What is a Full Stack Web Developer?

A Full Stack Web Developer is a software engineer who builds both the front end and the back end of a website. The front end is the visible part of the application that users interact with. The back end includes the server, database, and applications that power the application. If you consider “stacks” as the layers of technology, a full stack developer utilizes all the stacks to create a complete application.

A coding bootcamp is the fastest and most streamlined way to learn the full-stack skills. Bootcamp students learn technical skills and soft skills which help more than 79% of graduates land jobs after graduation. To get ready for the bootcamp, it’s important to prepare for the admissions process by taking a prep course, doing some studying on your own, and considering the interview questions you might encounter. There’s also the time and cost commitment to consider, as most bootcamps run anywhere from 8-16 weeks and on average cost $14,214. However, many bootcamps offer deferred tuition, income share agreements (ISA), and other financing options to help you pay for the course.

The demand for Full Stack Web Developers remains high and is widely considered a solid career path. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for software developers is expected to grow by 17%, “much faster than average” by 2024, which is about 200,000 more roles. Full Stack Web Developers are highly sought after by employers because they’re “two-in-one” employees, as they can perform both front and back end development of a website or app, and usually can work independently. The most in-demand Full Stack Web Developers also have a wide range of soft skills such as adaptability, inquisitiveness, the ability to solve problems, attention to detail, and strong communication skills.

What Does a Full Stack Web Developer Do?

In a nutshell, Full Stack Web Developers are generalists, or a “jack of all trades” in the tech world: high-level software engineers who plan, design, analyze, and execute a range of software applications and web services. They create software, applications, and scalable web services. Full Stack Web Developers usually have a wide range of skills and are engaged in every stage of software development, including code review, updates, test-driven development, data structure completion, architecture design, and performance analysis.

On the front end, Full Stack Web Developers handle everything that the website user can see and click on. They create user interfaces (UI) to enhance and perfect the visible parts of an application for both web browsers and mobile devices such as phones and tablets.

Back end work includes everything the user doesn’t see, such as server-side development, Application Programming Interfaces (API) development, database management, performance optimization, and security. They write and maintain the code that makes those processes happen to ensure that everything on the app or website runs smoothly.

What Kind of Skills Do Full Stack Web Developers Need?

Since Full Stack Web Developers handle all aspects of web/app design, implementation, and maintenance, they need a wide range of skills. Full Stack Web Developers need to be able to see what makes both the front and back end work, and how to connect both these sides to create a unified product. They also need to have a deep awareness of all the tools and best practices that meet the needs of their specific project.

Soft Skills + Hard Skills Needed by Full Stack Web Developers

Full Stack Web Developers need a wide range of technical skills in a variety of languages, depending on what a project requires. Full stack developers need strong tech skills to do their job successfully, but since they’re working on all aspects of a project, they need to have a variety of “soft skills” as well.

Successful full stack developers should have the following soft and hard skills:

Soft Skills

Hard Skills

Communication

Programming languages and frameworks, such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python, Ruby, PHP, SQL, and NoSQL.

Team Player

UX/UI design

Problem-solving

System architecture

Time-management

Version control systems

Flexibility and adaptability

Knowledge of cloud services

Critical thinking

Automated Testing and Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD)

Creativity and innovation

Security best practices

Job Market and Salary Insights

The job market for Full Stack Web Developers is bright. With the continued growth of e-commerce, job demand is expected to grow 16% over the next decade, with 19,000 new job openings each year, which is much faster than the average for all other occupations. The pay is substantial as well, with the estimated salary for a Full Stack Web Developer coming in at $121,000 per year (with a median of $89,841).

Despite the proliferation of remote work, your location will be a significant factor in determining your yearly salary, with positions located in tech hubs such as New York, San Francisco, and London generally paying more (of course, the cost of living is much higher there). Larger companies tend to pay more than smaller businesses, and how much you earn is also dependent on your specific skill set.

Here is a list of the most frequent full stack development job titles for bootcampers:

  • Full Stack Engineer
  • Full Stack Web Developer
  • Full Stack Software Engineer
  • Full Stack Architect
  • Front End Developer
  • Back End Developer
  • Mobile Developer
  • Machine Learning Engineer
  • Junior Developer
  • Associate Developer

Excellent session. As i was with No Coding background, following certain bits in the training was difficult. Gurdeep helped me by going slow and repeating those bits multiple times with many examples. i dont know much to write, but i would recommend others to go thru this course if they get enrolled under Gurdeep. I would defintely go onto a class session with Gurdeep on any other course that is offered by him. Regards Shyam TG

“Best option to become a Web Developer and experience a different culture.”

Destination Dev completely delivered what I was expecting from a Coding Bootcamp. I came to the Bootcamp with some experience working on IT and with a CIS Degree from the US, and I can assure you that I was able to learn more about coding and building applications in the past 10 weeks than in my entire 4 years in College. Despite the fact that it is a brand new program, the Director and the Instructors were always asking for our feedback and were willing to do anything in order to improve our experience and making sure that we were understanding the material. The instructors were very helpful and were willing to put extra work in order to prepare me for my new job as a full-time Software Developer in Los Angeles, California. Unforgettable experience, amazing cultural immersion (I played Futbol in Colombia, salsa classes, beautiful places), and some of the most amazing people I've ever met.

