jump through all their requirements for the learning course AND the careers course (6 months after graduation). This is a total of 10 months following their policies, which are quite restrictive. To me, it seems they built their policies so that you could be hired ASAP rather than working with you to find a quality job in your desired industry. Most of the jobs you will see are startup tech companies, or big names in business, tech, or finance (because everyone is hiring "data analysts"). Also, the cost of this program is very high and you're not getting the campus experience that they had before the pandemic. So, if you already have a bachelor's/business experience, I would recommend looking into other self-taught programs that are cheaper or W3 schools' online tutorials until they start offering in-person again.

Mehmet Emre Toktay Verified via LinkedInStudent • Course: Data Scientist • Online“Really Poor Customer Service”
Udacity used to be a great online education platform that I recommended to friends and colleagues. Unfortunately, that's no longer the case. I've purchased three Nanodegree courses from them, and I was initially fascinated by their project ideas, reviews, comments, and mentors when I first discovered the platform. In this era, thanks to sharing enthusiasts and the developer community, you can access all the knowledge or projects that Udacity can offer. This is true for most platforms, so what you pay for is the educational support from real people, customer support, certification value, and user-friendly workspaces/websites. At Udacity, mentors generally help you out quickly when you raise a question, which is great. The value of certification depends on your country, so I won't comment on that. Now, let's discuss the red flags that have made me stop using this platform. I'll also share my detailed recent experience. Especially after the new update, the website and workspace are a mess, almost looking like an unfinished website. It's definitely not user-friendly. The same goes for their workspace. For example there is data that can't be downloaded due to sensitive information, and you have an AI project. It's normal to wait 4-5 hours for your train data, but in their workspace, it can be interrupted because their system automatically logs you off or experiences at least one or two crashes in day at Jupyter. This means you have to start over. Your code will be there, but you have to run every line again. Regarding customer support: at Udacity, there's never a chance to talk with real support; there's an AI chatbot (Seb) that only sends emojis and doesn't provide any useful information. They added UdacityGPT, which is incapable of answering questions. They charge money per course per month but don't provide support within 72 hours. No one cares about you after you pay. I hope people will see this post before purchasing. Also, concerning reviewers, if they're busy, they don't care about you and can even refuse to review your project. For example, if you're near to repaying next month and close to finishing your project, might reviewers will use up all the deadline and can make excuses not to check your project. If you ask for help from support, good luck – you have to wait at least 72 hours, which might only result in a response asking you a question in return. In my capstone project, I shared my repo, code, and blog articles. In this course, I took lessons on coding and GitHub, but not on how to write articles, which makes sense because writing and sharing articles is a personal choice. In my project submission, the reviewer refused to do a review because they believe I shared too much code in the article, which definitely does not make sense. I am not sharing this article as a Udacity employee; this is my personal area and my personal choice. There was no rule in the project rubric stating that I can't share code in my article. The funny part is that, because of this, the reviewer did not do any review for my GitHub repo and code. I am here to learn coding and data science, which should be our primary goal, but this reviewer does not seem to care about this. For now, I have clearly told the reviewer that it's my choice, and if there are any missing parts, they should address them in the review and provide me with some examples. Also, please help me understand the idea of making a perfect article if my code is not right. Let's say there is a critical mistake in my project; I would have to change the entire article. I don't understand this logic. After I wrote this to the reviewer, they are now purposely making me wait for the review and using up all the time for the deadline, which I have never experienced before at Udacity. This kind of approach is not cool, and their attempt to fool me is making me angry.

I started the Flatiron program back in August of 2022. I was a Mortgage Loan Officer who was looking to pivot my business experience into a more technical role where I could merge my soft skills into a more technical field. I was referred to the Flatiron program by a fellow Loan Officer who was also interested in moving into a more technical role. He convinced me that the program was worth the price tag. ($16,900 is what I paid for the start of my program.) I left my job and started the program and I haven't turned back. I graduated in late November and have accepted a position as a business analyst. As far as turnaround times go on employment, I couldn't be happier. One thing I would like to see more of in this program is an increased focus on SQL and visualization programs like Tableau or Power BI, as those are required for many data analyst roles. I would recommend this program for anyone who is interested in learning Python and its many libraries for data science / data analytics purposes.

TripleTen is an online career accelerator helping people transition into AI-ready tech careers or advance their existing skills in a rapidly changing job market. Their cohort-based, AI-integrated programs combine hands-on projects, flexible learning, and career coaching to prepare students for today's tech roles. Around 80% of TripleTen's students come from non-STEM backgrounds, though the programs are designed for learners ranging from complete beginners to experienced professionals.
Vivian C Verified via LinkedInGraduate • Course: Data Analytics • Online“From operational instinct to official analyst title”
I came into TripleTen's BIA program with over 10 years of real operational and financial problem-solving experience, but I had never held an official analyst title. I knew how to diagnose problems and fix them and present solutions to leadership and stakeholders. What I didn't have was the format tech hiring managers expect to see, things like dashboards, key insight summaries, and structured data storytelling. That's exactly what the program gave me. The bootcamp was my first real exposure to tools like Tableau and Power BI, and to concepts like maintaining a clean summary tab or a changes/bugs log. I had some SQL, programming and advanced Excel background going in, but I didn't lead with those. What actually shifted my trajectory was learning how to package analytical thinking the way the industry expects it packaged. The career support was just as valuable as the technical training. The resume and LinkedIn revamp changed how I presented over a decade of results. I used to list responsibilities. Now every bullet leads with impact, dollars recovered, percentage improvements, systems that outlasted my time in a role. My career coach also added a lot in our review sessions, reading bullets out loud and reacting in real time gave me new ways of seeing my own experience that I hadn't considered on my own. A few months after finishing the program, TripleTen connected me with an externship at an insurtech company. That hands-on experience mattered more than I expected. Seeing how real problems get identified and resolved in a live environment builds a kind of confidence you can't get from coursework alone. Two weeks into that externship, I landed an interview for a Finance Ops Data Analyst role. I didn't get to a mock interview before my first round, I went in without it, and it still went well. The second round included an assessment task that happened to be in the exact format I'd just practiced in the bootcamp (master tables, calculated fields, plain-language summaries that answer "so what"). I knew immediately what to do with it and did it well. I got the job. And I negotiated an offer at the top of the posted salary band. My advice to anyone considering TripleTen is don't wait until you feel fully qualified to start, or fully finished to start applying. I didn't have a project portfolio built when I landed my interviews. Apply while you keep improving in the background. You don't need to be the best candidate in the field, you only need to be better than the other people who interview for that same role. TripleTen won't hand you the experience you don't have, but it will give you the tools and format to finally prove the experience you do have.

