Le Wagon

I could not express how disappointed I am at the very end of this boot camp. Before I paid for this boot camp, I was fascinated by the tons of good comments from different platforms, but after the start of the batch, I was shocked by its way of instruction. Previously I thought the courses were given live online. Still, all the courses regarding different topics are pre-recorded and you have to go through all the materials alone and finish the challenges after the lecture. This way of learning is very unfriendly to beginners and highly depressing and frustrating. Although they claim to have TAs to answer your questions, they are only available for a set period of time, and you have to wait for a long time to get some confusing answers which you could figure out the solutions to by googling (Now thanks to ChatGPT, you could get the answer for free immediately from OpenAI). As for their challenges, some functions and expressions used to solve them are not mentioned at all in the recordings, which means you need to spend extra time searching for the hints. My suggestion for those who consider registering for this program is to learn from those fantastic free resources on the YouTube channel. Those professors and coders from top world universities and tech giants explain the terms and algorithms much better and clearer than those half-amateurs and TAs who are only good at pushing you to finish the challenges. During this boot camp, I got extremely frustrated. Finally, I gave up learning by copying and pasting the code from the answers to deal with urges from those TAs who really don’t care about whether you have really understood and learned something at all. Ironically, right now, I learn happily and gradually, finding my confidence back from the Data Camp from which the cheat sheets given to students by their instructors come, and their cost is only 1/600 of this terrible boot camp. This awful boot camp definitely doesn’t worth that high price. With the help of ChatGPT and Google, I definitely believe there remain many much better choices than this one. Don’t spend your precious time and money on this program to torture yourself. Read less

Making the insane decision to quit my job and learn to code could have been a huge mistake, but luckily I chose to attend Le Wagon and that has turned what could have been a terrible life choice into an inspired career change. After nine weeks of intensive coding amongst some of the friendliest, smartest, most interesting people imaginable I had evolved into a capable coder with a scattering of statistical knowledge and a plethora of new tools in my coding toolbox. I'm thrilled to share that I recently completed the Le Wagon web development bootcamp from Apr 2022 to Jun 2022, and it was an amazing experience. During the 9-week program, I learned HTML, CSS, Bootstrap, JavaScript ES6, SQL, git, GitHub, Heroku, and Ruby on Rails. The course was intensive and fast-paced, but thanks to the guidance and support of my patient and knowledgeable teachers, Suan Sen, Ashley, and Rayan, I was able to learn a lot in a short amount of time.


The highlight of the program was the end-of-course project I worked on with my classmates/team. We created an iOS and Android app that helps people with special needs find routes that are easier to navigate and also accessible. Users can review places that are inclusive and disability-friendly, such as restaurants, and even upload pictures of the places they visit. Our app also features a community page where users can share events and interact with one another. It was an incredible experience to build something that could potentially help people in their daily lives.


Overall, I highly recommend the Le Wagon web development bootcamp to anyone interested in coding and web development. The teachers were knowledgeable and passionate, and the hands-on approach to learning made the experience more engaging and rewarding. Read less

Highlights

• In person bootcamp. I don’t see how I would have been able to progress and stay on it working from home
• Culture. The teachers and students of my batch were great and the learning atmosphere was fantastic. The whole team behind Le Wagon is brilliant and making the 9 tough weeks a great experience. There is always someone to speak to if you struggle with the process or have questions about career paths after Le Wagon. They offer fun activities for all students (pilates on Tuesday, outings, networking events) and work very hard on making the students experience a good one.
• I’m above the average age of students and was one of the older ones in my batch. There was no point during the 9 weeks that I felt I didn’t fit in and I would recommend this bootcamp to any age group interested in learning how to code.
• Structure of learning. The way the curriculum is set up is brilliant and clear. There is a lot of focus on Ruby and I personally would have liked to see more Python being incorporated to match the skills needed to find a job after the bootcamp. At the end of the bootcamp students work on a 2 weeks project and it is impressive to see what you can do after 9 weeks at Le Wagon. 
• Alumni network. The tens (hundreds??) of thousands students that graduated from Le Wagon all over the world have the opportunity to keep in touch via slack – there is a forum on which you can ask coding questions when you are stuck – a careers forum  - women in tech forum etc. I found this platform extremely helpful during my job search and to speak with likeminded people.

