What is Mobile App Development?

Mobile development is building software to run on mobile devices like tablets, smartphones, and smartwatches. Everything from Instagram to enterprise apps fit in this category. Mobile apps are built for the general public, private companies, and the government. Mobile apps might be native (written in a specific platform’s language) or non-native, written to work on multiple platforms. Android apps are typically written in Java while Apple/iOS apps are written in Swift or Objective-C. These languages are preapproved by the vendor who manufactures the device.

How to Learn Mobile App Development

If you wish to begin a career as a Mobile App Developer, learning to code with a bootcamp is probably the fastest option. Mobile App Development bootcamps can range from 5 weeks to 10 months and vary in price from $5,000-$15,000. The tuition depends on several factors, including location, whether it's immersive or part-time, or online vs in-person. If you’re a self-starter, you may be able to get the education you need by paying for an online, self-paced curriculum, or building your own curriculum to get the training to become a Mobile App Developer. Online resources like Treehouse and Codecademy offer free trials and paid monthly subscriptions. Many mobile app development bootcamps offer deferred tuition, Income Share Agreements (ISA), and financing options.

What Does a Mobile App Developer Do?

The job description for a Mobile App Developer often depends on the employer. The primary duty of a Mobile App Developer is to create, maintain, and implement source code that meets the requirements of the client. They should also understand the different platforms and tools available, and be able to design for any mobile device. The Mobile App Developer should understand the entire development process of an application and how to develop a minimum viable product (MVP). Their duties may include one or all of the steps in the design, development, testing, release, and maintenance life cycle.

Some of the most common Mobile App Developer job titles for bootcampers are:

  • Mobile Application Developer
  • Mobile Application Programmer

What Kind of Skills Do Mobile App Developers Need?

Most Mobile App Developer positions do not require a degree, but will require you to prove your skills with a coding challenge or whiteboarding. Additionally, you should have a portfolio of your apps ready to show potential employers. The skills you need will vary, based on whether you choose to develop for Android or iOS (or both).

Strong communication skills also are a requirement for App Developers because they’ll need to collaborate with other designers, developers, and departments as well as interact with clients.

Job Market and Salary Insights

Mobile app developers are in high demand. The growth rate for developers is projected to be 25 percent over the next decade, which is much faster than average. Globally, the mobile app market is expected to jump from $206.73 billion in 2022 to $407.31 billion by 2025, and the number of downloads is projected to increase by over 40 billion from 2020 to 2024. The job possibilities are nearly endless; after a mobile development bootcamp, you can design native apps for a vendor like Apple or Google, develop apps at a startup, or start your own business.

The average salary for a Mobile App Developer is $128,002. Location is a big factor when it comes to salary, with top markets such as Orlando ($211,747), New York ($155,412), and Atlanta ($147,173) offering the highest rates of pay. Educational requirements vary; while many employers prefer to hire those with college degrees in computer science, that isn’t always the case. However, there are a few certifications that can boost your salary, such as Certified iOS App Developer, Mobile Development Institute Certified Developer (MDICD), Oracle Certified Professional/Java ME Mobile Application Developer, or Xamarin Certified Mobile Developer.

      “Glad I went!”

I really enjoyed my time at Covalence. The videos were very well done, and the labs did a good job of assessing my knowledge of the material. I can’t say enough good things about the instructors. They let me know (literally every day) they were available for any questions I had. They made sure I knew the fundamentals and were positive and encouraging when I was having difficulty with some concept. They were instrumental in helping me set expectations for implementing features in projects, completing projects, and all throughout the job search experience. I felt I was well prepared for searching for jobs, and was hired within a few months.

      “Absolutely worth it”

The biggest thing I got from the bootcamp is that I actually got rid of my impostor syndrome. Being there, following along every lesson, learning a ton, I left with a confidence that I did not have before. At the end of the week, I was able to manually draw a graph in Swift, based on dynamic data and to integrate it in a Objective-C code base. Every detail of the bootcamp is well thought out. The overall experience is absolutely fantastic.

      “Job placement is a lie”

