Coding Temple

I came into Coding Temple with very little coding experience. I wanted a Bootcamp with a well-structured and up-to-date curriculum for full-stack development.  Sam and Shoha were the best instructors anyone can ask for. I went into the full time program knowing little to nothing about coding.  The amount of progress I made from week 1 to week 10 is unbelievable.  I've learned so much and I cannot thank my instructors and the support staff enough for all of the support and guidance they provided.  They don't sugar coat it, it is very difficult and a lot of work, it takes a huge part of your time, but its extremely rewarding once you've finished.  I highly recommend the Coding Temple experience.  Read less

Coding Temple was my life for three months and in that time I really became a developer. I don't mean an expert on Python; I mean that I learned to think like a developer. The skills I developed in this bootcamp make me feel confident I can learn any language. That being said, I love Python and I hope to get a job using it.
My instructor Derek was excellent both at laying out the curriculum but also at answering questions, and my TA Lucas was absolutely essential to my success in the program. In my moments of doubt, Nicole was able to help me stay grounded and I was so lucky to have a group of students invested in each other. The student-led study groups organized made everything feel so much more manage-able and I strongly recommend future and current students do the same. Disclaimer: I have not been hired yet (but I only graduated a month ago).

Coding Temple was a great experience. I was a full-time student. I chose this bootcamp because it gave me a taste of front end, back end, and data, and also because of the job search support after graduating. I already had some Python, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript experience prior to enrolling, but I am still very happy with my decision. It lived up to my expectations and followed the curriculum available on their website pretty closely. Expect to be in class 9:30-4:30 everyday (sometimes ends 3:30-4:30). Some nights of homework took five hours and other nights took 30 minutes. Because it wasn't always a full day of coding with those shorter assignments, it was manageable. Projects took between 2-15 hours on the weekends (including most of Friday). Do not expect to be able to go out of town for a weekend trip during the bootcamp, but doing household chores, relaxing, and going to family gatherings was definitely doable. I didn't feel like my life was completely consumed by the bootcamp or that I was burned out at the end.

If you are joining this bootcamp (or any for that matter), be aware that you will not be an expert in anything right after graduation. They teach you some basics and how to learn quickly (which is the most important skill a developer can have), but it is up to you to dive further into topics you are interested in afterwards. However, to get started, the instructors were extremely helpful in answering questions or helping debug. Every class session started with 1-2 whiteboard problems with a student solving a question in front of the class. This was invaluable in preparing for technical interviews. I had Nate and Marcus as instructors, and I don't have a single complaint about them. They were fantastic and went above and beyond to help our cohort. They were often available outside of class hours even though they weren't obligated. And I know Nate spent many evenings after class working on lectures, supplemental videos, and technical issues. Other instructors/TAs are usually available when your main instructors are not. I've heard great things about other instructors, as well.

Job search support has been great so far. Thank you Marlene! She is basically always available to meet or answer quick questions. She is the main reason I joined the bootcamp. She helps you create a standout resume, write cover letters, fix up your LinkedIn profile, communicate with recruiters/employers, and negotiate salary. Without all of this help, I was and would still be lost. Again, I have not been hired yet. But I was surprised that within a week or two of graduation, I started an interview process with a startup and am now waiting to hear from them after a third and final round of interviews. You are not necessarily handed opportunities afterwards, and I think most people find jobs on their own. But the founder and some alumni do post some opportunities where you might have a slight advantage with the referral. You will finish with a full, diverse GitHub profile to show employers, but because of the nature of rushing through projects in a bootcamp, you will have to go back and touch some of them up afterwards.