As a Business Analyst at the University of Chicago, I initially joined the Data Analytics Bootcamp specifically to master SQL. I was impressed to find the curriculum went far beyond that, covering Python, Tableau, and PowerBI in depth. Over the past few months, I’ve already been able to integrate these new skills directly into my current role, and I feel much more confident pivoting into larger-scale data challenges. A huge part of the success of this program is the instruction; Tina Lowry is incredibly knowledgeable and goes above and beyond, providing additional office hours that were instrumental to my learning. I highly recommend this bootcamp to any data professional—from beginner to intermediate—looking to bridge the gap in their technical toolkit. The class has also helped me discover a passion for data storytelling which I'm excited to explore very soon!

I am so happy with my decision to do my boot camp with the tech academy! I was drawn to the program because it was self-paced, middle of the range in terms of cost and time, and because they built their curriculum for people who have never coded before. I knew hardly anything about coding to begin with and they really drill the fundamentals before ramping up to more challenging content. I gained a broad base of fundamental skills in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript before moving onto the more specific data science which focus more on statistics, machine learning, Python and R. I can now confidently wrangle, visualize and model data using both Python, R and PowerBI. At the end I did a two week live project that really brought all of those skills together in real-world agile/scrum team environment. I do want to note that Data Science is a big, new, someone ill-defined field and I believe there is no way someone could learn every aspect of it in four months. This bootcamp gave me super solid fundamentals in the areas of statistics, data wrangling/cleaning, data visualization, and machine learning models using both Python and R. I now have the confidence to self educate in these and other areas of interest, as well as the skills to land a junior analyst position. The course was challenging without being overwhelming and the staff and instructors are available, competent, and they clearly want you to succeed. My job placement coordinator was AMAZING (shout out to Samantha!) She's the closest thing I've ever had to a personal assistant. Whether you need someone to look over a resume or cover letter or to give you a pep talk, they are there for it, present, and keep you on track without being overbearing. They are also very receptive to feedback about the program or your experience both during and after. Overall it was a very positive experience and I feel like I used my quarantine to really get my life on a better track.

I took the Jedha’s Data Essentials bootcamp remotely (full time). The program provides a solid introduction to data analysis. The pace is intensive, but the hands-on exercises and final project make it possible to apply what you learn to a real-world problem. The instructors were also supportive and available throughout the course. A great program for anyone looking to build practical data skills and a strong foundation for further learning.

Paulius G. Verified via GitHubGraduate • Course: Data Science • Online“Good, fast paced, real world examples”
Slower than I planned — and better for it I enrolled in the Data Science program expecting to finish in about 8 months. It took considerably longer, and that turned out to be the best thing about it. The structure is self-paced, which sounds easy until you realise nobody is going to carry you — the projects genuinely require you to understand what you're building. Every sprint was harder than the last, and each one ended in a live review with a senior team lead who asked real questions. Those reviews were the single most valuable part of the program for me. You can't bluff your way through explaining your own architecture to someone who knows the field, and the feedback I got afterwards consistently pointed at things I hadn't seen myself. The curriculum kept pace with the field, which matters in this area. By the later sprints I was building agentic AI systems with modern tooling rather than working through exercises that had aged out. The other unexpected value was the people — discussions with peers and open sessions with lecturers pushed my thinking further than studying alone would have. Honest expectation-setting for anyone considering it: if you're self-motivated and want to actually understand the material, this is a strong choice. If you want a fast checkbox certificate, look elsewhere. The flexibility is real, but so is the workload, and job-hunting afterwards is its own full-time project. Thanks to the Turing College team, the STLs and JTLs who made it what it was. Recommended.

I attended the data science boot camp of Clarusway. It was an unforgettable experience. I can never forget about it. I miss my days at the boot camp. I miss my friends and instructors. Only a few months after I graduated, I was accepted into my dream job but because of some family issues, I couldn't go abroad to the UK. And only a few months later I was accepted to the dream job I am working now. Thank you guys! You have completely changed my life! I love you all.

I recently completed the Data Science Bootcamp at WBS CODING SCHOOL. Everything appeared exactly when it was needed, and the different parts of the course worked together almost like clockwork. I especially appreciated that the program went beyond programming and data science. It also covered data visualization, presentation design and rhetoric, as well as practical career guidance on CVs, LinkedIn, and the job search. WBS also continues to support graduates through its own Talent Pool. The instructors created a genuinely friendly and human atmosphere, even during an extremely intensive bootcamp. The combination of individual, pair, and group work made the learning collaborative and created natural opportunities for networking. Many participants came with substantial professional backgrounds, so there was a lot to learn not only from the instructors but also from each other. Four months obviously cannot teach you everything in Data Science. What the bootcamp gave me instead was a solid foundation and, perhaps more importantly, a roadmap for where to go next.
