Turing College

I'm finishing the last parts of the Turing College Data Analytics course and want to share my experience with those who are considering joining.

Community:
The colleagues and lecturers I have met are goal-oriented and very motivating. Studying is not easy, but with the support of others, even if you need encouragement, the journey becomes much easier. And if you have any questions about your studies, Turing College offers several ways to get help very quickly. 

Flexibility:
This was very important for me personally to be able to plan my study time and reviews of projects by myself.

Study materials and projects:
I can say that the study material covers all the information needed for the subject and even encourages you to go deeper if you want. In addition, you can put this knowledge into practice in projects (which are challenging) that are reviewed by experts in the field. And that's great, because they review your individual work and give you feedback based on their practical experience. You will also get invaluable advice that will help you continue to perform better as a professional.

So, in conclusion, Turing College has exceeded my study expectations and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to become a data analyst and join this community. Read less

After 20 years in administrative work, I decided to change my career. I chose the Data Analytics course at Turing College, and I found the program extremely useful. Data Analytics: started in August 2023, expect to finish in August 2024. 

Turing College gives a strong foundation in SQL, Tableau/Power BI and Python, has an excellent community of peers and mentors in industry, practical tasks that simulate the day-to-day role of a data analyst, and constant support throughout the job-hunting process. 

Positives: 

1)            The syllabus is strong and always being updated. 

Students are exposed to SQL in their first month of studies, going from beginner to advanced in a couple of months. (The final SQL project in the second month is the most advanced SQL task I have come across, so after completing that, my SQL skills were elevated to the level expected for a junior data analyst. Turing ensures that we build on and reinforce those SQL skills in later modules, to the point where I now feel very confident in my technical skills). 

As for Python, when I joined the module was just over a month long, so I have some basic knowledge of Python, enough to apply to logistic regression and risk analysis. Recently, however, Turing has updated the syllabus to put more emphasis on the importance of students having strong Python skills, so the module has now been expanded to a three-month module. I think this is excellent and shows that Turing has its finger on the pulse of current industry trends and requirements. 

2)            Industry professionals are easy to access and provide great mentoring. 

With a couple of exceptions, every project (between 10 and 15, depending on the specialisations you choose) is reviewed by an industry professional (from companies such as IBM, Vinted, Western Union, etc…), so you get very detailed feedback, an insight into how this project would be approached in the real world, and an opportunity to build a relationship with a potential mentor. 

3)            The community is very active and supportive. 

Open sessions are held multiple times a day to help learners if they’re stuck on a project, while weekly standups give learners a chance to interact with other people who started at the same time as they did (in the presence of an industry mentor), which helps foster a great community feel. 

Even though the studies are online, I have made a new friendship group from my studies, something that I haven’t experienced when studying online elsewhere (e.g. in my MSc programme at university). 

There are also dedicated weekly standups for those who are in the endorsement and hiring stage, which helps to guide you during the job search. 

Any negatives? 

I have heard the occasional complaint about the quality of some peer reviews, but I would say this is the exception rather than the rule. All of my peer reviews have been good, many have been exceptional, and anyone reviewing your work must have passed the project already, which gives some quality control. 

I would be wary of expecting to finish the programme in the time it says on the website. It says 6-10 months for the data analytics programme, but 10 months is more realistic than 6. Those who finish in 6 may complete the core modules, but if you want to get the most out of the programme I think it makes a lot of sense to take as many specialisation modules as you can (of which Python is one), so you should assume it will take longer than you think. 

Will it get me a job? 

I can’t speak from my experience, because I’m not at the stage where I’m applying, but a few people from my batch have already landed data analyst jobs, despite not yet finishing the programme. Turing’s endorsement/hiring preparation process is rigorous, and from speaking to friends outside of Turing, we learn more in-depth SQL at Turing than we would need in our day-to-day job, so I’m confident that the transition from Turing to the job market will be smooth. 