Here are my very, very minor complaints that I think are worth mentioning. I think more time could have been spent on frameworks (React and Flask). I felt that we moved too quickly through those where we were practically copying what we learned in lecture in order to finish homework/projects. I think data analysis should be its own bootcamp separate from web development. It was nice to get an intro to data analysis, but that was not why I joined a web development bootcamp. I would have preferred to get rid of the last two weeks (data analysis) and add one additional week to each framework. However, many classmates of mine enjoyed data analysis and are searching for data jobs, so I know many would disagree with me. Also, I must say that my final project used React and was functionally significantly different than what we learned in class, and I was still able to use the knowledge I gained to build a project that I am very proud of. My only other minor issue was how much lecture time the instructor devoted to debugging and technical issues of other students where the student clearly did not try debugging on their own. Although, I'm not sure what the solution would be because everyone has bugs and technical issues from time to time, and you don't want to get behind. So if you are concerned about whether your questions will be answered, they absolutely will. There was definitely a no-man-left-behind mentality, for better or worse.

In my opinion, Coding Temple was a great investment. I would 100% do it again. Sure you could learn all of this for free online, but I tried that and could not stay disciplined to do it in a timely manner. This will keep you motivated, on a schedule, while also having someone who can answer your questions or help with debugging. Coming from the healthcare industry, I had no idea how to network or market myself when job searching in this industry, and now I do. This will give you the best chance at landing a job within the next year. And I believe the program will pay for itself many times over. Read less

Committing to a boot camp with out much knowledge of what you are getting into can be scary. The Coding Temple creates a fun, engaging environment to help you feel comfortable. The instructors are extremely knowledgeable and patient while willing to help you learn. Coding temple has many resources to assist in your learning experience and career coaches to help carve your career path! Also, it doesn’t end when you graduate, you become part of a community! I just want to start off by saying I knew zero, zilch, nada coming into this. I took the course with my boyfriend who is a faster learner than me so that was immensely helpful. He was able to explain things to me after class that some times helped me understand a little bit more but if that didn't help, the staff at Coding Temple is always eager to help and mostly available. Coding Temple boot camp tested me...that's for sure. I thought about giving up a few times. During my check in I was ready to...the towel was in the bucket...but they talked me back in...the staff is in incredible in the sense they never give up on you. They pump you up. I haven't exchanged much time with Marlene yet, but I have no doubt she will be able to help me find a job when the time comes. Everybody talked her up and my first time meeting with her she definitely lived up to those expectations and then some.... I guess to sum it all up Coding Temple was very time consuming and mentally demanding. If you decide to sign up with them be sure to clear your schedule and definitely do your pre homework, get familiar with the fundamentals that way you can get more out of class.. I wish I would've spent a little more time getting prepared but life happens...Even though I failed to prepare I learned a lot....I know way more than I did coming into this. I'm honestly amazed at my understanding now. My boyfriend even said, " You've come so far, if there was a video to capture your first day to now, wow."  Read less

This is a lengthy review but I am compelled to do so because of how great my experience was at Coding Temple.

I completed the online full-stack web development program just over one week ago. 10 weeks went by fast, but it is amazing how much material you cover in a relatively short amount of time. Of course, you get out what you put in, and the work cannot be done for you. But if you come prepared to work hard, and especially if you enjoy coding, you will benefit greatly from this program.

The amount of support present was perhaps my favorite part of the actual school. Not only were our instructors available after class (thanks again Nate & Marcus!), there were also a handful of TAs available during the evening, one or two during certain parts of the weekend, and they seemed to be adding more available sessions every couple of weeks. Instructors from other classes (Kevin & John!) were also happy to assist if they were available. The school Slack channel was extremely active and engaging, and there were multiple check-ins throughout the program to connect with us individually to make sure we were doing ok, or to set up a plan to get on track if there were issues; much of this is thanks to the wonderful student support advisor, Nicole!

Lots of 'extra-curricular' type of events as well which really boost the value of this school; guest speakers from the industry & student alumni throughout the course, periodic algorithm nights to practice code problems with other students & instructors, and alumni courses for after you graduate (e.g. Java, Tableau).

