What is Data Science?

Data science is a multidisciplinary field that combines computer science and statistics. With so much data being produced every day, data science makes it possible to draw useful insights from datasets that may be too large for traditional statistics to analyze. This data is often called "big data,” and can include anything from analyzing complex genomic structures to interpreting handwriting to optimizing a marketing strategy. And data science is not limited to just numbers! Data science finds patterns in all unstructured sets, including text, images, and audio files.

How to Learn Data Science

The best data science course for you depends on your learning style, career goals, availability, etc. Here's our advice for choosing the right data bootcamp and what you can expect:

  1. Examine the curriculum – Does the bootcamp teach the most modern data science tools, programming languages, and skills?
  2. Ask About Projects – At a good data science bootcamp, you'll build at least 2-3 projects using real-world data sets!
  3. Meet the Instructors – Do the bootcamp instructors have qualifications like quantitative degrees, master’s degrees, or even PhDs? This is much more common in the world of data science bootcamps.
  4. Ask About Outcomes – Ask the school for their CIRR report or job outcomes report, read data science bootcamp alumni reviews, and even reach out to alumni on LinkedIn to ask questions.

Data Science bootcamps can cost between $10,000 and $20,000. However, many data science bootcamps offer scholarships and financing options to make tuition affordable. There are also fellowships and free data science bootcamps, such as Insight Data Science.

Types of Data Science Jobs

There are a wide variety of data science jobs, and if there's one thing that we've learned after interviewing so many data science bootcamp graduates, it's that no two companies use the same job titles. Common job responsibilities of data scientists include data engineering, machine learning, natural language processing (NLP), data cleaning, and data analysis.

The median yearly salary for a Data Scientist is $108,020. Here is a list of the most frequent data science job titles for bootcampers:

  • Data Engineer
  • Machine Learning Engineer
  • Data Scientist/Software Engineer
  • Big Data Analytics Consultant
  • Decision Scientist
  • Data/Business Analyst
  • Data Journalist
  • Financial Analyst
  • Product Analyst
  • Database Administrator

What Does a Data Scientist Do?

In general, a Data Scientist analyzes, organizes, and interprets complex digital data. A Data Scientist’s responsibilities will vary, depending on the type and size of company they work for. For example, a Data Scientist at a startup may be responsible for data engineering as well as data cleaning. A Data Scientist at a larger company, such as a consulting firm, may be directly working with clients to build dashboards for their teams or they may be devising models to better predict trends for shareholders.

What Kind of Skills Do Data Scientists Need?

While math and coding skills are an essential part of data science, business intelligence and a scientific approach are key to making sense of data. Most data science students have a previous background in STEM, but overall, data science students and professionals are detail-oriented and excel at problem-solving, logical reasoning, and communication.

Hard Skills for Data Scientists

Here is a quick list of data science skills and technologies used in the field and often taught at data science bootcamps:

Soft Skills Needed by Data Scientists

Data scientists need more than tech skills; they need creativity, foresight, and the ability to communicate their findings to a variety of stakeholders. Other soft skills needed by Data Scientists include:

  • Curiosity
  • Critical thinking
  • Flexibility
  • Problem-solving
  • Emotional intelligence
  • Time management

 Job Market and Salary Insights

The job market outlook for Data Scientists is very positive, with a projected 35% job growth from 2022 to 2032, significantly higher than the average for all occupations. This translates to approximately 17,700 openings for data scientists over the next decade. Data Scientists can expect a $108,020 median salary as of May 2023. Other factors that may affect the salary earned by a Data Scientist include:

  • Location: Those in larger cities or “tech hubs” may earn more.
  • Experience: The more years you have in your career, the more you'll earn. An entry-level data scientist can earn an average of $86,906, while someone at a senior level may earn, on average, $126,631.
  • Education: Data Scientists with advanced degrees are likely to earn higher salaries.

FAQ Section

How do you start a career in data science?

Many Data Scientists start their careers in academia. If you have a bachelor's degree or PhD in a quantitative field, you're already close to a data science career. A data science fellowship like Insight Data Science would be a fantastic option.

