What is a Full Stack Web Developer?

A Full Stack Web Developer is a software engineer who builds both the front end and the back end of a website. The front end is the visible part of the application that users interact with. The back end includes the server, database, and applications that power the application. If you consider “stacks” as the layers of technology, a full stack developer utilizes all the stacks to create a complete application.

A coding bootcamp is the fastest and most streamlined way to learn the full-stack skills. Bootcamp students learn technical skills and soft skills which help more than 79% of graduates land jobs after graduation. To get ready for the bootcamp, it’s important to prepare for the admissions process by taking a prep course, doing some studying on your own, and considering the interview questions you might encounter. There’s also the time and cost commitment to consider, as most bootcamps run anywhere from 8-16 weeks and on average cost $14,214. However, many bootcamps offer deferred tuition, income share agreements (ISA), and other financing options to help you pay for the course.

The demand for Full Stack Web Developers remains high and is widely considered a solid career path. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for software developers is expected to grow by 17%, “much faster than average” by 2024, which is about 200,000 more roles. Full Stack Web Developers are highly sought after by employers because they’re “two-in-one” employees, as they can perform both front and back end development of a website or app, and usually can work independently. The most in-demand Full Stack Web Developers also have a wide range of soft skills such as adaptability, inquisitiveness, the ability to solve problems, attention to detail, and strong communication skills.

What Does a Full Stack Web Developer Do?

In a nutshell, Full Stack Web Developers are generalists, or a “jack of all trades” in the tech world: high-level software engineers who plan, design, analyze, and execute a range of software applications and web services. They create software, applications, and scalable web services. Full Stack Web Developers usually have a wide range of skills and are engaged in every stage of software development, including code review, updates, test-driven development, data structure completion, architecture design, and performance analysis.

On the front end, Full Stack Web Developers handle everything that the website user can see and click on. They create user interfaces (UI) to enhance and perfect the visible parts of an application for both web browsers and mobile devices such as phones and tablets.

Back end work includes everything the user doesn’t see, such as server-side development, Application Programming Interfaces (API) development, database management, performance optimization, and security. They write and maintain the code that makes those processes happen to ensure that everything on the app or website runs smoothly.

What Kind of Skills Do Full Stack Web Developers Need?

Since Full Stack Web Developers handle all aspects of web/app design, implementation, and maintenance, they need a wide range of skills. Full Stack Web Developers need to be able to see what makes both the front and back end work, and how to connect both these sides to create a unified product. They also need to have a deep awareness of all the tools and best practices that meet the needs of their specific project.

Soft Skills + Hard Skills Needed by Full Stack Web Developers

Full Stack Web Developers need a wide range of technical skills in a variety of languages, depending on what a project requires. Full stack developers need strong tech skills to do their job successfully, but since they’re working on all aspects of a project, they need to have a variety of “soft skills” as well.

Successful full stack developers should have the following soft and hard skills:

Soft Skills

Hard Skills

Communication

Programming languages and frameworks, such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python, Ruby, PHP, SQL, and NoSQL.

Team Player

UX/UI design

Problem-solving

System architecture

Time-management

Version control systems

Flexibility and adaptability

Knowledge of cloud services

Critical thinking

Automated Testing and Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD)

Creativity and innovation

Security best practices

Job Market and Salary Insights

The job market for Full Stack Web Developers is bright. With the continued growth of e-commerce, job demand is expected to grow 16% over the next decade, with 19,000 new job openings each year, which is much faster than the average for all other occupations. The pay is substantial as well, with the estimated salary for a Full Stack Web Developer coming in at $121,000 per year (with a median of $89,841).

Despite the proliferation of remote work, your location will be a significant factor in determining your yearly salary, with positions located in tech hubs such as New York, San Francisco, and London generally paying more (of course, the cost of living is much higher there). Larger companies tend to pay more than smaller businesses, and how much you earn is also dependent on your specific skill set.

Here is a list of the most frequent full stack development job titles for bootcampers:

  • Full Stack Engineer
  • Full Stack Web Developer
  • Full Stack Software Engineer
  • Full Stack Architect
  • Front End Developer
  • Back End Developer
  • Mobile Developer
  • Machine Learning Engineer
  • Junior Developer
  • Associate Developer

  • Web Development Instructor
  • Teacher Assistant (TA)

      “Amazing experience and journey”

I recently completed the Austin Community College Software Development Bootcamp and I couldn't be happier with my experience. Piyush was an absolute wealth of knowledge. Every lecture with him was filled with detailed, insightful information and he was always happy to answer questions. Brittany was a fantastic mentor and an expert in JavaScript. She was kind and patient and always there to help whenever I needed it. Jon was an incredible instructor who took the time to make sure I fully understood HTML and CSS. He was extremely knowledgeable and always willing to go the extra mile to help me grasp the material. Finally, I have to give a big shoutout to Jon-Mikel, who was an excellent instructor for our class on JavaScript, NodeJS, ExpressJS, APIs and MongoDB. He was able to break down complex concepts in a way that was easy to understand and always made sure we had the support we needed to succeed. Overall, I highly recommend the Austin Community College Software Development Bootcamp. The instructors are top-notch and the course material is comprehensive and well-organized. I feel confident in my new skills and am excited to apply them in my career. Thank you to the whole team at ACC for a fantastic learning experience!