My only wish was that we had covered React a bit more in-depth, specifically State, Hooks, and Redux. I believe it was covered well enough for us to master after some further practice on our own (which is the real way to learn, anyways!) as well as 1-on-1 guidance from the instructors, but with the time required to simply get through building projects with React, we did not devote a lot of time to those specific aspects in great detail. Otherwise, I felt the curriculum was good.

Though the job search has just begun, I feel confident in my skills and in my knowledge of the industry and career networking strategies to be able to find a job that will be a good fit for my needs. We get plenty of job search guidance from the highly invigorating and motivating career support queen, Marlene. I truly feel in good hands and am excited to keep up the search.

I recommend this course to anyone who wants to learn full-stack development (and some data analysis!), and find a job in this awesome industry. Read less

I enrolled in Coding Temple's 10-week Full-Stack Web Development course in June 2021, and it was hands-down the best professional decision I've ever made.  Less than a month after completing the program I am accepting a Software Developer role, that Coding Temple has left me feeling fully prepared for.  I had some prior experience with programming upon entering the program, but my instructor Derek helped me take my skills to the next level. Less than a week after beginning the course I was writing code approximately 5x the speed I was before, and I learned a truly incredible amount about application design and best practices.  I was amazed how accessible all of the staff were; my instructor and my TA always responded to my random questions about the industry, and by the end of the course they felt like dear friends. Marlene, Coding Temple's Career Advisor, has been absolutely indispensable to me before and throughout the job search process. She helped me reframe my skills to give me the confidence I needed to represent myself well, and my resume is like night and day after her assistance.  Usually I find alumni activities tiresome, but for once I'm actually excited to continue being involved with Coding Temple after graduating.  I would recommend this program to anyone I know in a heartbeat. I chose this coding Boot Camp mainly because of the job support following, and now that I have completed the course I've come to realize the curriculum itself really prepares you for the coding interviews as well as teaching you the necessary tools so that you can enter the workforce and be can ready for what comes your way.  Read less

When I reached out, I didn't know anything about coding/programming or even how to read any of these software languages. The process was simple, and they even helped me with a tuition grant through the State of Illinois for displaced workers due to COVID. I feel much more comfortable with reading and writing the different languages and feel as if I can get a job easily with the help from their career coach as well. Coming as a recent bartender and car sales for the last 10 years, I can now start a new career path to help support my family.  Yes, the full-time commitment was extensive, but well worth it in the end. I highly recommend Sam as the instructor and Shoha & Tatyana as the teaching assistants - although everyone is readily available to help with any questions/comments/concerns.  Read less

The amount of support I received from Coding temple was phenomenal, from all the instructors we had (Joel, Terrell, and Ryan) to the Amazing Nicole, and ending with Marlene AKA Tiger Mom. Great communications, even around times when everyone is asleep there were always someone there to help when I had an issue. 
I am way more confident now in everything I am doing, and I hope one day I get to meet everyone in person.

Coming into this boot camp and being unsure of how I would come out as a developer left me feeling uneasy. Well, all I can say is after going through this boot camp, I am left speechless. I’ve always had this dream of learning to code and understanding the ins and outs of what actually went on behind the scenes of my favorite games, websites, applications, etc… but since I didn’t “go to school for it” years ago, I never really envisioned chasing that dream in any capacity until earlier this year.

The pandemic put a lot into perspective for me, including the importance of continuing my education and chasing my passions. I figured the only way to do this would be to go to school at night while working during the day, so I did… I started at Coding Temple with the hope of broadening my skill set and learning more about something I’d been curious about for so long.

To keep a long story short, I graduated recently… it was one of the most challenging sprints I’ve ever been a part of but I’m incredibly proud to say I did it. I went from knowing absolutely nothing about programming to presenting a full-stack application built from scratch in front of a room of peers and staff members.