Most data science bootcamps require students to have a degree in STEM and an aptitude for math and statistics. Then, you’ll be ready to apply to data science bootcamps, typically intensive 3- to 6-month programs. Data science bootcamps prepare graduates for entry-level and junior data science jobs, such as Data Analyst, Data Scientist, Machine Learning Engineer, and Data Engineer.

Keep in mind that a data science bootcamp is not a traditional coding bootcamp. In addition to learning programming languages, such as Python and R, data science bootcamps teach students how to extract valuable knowledge from large datasets using analytical and programming skills.

Is data science a good career?

According to US News and World Report, data science ranks number four on the list of the best tech jobs, largely due to the higher salaries and low unemployment rates. It also offers opportunities for career growth, work-life balance, and a low-to-moderate stress level.

Why is data science a growing field?

With everyone from businesses to non-profits to the government collecting data, there is a high demand for turning that data into smart business decisions. With the increase in AI and machine learning, companies will need people who can collect, analyze and interpret data, and turn it into profitable solutions.

      “16 Week Remote DSDojo Bootcamp”

16 weeks may seem like a daunting time commitment, but the course is so worth it! The way the Data Science Dojo crew runs their bootcamp program is very thorough. The lessons and homework flow very intuitively. The modules covered build on concepts in a way that really helps with understanding. The instructors really promote class interaction which is good for tackling these topics in such a short time, getting our engagement rather than simply lecturing at us. They also encourage participation in a class Kaggle competition, which helps with additional free-form practical application of the concepts covered in class (plus some friendly competition for motivation). Most importantly, the instructors are very interactive, hands on, and passionate. They want to see every cohort succeed in their learning and you can see the labor of love that goes into teaching us, providing quality content both in the sessions and via the course site. This really sets them apart from other bootcamps, especially those provided online. The course covers all the hot topics in the Data Science field, grounding in the perspective that the bootcamp is looking to prepare students with a broad range of experiences. I appreciate the context they provide and the thought that went into exposing us to a little bit of everything and the skills to jump in.

      “I doubled my income!!!”

I used Dataquest since 2019 and I double my income in 4 years and became a Data Scientist. That’s pretty cool! I’m sure other platforms could have also done the same thing but this is my experience. I don’t have any negative things to said and I’m pretty hard to satisfy so they are definitely doing the right things. I still have access to their platform since I purchased a lifetime membership years ago. I’ve finished the Data Science career pathway and now I’m running out of courses to take within DQ. I do wish they invest more in AI courses, e.g., large language models, deep learning, AI agent development, etc. Hopefully, someone will see this post and start creating more advanced course in AI. Long story short, great platform you won’t regret it!

      “Highly recommended Data Science Bootcamp”

I have attend the Sept-Dec 2019 session of Vivadata bootcamp. Vivadata bootcamp is a 10 week program covering python programming, data collection, data analysis, machine learning (supervized and unsupervized), NLP, data engineering and deep learning. I have found the content of the classes to be of high quality: written courses, video courses, exercises and corrections are accessible on their platform and remain accessible after the bootcamp. The courses are dense, oriented towards practice (lots of exercises and projects) and the pace was strong from the beginning to the end (be motivated!). The teachers and teachers assistants are knowledgeable and very available to support students whenever questions are coming up. I enjoyed the teaching style, the playful content and engaging projects that contributes to make the challenging experience fun as well. The cohort is kept to a maximum of 15 fellows (not always the case in other bootcamps). I appreciated that Vivadata accepted fellows from diverse backgrounds and levels of education (I’ve seen other bootcamp only accessible to fellow holding a master or PhD which is in my opinion meant to inflate their employment rate after the bootcamp) as long they show they are serious and motivated by completing the preparatory work. While all the resources are available for free online, I am glad that I joined a bootcamp because I don’t think I would have been able to learn so much by myself in such a short amount of time. Having the support of classmates and teachers to solve issues allowed me to avoid great frustrations met when you start coding and being part of a cohort was very motivating. I am extremely satisfied with the Vivadata’s bootcamp and I would recommend this bootcamp to someone motivated (because it requires a strong commitment) who wants to learn a lot about python and data science in a short amount of time and has for short term plan to add data skills to his/her current job/domain or long term plan (because it will require more practice and studying) to become a data scientist

