What is AI and Machine Learning?

The umbrella term, Artificial Intelligence (AI), has existed since the 1950’s, but has accelerated rapidly in the last 10 years. Machine Learning (ML) is a subcomponent of AI that uses specific statistical algorithms to process massive amounts of data in order to produce insights, predictions, and unique outputs.

As Evan Shy, the CEO of Coding Temple, describes: “The World Economic Forum predicts that tech advancements, from automation, artificial intelligence, to robotics, will displace 85 million jobs by 2025. However, this same technology will also create 97 million new jobs in areas like data analysis, software development, and cybersecurity. Ultimately it’ll depend on how you prepare for these inevitable changes.”

How to Learn AI and Machine Learning

Machine learning and AI (Artificial Intelligence) bootcamps last 12 to 24 weeks and cost anywhere from free to $30,000. Realistically, a complete beginner in tech is not going to become an AI Engineer in 12 weeks. If you don't have a technical background, then start with a Software Engineering or Data Science bootcamp. Once you graduate, find an entry-level job working with data, and continue to learn! You can also add to your skill set with an entry-level AI Intro course or an advanced course on AI.

What Does a Machine Learning or AI Engineer Do?

Expect a job description for a Machine Learning Engineer or AI Engineer to ask for knowledge of Python and Spark. You may also see generative AI tools like ChatGPT or OpenAI. Codesmith’s Director of Machine Learning, Weylin Wagnon, says, “You need to be able to work with large amounts of data, be a smart programmer, understand neural networks, and have machine learning skills…in general, machine learning is equal parts math, statistics, computer science, and voodoo.”

But what is the difference between machine learning and AI as a career? "AI is the broader field focused on mimicking human intelligence, while machine learning is the method used to train models to recognize patterns and make decisions," says Brian McClain, Noble Desktop's Program Director & Senior Instructor Web Development & Data Science, "As a career, AI often involves applying intelligent systems, whereas ML focuses on building and refining the models behind them."

Varun Kumar, an AI Engineer who graduated from Flatiron School, says his job is “Part data wrangling, part coding, and part researching new techniques and software that has been developed in dealing with large language models and processing natural language.” Varun breaks it down even further into six categories of on-the-job requirements:

  • Research: Stay updated with the latest advancements in the field. This could involve reading research papers, attending seminars or webinars, and participating in online forums and communities. This is crucial as the field of AI and machine learning is evolving rapidly.
  • Data Preparation: Work on preparing and pre-processing the data for training language models. This involves collecting data, cleaning it, and converting it into a format that can be used for machine learning.
  • Model Development and Training: Design and implement machine learning models. This includes choosing the right algorithms, tuning parameters, and training the model on the prepared data. This process often requires running experiments and making iterative improvements based on the results. Many times, I am building on pre-trained models with either fine tuning, or instruction via prompts.
  • Model Evaluation: Evaluate the performance of the models using appropriate metrics. This often involves testing the model on a held-out validation set and analyzing the results.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with other teams, such as product development, to integrate the AI models into products or services. This could involve optimizing the model for deployment, working on the user interface, or addressing user feedback.
  • Documentation and Presentation: Document the work for future reference and present findings to stakeholders or to the technical team. This might involve writing technical reports, creating presentations, or showing working code.

Types of Machine Learning & AI Jobs

Traditional tech roles like Software Engineers and Data Scientists can incorporate AI and Machine Learning skills into their current jobs. However, companies are now hiring for AI-specific roles like Prompt Engineer and AI Integration Specialist. Expect a lot of variability between job listings until these roles become more defined.

Some common ML/AI job titles include:

  • Data Scientist
  • Data Engineer
  • Prompt Engineer
  • AI Engineer
  • Software Engineer
  • Product Manager
  • AI Ethics Officer
  • AI Data Curator
  • AI Trainer
  • AI Integration Specialist

What Kind of Skills Do Machine Learning and AI Engineers Need?

To get started in AI, Machine Learning and AI Engineers need a variety of skills and continuous learning is a must. According to Carianne Burnley, a Career Coach at Springboard, “The most widely used programming language in AI is Python, and the libraries and frameworks associated with it. Knowing other languages like Java and C++ can be helpful as well.”

Hard Skills Required for Machine Learning and AI

The most important AI technical skills and languages are:

  • Python
  • Databases
  • Big data tools like Spark
  • Cloud platforms like AWS or Azure
  • Data visualization tools like Tableau, PowerBI, or R
  • Mathematics like linear algebra, data interpretation, and deep learning.

Even if you learn all of these topics at an AI Bootcamp, expect to continue learning “on the job” where you'll be working with data at scale. Imesh Ekanayake, a mentor at Metana bootcamp, stresses, "I find that where people often lack skills is when attempting to handle tasks at scale, especially in the cloud. Dealing with multi-terabyte or terabyte-scale datasets adds a whole new level of complexity to the equation."

Soft Skills Needed for AI and Machine Learning

Employers are also looking for AI professionals with strong soft skills to help them integrate into the workplace and achieve success. Some soft skills that are important for AI and Machine Learning Engineers are:

  • Critical thinking
  • Problem-solving
  • Communication
  • Time management
  • A desire for continuous learning
  • Flexibility and adaptability

Job Market and Salary Insights

Overall, the job market for artificial intelligence positions is expected to grow at a rate that is faster than average over the next ten years, with Machine Learning and AI positions seeing a 53 percent growth rate during that time, making it #8 on Indeed’s Best Jobs of 2023 list.

