What is a Front End Developer?

The front end is the visible part of the application that users interact with, so a Front End Developer designs and maintains what users see in the browser. The front end is often referred to as the “client side” while the back end (which focuses on the server, database, and applications that power the front end) is referred to as the “server side.” A Front End Web Developer will work with languages like CSS and JavaScript as well as some frameworks. A Back End Web Developer works almost exclusively with databases, logic, and server side languages like PHP.

How to Learn Front End Development

Coding bootcamps are the quickest way to become a Front End Web Developer. Most bootcamps teach full stack development and graduates can choose a specialty like front end development. Coding bootcamps typically teach both technical skills and job hunting skills which help more than 80% of graduates secure jobs after bootcamp. Bootcamps can run anywhere from 8-16 weeks and on average cost $15,000 USD, although many bootcamps now offer a variety of financing options.

Types of Front End Development Jobs

Front End Developers can look forward to a wide variety of jobs since no two companies have the exact same expectations of a programmer who specializes in front end technologies. A remote Front End Web Developer job is also a distinct possibility. Here is a list of the most frequent Front End Development jobs for bootcampers:

  • Junior Front End Developer
  • Full Stack Developer
  • Full Stack Web Developer

What Does a Front End Developer Do?

A Front End Developer manages what users see in their browser. They design, analyze code, and debug the client side of an application. This makes them responsible for the look, feel, and design of a website or web application. A Front End Developer is also expected to have some knowledge of the back end as well as frameworks they could be working with.

What Kind of Skills Do Front End Developers Need?

Knowledge of front end languages, frameworks, and critical thinking are essential parts of the developer’s toolbox. Because Front End Developers often work on a team, recruiters are also looking for strong evidence of soft skills. Thankfully, most coding bootcamps teach their students how to demonstrate their transferable skills as well as their technical skills.

Soft Skills Needed by Front End Developers

Soft skills that employers look for include the ability to communicate clearly and ask the right questions. Employers also look for developers who are good at problem-solving and working with a team. Other beneficial soft skills include:

  • Time management
  • Creativity
  • Organization
  • Attention to detail

      “High lintensity training”

Very good programming school allowing you to become a top 1% engineer and land a high paying job in very good companies. Also teach you incredible useful top skills that you won't learn anywhere else as the school system and curriculum is very unique You will need to be able to work 60+ hours a week and connect with your fellow student if you want to succeed here. The school lacks a bit of framing, you can rely only on your work ethic and the black hole pressure (ejection system for the student that can't keep up with the pace)

      “Super practical diploma programs”

When I was a student, we were participating many projects right after finishing any web and mobile development topics. Especially, my teacher, Ali(he is still teaching with the same passion like his first day) has two master degree from one of the high-end universities in Canada. He was just amazing because of small class size, he would spend his time for every student in order for us to understand the logic behind and every single details. I could personally write so much good things about the program, long story short, it is just a brilliant program that everyone should have a chance to be part of this great atmosphere. Highly recommended.

      “Great School!”

I have taken two classes at Interface Web School so far - Foundations and Java. I am starting my third class with them, WordPress, on August 7. I have really enjoyed my time at Interface. The instructors, Nick and Kent, were great. I learned a lot from them. Nick ran the Foundations course, which teaches HTML, CSS, and jQuery, with a bit of Bootstrap (although Nick doesn't like that - he prefers coding in pure CSS). We did several projects, including one where we animate flipping a card over. I know it doesn't sound like much, but I have since used it in sites I am working on to create a spinning effect. We did not have one big project in that class, just some weekly projects. In Java, however, we did have one big class project. We made an online UNO game (the card game, that is). It works great! We finished the main work on it during class, but we still have some things we want to add, so we all agreed to meet on Sundays after the class was finished to add those things. One thing that the Java class had that online courses do not have is the back end. When you're making Java applications for a server, you have to add extra code such as POJOs to the package in order for it to work. We also had to learn a bit of SQL to get our data working for the game. I highly recommend Interface! Disclosure: I did not have to pay out of pocket for Interface. A state grant has paid for my classes. I don't think paying for it would change my opinion though.