So what’s my point? This experience continues to reinforce the idea that “the most difficult road oftentimes leads to the most beautiful destination.” This applies to everything… I’d love to challenge anyone reading this to give that thing you’ve always wanted to learn a little extra thought and really ask yourself, “why haven’t I started?” If it's related to coding, you've found the right place. You will get what you put into it without a doubt. Try not to let the fear of coming up short keep you from starting.

After graduating from University, I spent almost three years in and out of jobs, searching for the right career. When the pandemic hit in the early Spring of 2020, I quickly became unemployed and realized it was time for a bigger change. I spent the next few months teaching myself to code through various resources, but constantly felt lost and struggled to make routine make progress on my own; that's when I turned to Coding Temple.

Unsure whether I was ready to commit entirely to Data Analytics, I joined Coding Temple's Full-Stack Python and Data Science live (but because of Covid) online course, where I was given exposure to both front & back-end web development as well as many of the tools used in creating, extracting, and analyzing data. With a small cohort of only 9 students, a clever and smart TA in Sam, and a brilliant teacher in Derek, I always felt like my questions could be answered and ideas explored. 

The way the course is structured prepares you for long-term success. I always tell people, I not only learned how to code at Coding Temple but also how to keeping learning more. The curriculum is designed around fast-paced, live learning during the week, and in-depth projects on the weekends to solidify everything you've learned. That, along with regular practice problems in- and outside the classroom keep you continuously building your repertoire. It's tough, but good things don't come easy and coding is a use-it or lose-it skillset.

Lastly, I was extremely appreciative of and impressed by the administrative and operational staff at Coding Temple. Nicole, the student relations manager, was incredibly helpful in empathizing with students, keeping them on track for success with regular chats and check-ins, in addition to the bi-weekly game nights that helped loosen up a ton with one another. Ripal, the founder, made sure the graduates were prepared for success the moment they graduated, providing many networking connections to jumpstart your search as well as the opportunity to attend educational webinars, practice interviews, and skill-building workshops. Finally, there was Marlene, the career coach, who excels at providing each and every graduate the support they need to find just a job, but the right job. The energy she brings keeps you going in the inevitably long job search that comes with any career change, especially when things seem slow and you need her most. I haven't thanked her enough but her guidance is an invaluable asset to the bootcamp.

As with any bootcamp, the course is only the beginning. You have to be ready to put in even more effort to continue learning afterward while keeping your foot on the gas with job applications. I am confident the Coding Temple prepared me entirely for that endeavor and I am thankful to have changed my career for the better with their help. Read less

I loved my experience with Coding Temple and would recommend it to anyone wanted to go into Software Development. It offers small class sizes, live instruction, great career support and a curriculum that is a mix of Software Dev and Data. 

If you've never heard of Coding Temple, don't worry, neither had I when I decided, after a ton of research, to attend their Python+Data full time bootcamp in April 2021.  At the time I had been doing self-study on Coursera and Codecademy for a couple months when I decided to attend a bootcamp. I was looking for real-time instruction (not just pre-recorded content) and I wanted a carefully thought out curriculum that reflected the stacks and skills potential employers were looking for  I researched several bootcamps, but ultimately chose Coding Temple for the following reasons:  #1: At the time I wasn't sure if I wanted to go into Data or into Software Dev, and Coding Temple's curriculum has a mix of both #2: By my count, their 10 week full time program includes 250-300+ hours of live (via Zoom) instructor lead content. #3: Their cohort sizes are small, averaging 12 students per cohort, which means way more one-on-one opportunities. #4: Lower tuition compared to many similar bootcamps out there.  

The day I sent in my deposit for Coding Temple was simultaneously one of the most exciting and most stressful days!  Had I made the right choice to go with this program that most people I asked had never heard of? 

