What is a Full Stack Web Developer?

A Full Stack Web Developer is a software engineer who builds both the front end and the back end of a website. The front end is the visible part of the application that users interact with. The back end includes the server, database, and applications that power the application. If you consider “stacks” as the layers of technology, a full stack developer utilizes all the stacks to create a complete application.

A coding bootcamp is the fastest and most streamlined way to learn the full-stack skills. Bootcamp students learn technical skills and soft skills which help more than 79% of graduates land jobs after graduation. To get ready for the bootcamp, it’s important to prepare for the admissions process by taking a prep course, doing some studying on your own, and considering the interview questions you might encounter. There’s also the time and cost commitment to consider, as most bootcamps run anywhere from 8-16 weeks and on average cost $14,214. However, many bootcamps offer deferred tuition, income share agreements (ISA), and other financing options to help you pay for the course.

The demand for Full Stack Web Developers remains high and is widely considered a solid career path. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for software developers is expected to grow by 17%, “much faster than average” by 2024, which is about 200,000 more roles. Full Stack Web Developers are highly sought after by employers because they’re “two-in-one” employees, as they can perform both front and back end development of a website or app, and usually can work independently. The most in-demand Full Stack Web Developers also have a wide range of soft skills such as adaptability, inquisitiveness, the ability to solve problems, attention to detail, and strong communication skills.

What Does a Full Stack Web Developer Do?

In a nutshell, Full Stack Web Developers are generalists, or a “jack of all trades” in the tech world: high-level software engineers who plan, design, analyze, and execute a range of software applications and web services. They create software, applications, and scalable web services. Full Stack Web Developers usually have a wide range of skills and are engaged in every stage of software development, including code review, updates, test-driven development, data structure completion, architecture design, and performance analysis.

On the front end, Full Stack Web Developers handle everything that the website user can see and click on. They create user interfaces (UI) to enhance and perfect the visible parts of an application for both web browsers and mobile devices such as phones and tablets.

Back end work includes everything the user doesn’t see, such as server-side development, Application Programming Interfaces (API) development, database management, performance optimization, and security. They write and maintain the code that makes those processes happen to ensure that everything on the app or website runs smoothly.

What Kind of Skills Do Full Stack Web Developers Need?

Since Full Stack Web Developers handle all aspects of web/app design, implementation, and maintenance, they need a wide range of skills. Full Stack Web Developers need to be able to see what makes both the front and back end work, and how to connect both these sides to create a unified product. They also need to have a deep awareness of all the tools and best practices that meet the needs of their specific project.

Soft Skills + Hard Skills Needed by Full Stack Web Developers

Full Stack Web Developers need a wide range of technical skills in a variety of languages, depending on what a project requires. Full stack developers need strong tech skills to do their job successfully, but since they’re working on all aspects of a project, they need to have a variety of “soft skills” as well.

Successful full stack developers should have the following soft and hard skills:

Soft Skills

Hard Skills

Communication

Programming languages and frameworks, such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python, Ruby, PHP, SQL, and NoSQL.

Team Player

UX/UI design

Problem-solving

System architecture

Time-management

Version control systems

Flexibility and adaptability

Knowledge of cloud services

Critical thinking

Automated Testing and Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD)

Creativity and innovation

Security best practices

Job Market and Salary Insights

The job market for Full Stack Web Developers is bright. With the continued growth of e-commerce, job demand is expected to grow 16% over the next decade, with 19,000 new job openings each year, which is much faster than the average for all other occupations. The pay is substantial as well, with the estimated salary for a Full Stack Web Developer coming in at $121,000 per year (with a median of $89,841).

Despite the proliferation of remote work, your location will be a significant factor in determining your yearly salary, with positions located in tech hubs such as New York, San Francisco, and London generally paying more (of course, the cost of living is much higher there). Larger companies tend to pay more than smaller businesses, and how much you earn is also dependent on your specific skill set.