I graduated jan 2024 and I can say with 100% confidence that I was lured in with false promises of job placement assistance right out of graduation. The program itself was less the mediocre, the instructors are all former students and their understanding of the material is cookie cut and strictly based on "how they did their project". Ask them what a binary tree is, ask them what polymorphism is, ask them what abstraction is, ask them what the law of detmeter is, ask them a question about anything relating to the foundations of software engineering that isnt strictly covered in the reading you are provided and you will get dazzled with bs, or deer in the headlights looks.. The first time my eyebrows were raised was when I heard an instructor boast conversationally about "how hard it was learning about the area of a binary tree". I happen to have a degree in software engineering and I happened to know that there was no such thing that existed. I tried to verify if they meant the diameter of a binary tree and they got visibly annoyed that I would question them and doubled down on their claim. To this day I have no idea what the heck the area of a binary tree is, and neither do the software engineers I graduated with.. They were not aware of my education at that time, but I had just began to become fully aware of their ignorance. After supposedly being one of the top performers that has ever gone through that program (Which by the way is subjective as I was told I was given a 99% on an assignment instead of the 100% I deserved because "they wanted me to work harder"), they ignored my request for a letter of recommendation without an explanation, and upon graduation I was told I would be using a job board with outdated job postings and meet with someone for 30 mins once a week to see how my job search was going. There is no job placement assistance, there is nothing that I saw backing their "Codeboxx for life" promise. Its all recruitment talk and its is, in my opinion, all lies. What really got me worked up is that I requested a letter of recommendation about 2 months prior to graduation while I was working my butt off and "doing very well" so that I could try to get a job lined up, and it went fully ignored. Then upon graduation I am immediately contacted and asked if I can be showcased as a success story to promote codeboxx.. Are you kidding? What in thee narcissistic heck is that?? A success story? Really? Your job placement advertising is a lie. You wouldnt even help me on my job search with a LOR after boasting of how well I was doing.. I couldn't believe my ears, the audacity! This place is a scam, you will be expected to go through the material that you will get little to no assistance with, and will basically end up teaching yourself. Upon graduation, all you have to look forward to is a job board with outdated job posting. This is a waste of time, effort, and energy. You could literally learn the same material, with adequate instruction, using udemy. Heck, go to community college and get actual professors to teach you the same stuff, adequately, with an actual certificate to show for it, at a fraction of the price. (Edit: I just saw that they went back and changed the 90.2% job placement on their website to reflect graduates up until July 2023 because those figures are more like 0%-50% after that.)

I was working in a complete different field, but was always interested in coding. Before hearing about Ubiqum, I thought that this was only for engineers/computing experts. When I went to my first interview at Ubiqum they open my eyes and showed me that this is something for everyone that want to become a developer without any previous experience. What makes Ubiqum different is that it is the only bootcamp available in Barcelona for people with no previous experience in this field using the "Learning by doing" method. It is a full time course, from 9 to 17(Monday-Friday) that last 5 months. Overall in this 5 months you will go from 0 knowledge to obtaining the basics all developers need in the frontend and backend area. Even though, you will have dedicated mentors supporting you throughout the entire course, they won't give you all the answers; instead they will guide you so you can look for the answers yourself which is what true developers do and what will be require in any company you join. Without a doubt I will 100% recommend Ubiqum for anyone that wants to learn and join this crazy world of coding.

      “Inspiring, nostalgic, engaging, supportive, unforgettable.”

I recently completed IGA Level 1, and I have to say, it was an amazing experience! From the first day, I felt completely immersed, and by the time it ended, I genuinely didn’t want it to. It made me feel like a kid again, rediscovering the excitement of creating and learning alongside passionate people. One of the highlights was definitely the community. I met some great people, and I truly hope these friendships last beyond the course. There’s a real sense of camaraderie among students, and that makes the whole experience even more rewarding. As for the teachers, they are magnificent, knowledgeable, supportive, and genuinely invested in helping students succeed. They know how to keep things engaging while making sure everyone is on the same page, which is crucial in a beginner-friendly setting. Working in Unity was a great way to put everything into practice. However, when it came to artistic development, I felt that the course could have delved a little deeper into best practices, do’s and don’ts, or overall guidelines for a stronger artistic foundation. That said, I can see how this was likely a deliberate choice to avoid overwhelming beginners. Overall, IGA Level 1 is an excellent starting point for anyone looking to get into game development. The structure is solid, the atmosphere is inspiring, and the people you meet along the way make it all the more worthwhile. If you’re considering it, go for it you won’t regret it!

Codecool is a full-time, 12-month coding course in Hungary, Poland, and Romania with a job guarantee. The developer program is like an apprenticeship, where students will learn Linux, Python, JavaScript, HTML, Java, C# and more. Codecool focuses on the following principles: craftsmanship, growth mindset, teamwork, self-study, interactive events, and a tailored curriculum. Students are guided by mentors who directly support the development of individual students and continuously align the curriculum with the student’s interest.

“A waste of time and money”

I do not recommend this school to anyone. The availability and attention of the mentors is limited and they are consistently overwhelmed by the high number of students. Additionally, issues with bugs and errors were present in a significant portion of the curriculum. The cost of the program is excessive and the promised accreditation from the Ministry of Education has not been delivered. The job guarantees and partnerships with companies advertised by the school are not reliable, and if a student is hired after finishing the school and subsequently fired within a month, the school will not provide any support or assistance in finding a new job. Overall, this school is a waste of money and should be avoided.
