What is UX Design?

UX (User Experience) Design is the process of designing highly functional products, websites, mobile applications, and software with the user in mind. The focus of good UX design is to ensure the user experience is intuitive, easy, and relevant. A UX Designer’s “main goal is to continually measure and improve the usability of a product for its users by leveraging research,” explains Terry Million, Design Product Manager at Chegg Skills.

The demand for UX Designers has never been greater as users and search engines expect a large number of high-quality applications across all devices, such as laptops, tablets, and mobile phones. Despite the growing need, UX Design is reported to be one of the most difficult roles to fill in the tech world. SaaS UX Designers are particularly in demand right now, which means higher salaries for UX Designers. As of May 2023, the average salary for a UX Designer was $98,540.

How to Learn UX Design

A UX bootcamp is most likely the fastest, most secure way to get a UX Designer job. Whether you want to take a user experience course online or attend an immersive UX/UI bootcamp, there’s a bootcamp for you, no matter your needs or experience level. Some bootcamps like Designlab and UX Design Institute strictly teach only user interface and user experience while others like CareerFoundry, Flatiron School, and General Assembly teach a wide variety of courses from Full Stack Development to UX Immersives.UX bootcamps range in duration from 9-28 weeks and cost anywhere from $3,000-$13,000.

What Does a UX Designer Do?

UX Design encompasses every part of the process that involves how the user will interact with a product. UX Designers perform user research, card sorting, wireframing, and usability tests, as well as presenting design concepts, meeting with clients, and finding solutions. "UX Designers shape the quality of the users' relationship with a product or service while balancing stakeholder feedback and business objectives," shares Christophe Drayton, UX Instructor at Noble Desktop, "To do so, they invite users in the design process, via qualitative and quantitative research, prototypes, and usability testing to ensure intuitive, accessible, and enjoyable experiences. In other words, UX Designers center their focus on users' needs and goals to design with them, not for them."

Some UX Designers specialize in only one portion of the process, while others might handle both UX and UI (which focuses solely on how an interface looks and “feels”). The UX Designer uses design thinking and is expected to understand the lifecycle of an application and how to develop and test prototypes.

What Kind of Skills Does a UX Designer Need?

UX Design skills overlap with many positions in the tech industry. You’ll find shared or similar responsibilities with UI Designers and Product Managers. UX recruiters want to see prototypes, wireframes, and how you think. They want to be able to assume from your portfolio that you know the technologies necessary to do your job. They’ll also want to see that you have the soft skills to be empathetic with a user, collaborate with your team, and run user testing sessions.

Hard Skills vs Soft Skills for UX Designers

Soft skills are highly-valued and actively sought out when hiring a UX Designer. They want someone who can communicate effectively, work well on a team, and has a commitment to continuous learning. Here are the top soft skills & hard skills that recruiters want to see:

Job Market and Salary Insights

If you need a push to advance as a designer and are seeking a personalized and effective experience, I highly recommend Path Unbound! As a fashion designer transitioning her career to UI/UX design, this course was exactly what I needed to help complete the process. I was provided with an easy to follow curriculum, one-on-one sessions with an incredible mentor and industry expert, and even, offered interview and career advice. “Highly recommend Noble's courses”

I have completed 2 certificate programs at Noble Desktop in NYC - a 90-hour front-end web design certificate that included classes in HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript and JQuery, HTML email, Photoshop for web and UI, and mobile and responsive web design. No more Dreamweaver and WYSIWYG, this is all coding! The second certificate built onto the first, and added a 30-hour back-end web development program which included PHP and MySQL and WordPress.org. I learned tons, and the teachers were excellent. The coursebooks are such a valuable tool to use with my projects, and being able to take additional classes live online makes it easy to keep learning. I was able to code a WordPress theme from scratch with what I learned form the WordPress.org class, and was even asked to speak at this past summer's Wordcamp NYC. The instructors know their stuff, and really make learning fun. Nothing is rushed, and they take time to answer all questions. And having the option to re-take a class is also great. These courses were a very worthwhile investment - would recommend to anyone.

        “Thank you, Beginex!”

So.... my story is that I was a graphic design student back in the day, and landed a print design job. After a few years, we ALL know what happened with print design (rip) so I was forced to reconsider my career. I went ahead and looked around at what I could do and how I could pivot. Turns out, there was no such school at that time to teach me how to bridge the gap of knowledge I had and what I wanted to learn to further my career at the time, so I bartended. For a LONG time. All the way through the pandemic actually! I learned a TON about people and had fun, BUT it wasn't ideal. Then I read about Beginex. I wasn't sure about it, so I spoke with the director. He was super informative on the process, and how it worked, and was very clear about the education model he used (which is genius and more schools should follow this imho) Here's the deal. Essentially, I got real life experience in UX with a REAL company, on a REAL job with the help of mentors who are established in the field. What a great idea! So I of course signed up. (Also I heard that when people go to other bootcamps, the portfolios are very 'student work' looking, and usually have similar fake projects that hiring managers tend to pick up on.) I am now (within 2 years mind you) a Senior UX.UI designer, at a very large company, and am making really good $$. It was hard work on my part to get where I'm at, but Beginex DEFINITELY made it possible. I am 1000% thrilled that I made the choice to go through Beginex, and I am forever grateful as it honestly transformed my life, my mentality, and my confidence. HUGELY recommend! Thanks Beginex!

“So grateful for the experience and knowledge gained from Perpetual Education”

To be honest, I was skeptical about Perpetual Education in the beginning. After checking out their website it felt much more like a designer or UX/UI leaning course. I really loved their outlook and approach to educating, but it wasn't the path that I wanted. I (thought) I was looking for a backend path or maybe fullstack. I did return to them eventually and after chatting with Ivy and Derek, I was assured that with how they set up the program, there are eventually different routes and different areas to focus on during the course, but they are heavy on teaching about the design DOs and DON'Ts so that more developers are able to create with more purpose and not making broken things. The course is heavily reliant on group participation and communication. When students aren't involved, it can impact everyone, so don't go into this (or any study program) if you can't dedicate yourself to learning and keeping up with everyone. It's not fair to you or anyone else. The participation with fellow students has been some of the best experience and learning from the program. Others would ask questions I hadn't thought of or would run into issues and we could all learn from that as a team. There is an expectation to meet with Derek at least once a week to chat about whatever you need to. If you are struggling with understanding a concept, he can work with you one on one to get a better idea and how to practice so that the information will stick. Do NOT skip out on these meetings. It is single-handedly possibly the best benefit to this course. Now, for job assistance, they aren't going to hand out jobs for everyone to apply to, because that isn't their goal anyway. They want everyone to find their own focus and discover the kind of companies you want to work for. If you really like camping and hiking and outdoorsy stuff, find a cool company that aligns with that and figure out how you can get a job there. Then you will get the assistance you want/need for polishing your resume, your portfolio and generally preparing for interviews and such. In short, I think the experience here is one of a kind and I can't imagine a better outcome from any of the other bootcamps I had looked at in the beginning.
