I recently completed the web development course at Code Institute, and overall, I found it to be a valuable learning experience.
The course is divided into five sections, each beginning with a theory block that includes explanatory videos and quick coding challenges. These theory blocks are well-structured and provide a solid foundation in the respective topics.Following the theory, each section features a prebuilt codealong project, where you replicate a project step-by-step using the concepts learned in the theory block. This practical approach really helped me connect the dots and solidify understanding.The personal projects are where I learned the most. They take up a significant portion of the course. Be prepared to invest a lot of time into these personal projects (80% of the full course time). It's very important to carefully read the project requirements multiple times. Missing even a small requirement can impact your grade significantly.
The theory is quite good, and there's a visible effort to keep the content up to date with modern technologies (html, css, javascript, python, jquery, django, stripe api, react and some more ...), though it's understandably difficult to have everything current at all times. The coding challenges, however, weren't always my cup of tea. They sometimes required specific answers, and minor syntax issues could cause hang-ups, which wouldn't have been an issue using an IDE, as the challenges are done completely within the browser just like with the 5-day coding challange that Code Institute makes avaliable as a taste of whats to come - though keep in mind that the course will get much more challenging compared to the 5-day challenges.
A major plus of the course is the monthly hackathons hosted online. These are excellent opportunities to gain team coding experience, learn agile development, and use Git.
For me, the best aspect of the course was the one-on-one help from a mentor. You have meetings three times for each project, each lasting 30 minutes. While I found this a bit short, it was incredibly helpful to get professional feedback from someone with experience. When I started the course, the lessons used to be 45 minutes which was definitely much more helpful (they got shortened while I was studying). These sessions were key in resolving issues and advancing through the course.
Additionally, the course offers job search assistance through a separate mini-course that helps you create your CV, teaches you about LinkedIn, the job market, and job interviews. There are also job announcements and listings in the course's Slack channel that you can apply to if they fit your profile. There's another 30-minute one-on-one session where you review your CV with an advisor for feedback. Ultimately, you're responsible for writing applications and finding a job that works for you. While this is fair, I feel the course could provide more hands-on assistance in this field given its pricetag (i.e. multiple coaching sessions).
As for the difficulty, it's hard to comment definitively as I had some prior coding knowledge. The course was challenging and required a big time commitment. I spent about 6 hours a day on it for 8 months, with 3 or 4 weekly breaks for holidays (maybe more :) who knows). It's possible to complete the course faster, but I believe the quality of my projects and what I learned would have suffered.
Overall, I would recommend Code Institute's web development course to anyone looking to gain practical skills in web development. I'm apart of the HR part time program and my experience to say the least is disappointing. the first half of the program is pair programming which you are matched with a random pair weekly who most often is "too busy" to pair with you, prefers to work solo or is flat out working ahead of you. When you reach out to address the issue of pairing, you will be told that it's normal and everyone seems to be having an issue with pairing and that staff will try to be more mindful of pairing. I mean come on its a part time program and within the first 3 weeks the structure of the program was clear so if you choose to stay, you should be able to follow the guidelines! How can you be set up for success when the first half of the program you are dependent on a partner that has anti pairing behaviors? However, If YOU work ahead and leave your partner behind, you will be reprimanded for it surprisingly. At this point because it continues to happen, I'm not sure ALL students who do this get reprimanded if you get what I am hinting at. That's not to say you won't meet some great people here. There are always diamonds in the rough. The curriculum needs a lot of work, and honestly some of it comes off as culturally insensitive. Hiring outside POC isn't going to change that, the curriculum needs a whole reboot. Some of videos is full of what they explain as "Bro-y" language but really the lecturer is an insensitive douche. In one of the videos the lecturer actually told a student they hadn't bothered to remember their name. WOW! The class was told they forgot to cut that part out. YIKES. Considering the cost of the program on top of my current experience only a few months in, I wouldn't recommend HR to anyone else to spend almost 20,000 on this bs. Most of the reviews on this platform are written by the parent company (CCS Global Tech) employees. Very little instruction but the instructor, they just make you watch outdated videos and then the instructor will just repeat the video. They do mock interviews that don't really match a real world scenario, just basic interview questions you can search online. As for job assistance, they recommend you can search on your own since they are much more focused on assisting their Talent Development Program graduates (basically kids that need a job to stay in the country). For the price ($9950) this program is a scam. Wastes 8 hours a day, no portfolio is developed besides a simple dashboard on tableau and powerbi. Instructors skipped python and snowflake sections, despite those skills being in demand in the area. Also the instructors seemed to be overworked and have to focus on delivering projects for the main organization. Over worked employees leads to in adequate teaching. Nice people but not worth your money, just look up the data engineering topics and use youtube to teach yourself.DataMasters is an Italy-based tech training provider offering an online, 12-week, self-paced Machine Learning Masterclass. Launch School is one of those things in life that you give a shot and it ends up being a cornerstone to your life journey. It is absolutely worth every penny, second, and drop of sweat you give it. It is not a "bootcamp" in that you can hope to achieve a career transition or new skillset in 3 months and be going about your new business, or passively spend a few minutes a day and hope to divine a whole profession's worth of insight. The curriculum is long and dense, but perfectly curated to optimize the time you'll spend on it. No frivolous "micro-learning" or shortcuts. I guarantee you that if you're serious about learning this and you're willing to put the effort in, you will absolutely get what you want out of it. I'm seriously so much better off for the career transition I made and could not have done it without Launch School.
A special shoutout, too, to their Capstone program. Their Core program feels like a mountain to climb and took me a good year and a half to complete it, but after looking ahead to the job market, I realized how much left there was to learn. They do a fantastic job building on the fundamentals that you've mastered and wrap around it the necessary knowledge of how to plug into a SWE position. Most importantly, too, they offer plenty of job-hunting assistance. Anyone who's spent a while looking for jobs knows how draining it is and having the resources and community backing you up is paramount to keeping a level head and putting your best foot forward on the next interview. The Capstone program is pricey but genuinely the most worthwhile expense I've ever had.
If you're still not sure of whether Launch School is for you, dig into the preparatory reading (completely free, at least it was when I went through LS). If it's meant to be, you'll be super jazzed to give it your all after the first few reading assignments.