I learned coding at Nebula, I was part of the first bootcamp. It was not easy at the beginning but it was amazing to see all you can do with a few lines of codes and that changed everything. I also learned many other skills among them, problem solving which is very important because it will help you in your entire life either you are in technology or not. “Excellent Value and Support”

Qwasar Silicon Valley was founded by a team of dedicated and genuinely thoughtful technologists who believe in the power of learning through experience, not lectures or textbooks. The more you put into this program, the more you will get out of it. Support is available for questions of all types - from fundamentals to more advanced CS topics. There is a diverse student body that is eager to learn and support one another, and peer-based project reviews help students both learn to take constructive criticism and to digest and comment intelligently on someone else's code. The connections with numerous companies (in the Bay Area and across the globe) help students to open doors and find meaningful employment, and as the program progresses there is a good amount of interview prep which is very practical. I strongly recommend this program for students of all abilities who truly wish to further their technical knowledge and build a solid foundation for a career in any part of the tech industry.

      “CodeBound Graduate”

CodeBound doesn't claim to fix your life, and It doesn't guarantee a long, successful career in the field. What it does offer is a chance to learn the skills that are building the modern world. From day one we were told that we would only get out of this course what we were willing to put into it; Something they reiterated at every new technology learned. Still, they offered one-on-one tutoring for those who needed it, and were always active on slack even late at night where I would sometimes be stuck on an exercise that I couldn't finish in class and needed to reach out. In addition to learning the technologies used in the industry, we also learned about the 'best practices' of the Software Engineering world, and mindsets and strategies to help us tackle the challenges placed on us during the class; The most important ones - in my opinion - being "Never be too proud to ask for help", "Taking a break is the easiest way to keep yourself from burning out", "Learn your team's strengths so you know where to go when you need help and their weaknesses so you can help build them up", and - Most importantly - "There's very few wrong ways to solve a problem." Even when COVID-19 hit and on-site operations were halted in the interest of public health, We moved our courses online, extended our timeline (1 extra week to make sure we were adjusted for remote learning), and even adjusted our start times to make sure everyone was in the best position to continue learning. I came out of CodeBound with a job offer I graciously accepted and have been leading my own development team since Day 1. And for some of the other reviews left here; I came into CodeBound not knowing anything more than some basic HTML and CSS and now I'm pioneering functionality on a multi-million dollar project all thanks to the knowledge of my instructors and the first-hand, real world experience obtained as part of CodeBound.

      “Highly recommend Noble's courses”

I have completed 2 certificate programs at Noble Desktop in NYC - a 90-hour front-end web design certificate that included classes in HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript and JQuery, HTML email, Photoshop for web and UI, and mobile and responsive web design. No more Dreamweaver and WYSIWYG, this is all coding! The second certificate built onto the first, and added a 30-hour back-end web development program which included PHP and MySQL and WordPress.org. I learned tons, and the teachers were excellent. The coursebooks are such a valuable tool to use with my projects, and being able to take additional classes live online makes it easy to keep learning. I was able to code a WordPress theme from scratch with what I learned form the WordPress.org class, and was even asked to speak at this past summer's Wordcamp NYC. The instructors know their stuff, and really make learning fun. Nothing is rushed, and they take time to answer all questions. And having the option to re-take a class is also great. These courses were a very worthwhile investment - would recommend to anyone.

“So grateful for the experience and knowledge gained from Perpetual Education”

To be honest, I was skeptical about Perpetual Education in the beginning. After checking out their website it felt much more like a designer or UX/UI leaning course. I really loved their outlook and approach to educating, but it wasn't the path that I wanted. I (thought) I was looking for a backend path or maybe fullstack. I did return to them eventually and after chatting with Ivy and Derek, I was assured that with how they set up the program, there are eventually different routes and different areas to focus on during the course, but they are heavy on teaching about the design DOs and DON'Ts so that more developers are able to create with more purpose and not making broken things. The course is heavily reliant on group participation and communication. When students aren't involved, it can impact everyone, so don't go into this (or any study program) if you can't dedicate yourself to learning and keeping up with everyone. It's not fair to you or anyone else. The participation with fellow students has been some of the best experience and learning from the program. Others would ask questions I hadn't thought of or would run into issues and we could all learn from that as a team. There is an expectation to meet with Derek at least once a week to chat about whatever you need to. If you are struggling with understanding a concept, he can work with you one on one to get a better idea and how to practice so that the information will stick. Do NOT skip out on these meetings. It is single-handedly possibly the best benefit to this course. Now, for job assistance, they aren't going to hand out jobs for everyone to apply to, because that isn't their goal anyway. They want everyone to find their own focus and discover the kind of companies you want to work for. If you really like camping and hiking and outdoorsy stuff, find a cool company that aligns with that and figure out how you can get a job there. Then you will get the assistance you want/need for polishing your resume, your portfolio and generally preparing for interviews and such. In short, I think the experience here is one of a kind and I can't imagine a better outcome from any of the other bootcamps I had looked at in the beginning.