The average Machine Learning Engineer salary is $161,407 per year, but salary is largely dependent on experience. The average base salary for an entry-level Machine Learning Engineer is $97,205 per year, $162,774 for a mid-level position, and $185,416 for Engineers with more than ten years of experience. Location matters, too, with  the average salary around $205,000 for a Machine Learning Engineer in cities such as New York, with similar wages for other large metropolitan areas like San Francisco, Austin, and San Diego.

Newly-created AI roles like Prompt Engineer can earn up to $335,000 per year.

“Top-level hands-on, professional and intense program.”

Big Blue Data Academy’s AI Engineering Bootcamp has been an excellent learning experience for me. It has been four intensive months, and the investment of time and effort was unquestionably worthwhile. The professionalism and quality of the programme were evident even before the first classes began, from the interview process to the pre-work materials designed to prepare us for our participation. From the first weeks of hands-on sessions, I was impressed by the expertise of the instructors, the quality of the teaching, and the overall delivery of the bootcamp. One of my main realizations, based on my personal experience, is that a programme like this can offer exceptional value to someone who wants to develop professionally, acquire practical skills quickly, or pursue a career change. Academic postgraduate studies can, of course, provide significant benefits, particularly in terms of theoretical depth and research experience. However, for someone whose main objective is to enter the field quickly, work intensively with modern tools, and gain immediately applicable professional skills, a well-designed bootcamp may be the more suitable path. Looking back, I believe that this type of programme would have been a particularly effective choice for me when I first decided to deepen my knowledge of the field. Big Blue Data Academy has many years of experience in developing its students’ professional skills in areas such as Data Engineering, Data Analytics, and related disciplines. In creating a bootcamp for the emerging field of AI Engineering, the Academy has clearly made strong use of that experience. The programme follows a modular structure in which the different subjects gradually contribute to the development of a broad and practical AI Engineering skill set. This is particularly impressive considering that this was the first cycle of the AI Engineering Bootcamp. I also noted a few areas that could make future cycles even stronger. 1. Greater continuity across the final modules The structure and progression were particularly clear throughout the first major part of the bootcamp. The transition from foundational topics to Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, Large Language Models, and Knowledge Graphs felt logical and well connected. Each module gave a clear sense of what had been learned and how that knowledge would support the next stage of the programme. This created a strong feeling of progression and helped us understand how the individual technologies and concepts fit into a broader AI Engineering workflow. In the later part of the bootcamp, particularly across the modules on APIs, MCP, MLOps, Docker, and Azure, I felt that this sense of continuity became less pronounced. Although the individual modules were delivered successfully and contained valuable material, they sometimes felt like independent courses rather than clearly connected components of the same overall learning journey. Future cycles could potentially strengthen this section by introducing a common end-to-end use case or project that continues across these modules. This could make the relationship between agentic systems, deployment, containerization, cloud infrastructure, monitoring, and production-oriented AI Engineering more explicit. 2. A deeper focus on agentic AI and MCP I would have appreciated a deeper exploration of the agentic side of AI Engineering, with additional time dedicated to concepts such as tool use, orchestration, agent workflows, and the Model Context Protocol. The API module provided an excellent transition into MCP. However, MCP itself did not receive a level of emphasis proportionate to its growing significance within modern AI application development. Additional lectures and practical exercises in this area would help students gain a deeper understanding of how LLM-based systems interact with tools, external services, data sources, and enterprise applications. Given the direction in which the field is developing, I believe that agentic AI could become an even more central part of future bootcamp cycles. 3. A stronger connection between Docker and MLOps The Docker module was very well delivered and provided valuable practical knowledge. At the same time, its content felt closer to a general DevOps introduction than to a module specifically focused on MLOps. A stronger connection to machine-learning production workflows could make the module even more relevant to the programme. For example, Docker could be presented in the context of packaging inference services, reproducing model environments, deploying AI applications, managing dependencies, or integrating models into CI/CD and monitoring workflows. Of course, every bootcamp operates within time and resource constraints, and it is difficult to allocate the ideal amount of time to every subject in such a broad and rapidly evolving field. Overall, the AI Engineering Bootcamp was both a highly valuable professional experience and a meaningful personal journey. It provided me with practical skills, a clearer understanding of the AI Engineering landscape, and the opportunity to work with technologies that are directly relevant to the current market. I am grateful to the instructors and to Big Blue Data Academy for the effort, expertise, and professionalism they brought to the programme. I am confident that future cycles of the AI Engineering Bootcamp will continue to develop and improve, building on an already strong foundation.

I really enjoyed the course material and the fact that everything was remote. Well I haven’t finished the MLOps part yet. The data science part was very interesting. And even though I did another in person data science bootcamp at SPICED before, I still learned quite a few more things. Teachers have been good and friendly. “Good program”

I had a good experience with Skillians Academy overall. What I liked the most is that they focus more on practical session rather than just theory. The trainers actually explain things in a simple way and are approachable if you have doubts. You don’t feel ignored, which is something I’ve seen in many other institutes. The environment is supportive and motivating. They guide you properly about career paths and are honest about what to expect, instead of making fake promises. The team is responsive, and whenever there was an issue, it was addressed without unnecessary delay. One thing I appreciated is that Skillians doesn’t rush learning just to finish the syllabus. They make sure you understand the concepts and are comfortable applying them. If you are serious about learning and willing to put in effort, this academy can genuinely help you grow.