      “Excellent instructor, excellent course”

I was one of Code Career Academy's first full time students. I had previously been exposed to programming through college. I quickly realized that college was lacking the hands on approach that I wanted. The solution to my problem was Code Career Academy. Their head instructor, Jeff Ammons, is the most knowledge programming teacher I know. The course was properly structured so students had enough time to learn a concept and go hands on. No matter your skill level, Jeff has the ability of adapting to you. Jeff Ammons never lacked an answer to any of my programming questions. He not only answered my questions, he also explained “why”. After completing the course, it was up to me to use all the skills learned at Code Career Academy. No school or person can guarantee you a job, so it is up to each student to set their own path. I chose to pursue freelance web development, as I searched and interviewed for different development companies. Jeff was very helpful with my job searching. After two months of applying and interviewing for jobs, I landed my first .NET software developer position. I can honestly say I made the perfect choice by choosing Code Career Academy.

      “Full-Stack Developer”

This course has provided me with the right tools to transition from a non-tech job to a developer role. I had previously tried to study and practice coding and data science on my own, but after close to a year of trying I felt I was nowhere near my initial expectations. The main benefits I got from this course were: · Affordability & Accountability on the part of the Bootcamp. It was a lot easier to start on this bootcamp than any other available at that moment. And it was very important for me that I wouldn’t pay for something that I would not use eventually – I only pay for the course if I get a job. If I don’t get a job in the next 6 months, then I don’t have to pay. · Curriculum. Since the first cohort, which I was part of, Accelerate has greatly improved their curriculum with an in-house study plan that focuses on Node, which is also more in demand presently. As part of the first batch of graduates, I had access to the new curriculum and hence the rating is based on it. · Continuous Support. After the course has ended I was not left to drift on my own but I was given support on how to improve my portfolio, presentation and also find a job. I tried to apply on my own to dozens of jobs, but I was only considered and interviewed for positions on Accelerate’s referral. Their credibility helps a lot in hiring. · Coding environment. Honestly, it’s so distracting to learn or work at home and also motivationally exhausting to do so. Kudos to those who can organize themselves on their own and do it. For me it was a great advantage to be in a workplace environment and surrounded with other people studying exactly the same thing. This way I knew my struggles were no greater or smaller than others’ and I could communicate in real time with other students and instructors for any issues that I encounter while coding.

      “New identity obtained”

I've been slowly teaching myself to code over the years. Then slowly learning game development online with a Udemy course. This last fall I decided to really commit to being a builder in the coming Metaverse. I wanted to learn how to actually start working on my own ideas. At first I was over my head. The pace of the course was crazy, I was learning so much, I was overwhelmed. But a few weeks in things started to click. By the end of the course I surprised myself with what I was able to create for the final project. I'm no longer a wannabe VR developer, now I am a VR developer. I still have a long ways to go, but as a developer, not a wannabe developer. :) Thank you XR Terra

      “Fantastic experience”

TLDR: This course is a fantastic investment. You will learn what you need to know in order to get hired as a junior dev immediately upon graduation, as long as you are appying yourself. The long verison: I was in the most recent cohort, Jan 2018-April 2018. I had an excellent experience. Trip and Tom are awesome teachers. Trip was our main instructor and he is REALLY fantastic at explaining difficult concepts, and clearly puts a great deal of thought into how he delivers information in order for the students to understand it best. It's pretty incredible how quickly they get you up and running, and in a lasting way - you aren't simply memorizing, you're really, truly learning. By then end of the course, you will have the skills you need to be a junior full stack developer. I had no prior javascript knowledge going into the course, and before the course ended I accepted a job offer as a junior React developer here in Charleston. I'm in my first few weeks of the job now and it's going really well - I feel like I was well prepared, and my employers are surprised at how much I know already. Like any course, or really anything in life, you do need to apply yourself. Trip and Tom will point you toward the right door, maybe even turn the handle a bit for you, but you have to push the door open and walk through it yourself if you want to get the most out of the course (as it should be). They are encouraging of this and they create a really positive learning environment. Trip is especially sensitive to the emotional dynamic of the class, which I really appreicated - he is empathetic to the frustration that comes with learning and does his best to keep everyone positive and in good spirits even through the toughest parts of the course. Scool-life-balance: In the beginning there is not any homework. Any extracurriculars you do are up to you. I probably spent one night a week studying after hours to hammer in some concepts, which I'd recommend doing as a bare minimum. Once you get into the last 3 or 4 weeks of the course, you will be doing a good deal of work after hours to finish your final project. I know some folks had part time jobs outside of class, and if you have to do that you can pull it off - BUT, if you are forutnate enough to not have to work while in the course, I'd really recommend not working and just focusing on your studies. This is all to say: this course ROCKS and is well worth the time and money. If you're trying to change careers, this is a really fantastic way to do it. By the time our cohort graduated, half the class either already had jobs or were pretty far along in the interview process. JRS rules!!!!!!!