As with many things, you get out what you put in. If you’re dedicated to switching careers into data analytics, I'm confident that you will find the programme at Turing very rewarding.  Read less

I highly recommend the Data Science Program at Turing College. The program is well-structured, self-paced, and the support from the college is exceptional. They are quick to help rather than being stubborn, ensuring that any issues or questions are promptly addressed.One of the standout features of the program is the availability of the Junior Team Leads (JTLs), who are accessible almost all day, every day. This constant availability is crucial for maintaining a steady learning pace and addressing doubts as they arise. The Senior Team Leads (STLs) are available on specific days, and both the JTLs and STLs are incredibly helpful and respectful.The program offers a wealth of material sourced from different universities and resources, which greatly aids in understanding the various subjects covered. I am happy that I have the chance to learn at Turing College! It is super nice that you have the option to learn at your own pace and connect with many motivated people from different backgrounds. This course is suitable for people without marketing experience as well. The training material covers a wide range of topics and gives you the option to dive deeper into the ones that are most interesting to you. Additionally, you have the option to discuss and share insights with your peers. Turing has a super helpful community where everyone tries to help if you get stuck. There are many online events that can be useful for your future, and some in-person events that are very useful for networking. Finally, your feedback is valuable! I love their feedback culture, where after each sprint and module, you can leave feedback for future training improvements and also receive and give feedback to your peers. Read less

Curriculum is on-point and constantly updated, but that's the easy part. Turing College stands out in a different way.

First of all, the community. There actually is one with active participation from people with all experience levels and that helps you advance faster than by trying to look things up online.

2nd, clear deadlines with tasks to complete and review with peers and seniors as well as weekly standups make you find time for learning when you typically wouldn't.

3rd, the staff's support is always there, fast, helpful, and kind. You're amazing!

In terms of drawbacks, probably the only thing is that getting a review can be tricky during summertime with your peers more interested in chilling by the lake, but staff comes to help if this begins to get frustrating and I'm sure it will only get better with scale.

So to round it all up, you have a nice mix of up to date materials, mentorship from folks working in the field, community support from peers, some pressure to stay on path and finish the course, fast technical support from staff, and probably something else I forgot to mention. Read less

Attending Turing College has been the most remarkable educational experience I've ever had. The bite-sized, interactive, and hands-on learning approach is exceptionally engaging, and the self-paced structure ensures that I never felt overwhelmed. This online school offers several well thought of and greatly structured courses regarding data fields, web development and digital marketing. Because there are no lectures - all of the learning material is uploaded already, students get to learn at their own pace, in their own time. And yet, if they have any questions - they can always contact experts of their respective fields for guidance. Highly recommend this online school for anyone who loves to learn about various highly sought of professions in a very non-binding and free manner. I have finished data analytics and I am currently studying digital marketing - all at Turing College. While I do occasionally have to seek out external material to learn a subject, it is more usually the case that I have to bypass certain material because it's simply too much. Read less

for me the most fittable model of learning. there is no lessons where you have to participate. so I can choose when I will learn what I need for that part. 
to finish one part here we need to get reviews and marks ofcourse:) ( another very good part at this school) 
so we are getting insights about what we did. and actually we can be reviewers here too. to get inspiration and maybe to help other students to understand main keys of work better

Student of the Data Science course here. I would absolutely recommend Turing College for anyone looking to learn about DS/ML/AI. Turing College's flexible model for supporting learners provides technical guidance and structure while allowing learning across a range of different backgrounds, needs, time zones and life schedules. At the same time, I enjoyed the cameraderie and motivation of working through the curriculum with a fixed cohort of learners. The system of fostering mutual learning through code reviews, by posting/answering questions on Discord, and informal networking definitely worked for me. This experience has made me realise how much of the formal education I previously experienced involved self-learning anyway, but with more logistical constraints.  All my interactions with TC staff as well as learners and STLs/JTLs have been very positive and helpful; I believe this is something TC actively fosters. Finally, I have been impressed with how TC has regularly solicited feedback from learners and implemented suggested changes during my learning journey.  Read less

I really enjoy the studies at Turing College. Although the learning material can be quite challenging at times, it is very engaging and focuses on constantly developing practical skills.

The structure of the curriculum is divided into sprints with clear deadlines and weekly stand-up sessions, where you discuss your progress. Completing a project means that it gets reviewed by a Senior Team Lead and a peer, ensuring that the project meets a high standard of quality. Working on projects helps tremendously for applying what was taught in the learning material.

Another great thing about Turing is the community. If you are struggling with the learning material - Junior Team Leads and peers try to do their best to help. In general, your peers will be people who are passionate about their fields, so that will additionally help to expand your understanding of the topics being taught.

My experience from studying Web Development has been greatly enriching. There is a lot to learn, and the learning curve might be steep, but I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to start a career in this field. Read less