Answer: Choosing Coding Temple turned out to be the BEST decision! From the first day of class, I loved every minute of my experience, was sad when it was over and HIGHLY recommend this program to anyone looking to launch a career into the software dev / data field. While the bootcamp is--as you would expect from the word "bootcamp"--an intense and time-consuming 10 weeks, it was SO fulfilling and so much fun! Of course it was challenging and I had my moments of struggle, like when trying to grasp to concept of Object Oriented Programing made me cry.  Coding Temple Staff were great. My main instructor Brian and teaching assistant Kevin were great! They know "all the things" but are simultaneously able to boil down complex topics into concepts that noobs like me can understand.  They teach with limitless patience. They watched me struggle thru simple python problems, but were always helpful and supportive.  Nicole is the student experience coordinator, but I like to think of her as the Coding Temple "cruise director."  She was always there to talk to if I had concerns, for those times I was struggling to learn a concept in class, and also for the exciting times!  It was nice to feel like there was a person who I could reach out to for any reason at all. Finally, Marlene is the career coach and, boy is she a great resource!  I joined a bootcamp because I wanted to make a career transition from a non-tech field.  I've never been super awesome at the job hunt and self-promotion type stuff. Marlene is there to provide tons of guidance on how to approach your job search, how to answer interview questions, how to set up your Linkedin and personal Portfolio. I think without Marlene helping me in the job search journey I'd be totally lost!

My only caveat about Coding Temple is this:  While the curriculum we covered in class was exactly true to advertising (aka: the topics we covered were exactly as they were outlined in the week-by-week course description in their marketing materials), in my opinion its a bit of a stretch to call the program "Python + Data Science", because the curriculum is a little weak on the Data Science portion.  The only data-specific part of the curriculum consists of 1 week on Numpy/Pandas/Matplotip and 1 week on SQL.  We did not cover any statistics or machine learning topics, which seem to be cornerstones to a lot of Data Science jobs. The rest of the curriculum was pretty much all Software Dev topics and projects.  In my opinion, if you know for sure that you want to go into data science, the curriculum as it was during my cohort may not be the best fit for you.  But, if--like me--you are going into a bootcamp undecided as to if you want to be a Developer or a Data Analyst / Scientist,  then Coding Temple is good in that it gives you a taste of both... its just that the Software Dev taste is bigger. 

In summary, Coding Temple was a fantastic experience and I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to go into software development! Putting down a big chunk of money on a program like this is stressful, but I have absolutely no reservations or regrets about spending the money to attend this program. I feel like my life is now slit between BCT--before Coding Temple--and ACT--After Coding Temple. Looking forward to my future as a python developer!  Read less

Wow, what a lovely time. Sometimes I look back to Ryan from a year ago and think how sad it was that past Ryan couldn't code. I wake up every morning with peace of mind knowing I did past and future Ryan a great service. 
This bootcamp is great and not once did i have to crawl under barbed-wire. The staff at Coding Temple is insanely patient, perhaps more patient with me than I was with myself. This stuff is hard but I can't imagine learning it from anyone or anywhere else. 
Nicole is super sweet and always provides encouragement and a shoulder to cry on when the stress is high. She brought in relevant industry professionals for Q&A's. These sessions were amazing and really helped shape my idea of what I wanted to do after finishing the course.  

Derek sensei is an incredible instructor who provided excellent lectures accompanied by real world advice from his time as a Software Engineer. It was really good insight into what to expect post grad. 

Speaking of post-grad, you might be thinking "Oh no I'm going to finish this course but I don't know how to look for jobs and my resume hasn't been updated in 7 years because i haven't job searched since college and settled into a low-paying, non-profit job that ended up laying me off anyway"

WELL TO THAT I SAY:
You get a Marlene who knows everything about everything when it comes to the job search. Sometimes it seems like she invented the process. You can ask her anything, there are no dumb questions and as mentioned above, she is super patient. 

Everyone here is great, the staff and the students. They really nurture community so you have resources during and after your time at Coding Temple. But really, your time at Coding Temple never ends because the knowledge and friendships you gain along the way are eternal.  Read less