  Lowlights:

• 93% employment rate / 3 months to find a job. I assume this statistic may need to be adjusted for 2023. From my batch of nearly 40 I know that the vast majority did not manage to get a junior/graduate/early career developer role within 3 months. Some people got part time employment and became teaching assistants at the school after graduating or did part time jobs to pay the bill but from what I can see nearly all graduates are still looking for a developer job 3 months after graduating. The job search is tougher than I had anticipated as junior developers often are required to have 2+ years developer experience and graduate roles are very competitive (hundreds of candidates for 1 spot). It seems that product management roles or support engineer roles (careers that don’t only code) are easier to get.
• Batchsize. We were nearly 40 students on the batch – imaging working on complex challenges with 40 people in the back. I mostly worked with my noise cancelling headphones on as I wouldn’t have been able to concentrate otherwise.
• Skill levels. It seems that students are selected by keeping quantity rather than quality in mind. I have witnessed students in other batches struggle with basic computer literacy and language barriers. I’m not sure how students are selected for the bootcamp but can see advantages of having a stricter process in place.
• Collaboration with employers. While I did Le Wagon there was not opportunity for an apprenticeship and work placement post bootcamp. I know a lot of other bootcamps work in a way where you apply for the bootcamp AND a company and you start working in the company right after graduation. If I were to do it all again I would try to get into a bootcamp that offers work placement (though they are harder to get into and the interview process takes much longer)
• Classroom learning. The lecturers were clearly very skilled in all things coding and have deep knowledge of web development. Unfortunately, that is sometimes not enough to be a great teacher – some lecturers were not able to read the room (majority of students struggling to understand topics), moved through the topics very quickly or found it difficult to explain topics to students with no previous knowledge. My advice to students would be to ask, ask and ask. As soon as something is unclear ask the teacher questions. Most of the time other students will be having the same questions and if you get lost in the first 20 minutes of a lecture it will be very difficult to keep up. I don’t know how much pedagogic training teachers are getting but I feel this would be helpful

  Tipps:

• DO THE PREWORK – all of it (especially the Codeacademy Ruby course). This was such a fundamental basis and without it you will have a hard time especially at the start
• Ask questions and make use of the teaching assistants and teachers to clarify concepts you are struggling with
• Have fun and connect with your fellow students – the emotional support and networking opportunities you get from fellow students is second to none
• Give it your all.

My name is Williams. I went to the University to study International Commerce when I was 16 years old and it is funny because I worked in that field for 16 years after I graduated when I decided to change career.  Originally, I wanted to study Computer Engineering, but I didn't get accepted at the university, so when I found the bootcamp at LeWagon and saw their program I didn’t hesitate to get enrolled.  I didn’t have the money to pay for bootcamp nor the bank lended me the money, but I am the type of person that takes obstacles as an invitation to continue insisting until I get what I want. Somehow I got the money to pay for the program and buy the computer!  Before the bootcamp the only thing I knew was using vlookup in excel, imagine! But like I say, where there is a limitation or an obstacle I am there, ready to go through it, learn the lesson and move on.   What did you like about the bootcamp?  I liked its structure (backend, frontend), the content (ruby, ruby on rails, database, CSS, JavaScript, and the project week), the resources available (videos, teachers in each class, slack), the exercises (available 24/7), the frustration (as a little preview for the job market), the interaction between our classmates, the cultural diversity and each one’s background, but what I liked the most was going each Saturday to the campus and seeing my classmates.   What are you doing now?  I am still studying, but now that I have the structure I was missing I feel confident in the path I am taking. I believe in myself. I go as a turtle, slowly but surely. As I want to continue my journey as a Front End developer I am focusing on JavaScript at the moment.   Why did you choose Le Wagon?  Because of its origin (created by French engineers and lawyers) and the brand color (red = action). The French are known for being demanding, highly critical, so I knew the bootcamp was going to be of high quality. I also found their group in meetup.com and saw the regularity of activities they were holding, so I trusted in what I saw and didn’t get disappointed.  Who would you recommend the bootcamp to?  To everybody! As a friend told me before I got enrolled with LeWagon. Today, coding is what excel used to be in the 90’s. The one who knows coding gets the job!  It was scary, but the fear won’t disappear until you face it. So I did and so can you. Don’t let your age hold you back. Believe in yourself. When I joined Le Wagon, I was a literary translator with absolutely no knowledge of web development. I was worried about not being able to understand a thing and that maybe teachers would'nt take much time with me and would assist only the best students. I'm a graphic designer who decided to become a developer a while ago. I already had experience in the field and I knew a bit of coding thanks to some online courses, but I felt that I was lacking a lot of structure and knowledge to get better at my job. Then I found Le Wagon and I attended a lot of their free workshops and events, just to see if they were what I was looking for, and I immediately loved the content and energy they all had. This was one of the best experiences of my life: I had the opportunity to meet great people, got to learn a lot from the TAs and other students, and I really felt that the effort and time I put on this was absolutely rewarding. I also had a great time working on our final project and felt super proud of creating a full and functional app from scratch. Thanks to Le Wagon's bootcamp I finally feel confident to work with my peers and do tasks that I never thought I would.
As a side note, you don't need to have any previous experience! A lot of my classmates were working in completely different areas and we all managed pretty well. I took the part-time bootcamp since I have a full-time job, and I feel that it was perfect for me because I had the time to digest the content and put more work on the final weeks. At first, I did not have any clue about the Le Wagon organisation when I heard it, however within few google searches I quickly realized how massive of an organisation it is. I started reading reviews and was genuinely surprised to see the success stories of their graduates especially those new in web development. Having the idea it is a recipe that works, I started this course with a lot of hope and ambition. The challenges (exercises) were such real roller of a ride, one moment you feel satisfied about one challenge when completed and one where you are stuck however there is always light at the end of the tunnel whether a quick break or the teachers (and teacher assistant). The whole experience was amazing, unforgettable and will strongly recommend anyone that is willing to change field or entering this field to pursue this course. Completing the Le Wagon bootcamp in web development is an incredibly satisfying experience that has left me with a newfound sense of self-belief. Doing the Web Development bootcamp at Le Wagon Lisbon was the best learning experience I’ve ever had. It offers an intensively immersive and hands-on learning experience, while providing a very welcoming environment for bonding both with my colleagues and all the staff.