“Rebuilt my Bubble app from the scratch in Java”

During the pandemic I started learning some MATLAB so I could try building my own tools. It became a minor obsession. I was listening to podcasts about it, taking classes, watching videos, and staying up way too late. Last November I subbed for a guy at a theater who was leaving to take a coding bootcamp. I was like, wait, a what camp? You mean I can learn how to do this coding thing for real? Last week I launched my app, built from the ground up in Java and Spring, with the things I learned from Coding Nomads. Feels great! Coding Nomads has been great. I liked it so much that I started their Javascript course recently. Here's what the founder said about my capstone project: "Your capstone is among the best we've ever seen here at CodingNomads and we've worked with hundreds of students. So, job well done!" My intention is not to leave pro audio, but I do see software development as my next career act. Ideally, I'd like to keep building Tracebook and SubAligner, while doing freelance development work for manufacturers, AV companies, and the live event industry. I want to say a huge thank you to my wife, Elis, who is/was patient with my new obsession and all of the friends who I haven't reached out to a while. Thanks for your support! ❤️

      “Life Changer”

I don’t think I could overstate the value of my time at NSS. I was a paralegal for 10 years and had no coding background or exposure to the tech world. I left the program feeling confident in my coding skills and having already accepted an offer with a starting salary nearly 60% higher than my previous job. I think NSS’s real competitive edge is 1) their wide network of employers who regularly hire from their programs and 2) the fact that they are a nonprofit. They really want you to succeed and get a great job, and they will do everything in their power to help you do it. Also, they want to do it as cheaply as possible, which is not the case with any other bootcamps I’ve seen. Great instructional teams, great career training, and great networking opportunities. This is a career launching program. Best decision of my life.

“Broad Skills, Supportive, and Intensive Learning”

I recently completed the 12-week Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Bootcamp with the Institute of Data. At the start of the program, I was quite apprehensive and stressed about diving into such an intensive course. However, student services and my trainers, Chaitanya & Isabelle were incredibly supportive, providing positive reassurance that helped elevate my concerns. Their encouragement made a significant difference in my confidence and ability to tackle the coursework. The curriculum is robust, covering essential foundations in Python, machine learning, and other key areas, such as soft skills (critical thinking, presenting, documentation). It's a comprehensive overview that serves as a jack of all trades, master of none. This broad approach is perfect for those looking to gain a wide range of skills in a short period. Be prepared, though—the course moves at a rapid pace. It’s definitely a case of what you put in is what you get out. I would recommend completing the pre-course work in plenty of time to alleviate stress. This preparation will help you start the boot camp on the right foot and keep up with the fast-paced learning environment. Additionally, a laptop with at least 8GB of RAM or higher is essential for the course. For the final capstone project, I highly recommend sourcing a data set as early as possible to give yourself ample time to work on it. By the end of the course, I was very pleased with what I had achieved and how far I had come. The progress I made in just 12 weeks was beyond my expectations. While I am still in the process of securing a full-time data role, I can't comment extensively on job prospects after the course. However, I can say that the job outcomes team is very friendly and provide a wealth of resources. “Data Science”

I was doing my masters' degree in Space engineering and I was unhappy as I didn't find anything that kept me interested and devoted. I had tried a few things in data science and tried to self-learn but I realized quickly that the initial learning curve in this was really steep. I have heard people use the phrase for data science - "It's easy, It's not Rocket science", but having studied rocket science as well, i found out that data science was not easy. Browsing through hundreds of online courses and trying to learn from thousands of resources I was overwhelmed by the ever-changing and ever upgrading field of Data Science. I needed some structure and a beginners level course which was a challenge to find. I came across the data science course offered by Ubiqum and decided to enroll in it. Their “learn by doing”methodology really focused on the practical aspects of data science which helped in greatly reducing the steep initial learning curve. Having said about the practical aspects, theoretical aspects are not forgotten either and the mentors discuss all the theory before, during and after every task. The projects are designed in such a way that the difficulty levels up with every subsequent project and this helped me build up a very strong base. I now have completed many projects at Ubiqum and ventured deep into the domain of data science and I would like to thank Ubiqum to provide me with the catapult which helped me launch myself into a career in data science.