Here is a list of the most frequent full stack development job titles for bootcampers:

  • Full Stack Engineer
  • Full Stack Web Developer
  • Full Stack Software Engineer
  • Full Stack Architect
  • Front End Developer
  • Back End Developer
  • Mobile Developer
  • Machine Learning Engineer
  • Junior Developer

      “No Lesson Plan”

This course was horrible. The instructor had no lesson plan, he mostly did things off the cuff and did not know a lot of basic terms. The program manager will NEVER get back to you if you have any questions or need help from her. They tell you they help you find a job but once the course is over you never hear from them again. It took months for them to send everyone their certificate of completion when they told us it would take a week after class was over. I have had over 40 rejected job offers now with no end in sight. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS COURSE. Take a different Bootcamp I promise you will be better off.

      “Great School!”

I have taken two classes at Interface Web School so far - Foundations and Java. I am starting my third class with them, WordPress, on August 7. I have really enjoyed my time at Interface. The instructors, Nick and Kent, were great. I learned a lot from them. Nick ran the Foundations course, which teaches HTML, CSS, and jQuery, with a bit of Bootstrap (although Nick doesn't like that - he prefers coding in pure CSS). We did several projects, including one where we animate flipping a card over. I know it doesn't sound like much, but I have since used it in sites I am working on to create a spinning effect. We did not have one big project in that class, just some weekly projects. In Java, however, we did have one big class project. We made an online UNO game (the card game, that is). It works great! We finished the main work on it during class, but we still have some things we want to add, so we all agreed to meet on Sundays after the class was finished to add those things. One thing that the Java class had that online courses do not have is the back end. When you're making Java applications for a server, you have to add extra code such as POJOs to the package in order for it to work. We also had to learn a bit of SQL to get our data working for the game. I highly recommend Interface! Disclosure: I did not have to pay out of pocket for Interface. A state grant has paid for my classes. I don't think paying for it would change my opinion though.

      “Current Student”

When I signed up for Inventive Academy about two months ago there were no reviews on Course Report because the bootcamp had only just been registered (under its new name: Inventive Academy rather than Inventive University) with the Texas Workforce Commission. I am currently part of the first cohort of 2019 and we just finished week 8, which is the first week of JavaScript. I wanted to write a review specifically for anyone who is in the position I was in before I signed up--thinking that the bootcamp looked incredible on paper but a bit confused by the lack of reviews. I can assure you that the bootcamp is as incredible as it appears-- currently 5 hours in-class, 4 days a week, 26 weeks and really they are very generous about helping you during non-class hours, either answering questions promptly online or even allowing you to stop by their offices to hang out. Inventive is also a consulting company, so during the day they are there working as professional developers. This means that there is no risk of getting an inexperienced instructor for the course... Andy and Miguel know their stuff and are both very kind. I suppose it's hard to know if you are fully satisfied with your bootcamp until you land your first job, but so far Inventive Academy has me feeling very confident and vindicated in my decision to attend. To put it in perspective, by the end of the first week you can reproduce the layout of an actual (albeit simple) website using HTML and CSS and by the end of week seven you feel pretty confident that you could replicate just about any web layout that you come across. And there are still nineteen weeks to go at that point! Sometimes they can throw you pretty abruptly into some pretty complex problems, so you do have to learn how to teach yourself (being able to teach yourself is a necessary skill in the field of coding with its rapidly-changing technologies). But the teachers and TA's are always sitting right there next to you ready to answer any question. Classes are a lot of fun, and it's probably not a bad thing that they are sometimes very challenging. I recommend Inventive Academy without reservation.

      “Macro was a great experience!”

With the help of the Macro Fellowship, I was able to transition from being a senior engineer at a large Web2 company to working at a blockchain defi startup. I was already learning Solidity and Ethereum before the fellowship, but now I can write and audit secure smart contracts. I really enjoyed learning a lot about security in web3 and learning in depth how Solidity contracts end up as EVM byte code. The fellowship also allowed me to meet great people in web3 / learning about web3. I really appreciated how most of the Solidity code I wrote was audited—provided me with great feedback.