The program is designed to equip all the students with (super) practical skills in Web Development, which include Ruby on Rails, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Git, among others. At the end of the bootcamp it allowed me to develop my own projects and explore other frameworks and programming languages, which otherwise I couldn’t. And that’s the key advantage of doing the bootcamp, all the learning is transferrable to other languages, and it equips you to the job market and its specificities.

After leaving my job as a BIM modeler many years back & drifting from one odd job to the other, I decided that I had to venture out of my comfort zone and pick up a new skill to stay relevant in the working world. 

I stumbled upon Le Wagon's bootcamp when searching online, and gave the course a try due to their affordable fees and great reviews. It was honestly a daunting challenge going through the bootcamp, since I came from a mostly design-based industry and programming was entirely foreign to me. 

With the help of our teachers, teaching assistants and like-minded classmates who were all striving to work hard together, it turned out to be an amazing experience. I was astonished with what I could do and build on my own after the course, and I was proud to showcase our group's production website on my portfolio & resume.

Coding might be really tough, especially if it's all entirely new to you. You might feel like giving up halfway, but the teachers are very patient and willing to guide you through, even for the minor stuff.  I would recommend anyone who is looking to career-switch to give it at try! Read less

A former researcher in neuroimaging, I had previous experience with coding in MATLAB and analyzing neural data but I was lacking expertise with more general databases in non-research specific domains and knowledge in Python, which is mostly required in data science jobs. Therefore, I joined Le Wagon to get a certified training and a more intensive hands-on experience. I had done summer schools before in an academic context, but this bootcamp exceeded my expectations: the course was tailored for all levels of education and different backgrounds and would lead you progressively but fast from the general theory to very specific use cases. Numerous Teaching Assistants were available all day for the students providing help and support with the coding exercises and all the classes were up to date on the latest recent AI development. Lots of social networking and professional events were organized during the weeks of the bootcamp and overall the format was fun and engaging. Le Wagon was a great learning experience. To be honest, I learned more than I expected from a bootcamp and I was impressed by what I could build at the end of the nine weeks (and I was a complete beginner, never coded in my life before). It's intense but their methodology is awesome, you really learn by doing. And their online learning platform is really well built, it's a great support in addition to the teachers and teacher assistant. You can find recording of every class and detailed correction of each exercice as well as detailed tutorials, really useful (and the best for me is that you keep your access to it after the bootcamp, you even get access to the update/new class they post). Beyond the learning experience, I really enjoyed my time there because I got to meet a really diverse group of people in term of age and experiences (which you rarely do in your job or even in university). I wanted to do Le Wagon to improve my tech skills before starting my own tech company, I applied because a lot of people told me good thins about it but I was not certain it was the best move when I started (afraid it might be a loss of time/money), in the end I really don't regret it!
