Command Shift is a code school that runs a part-time, online coding bootcamp, teaching full stack software development. Their flagship 28-week BOOTCAMP course teaches students the fundamentals of software development with JavaScript, including industry best practices such as Test-Driven Development and Object-Oriented Programming. Students later go on to gain insight into backend development, with Node.js, Express, MySQL and Docker, followed by front end development where they learn how to build interactive front end applications with React, HTML and CSS. The course is project-led, and students build up a portfolio of 10-12 projects throughout, which they can use to demonstrate their skills for entry-level Software Development roles.   Applicants to Command Shift require no prior coding experience, other than completing the school’s free online INTRO course, which contains 25 hours of introductory content. This is followed up by an interview with a member of their team, who will assess the applicant’s motivation and suitability for the course. Command Shift strongly encourages applicants from underrepresented groups in the tech space, offering a £500 Diversity Grant to any applicants that identify as a woman or non-binary, are from a BAME background and/or have a disability. They offer flexible payment options to all applicants including Income Share Agreements and interest-free finance.   All students of the BOOTCAMP course can access career guidance from a dedicated Careers Adviser during and after the course, who can assist in helping them to write CVs and cover letters, practice technical tests and prepare for interviews. In addition, Command Shift also hosts regular talks with employers, and works directly with employers from time-to-time to place students.   Command Shift was formerly known as Manchester Codes.

Vital in securing my first role in tech

Over lockdown I decided I needed a career change. I was working in recruitment and although I didn't dislike the role I knew it wasn't what I wanted to be doing for the rest of my life either. Full-time bootcamps were out of the question as I could not...

Tough 24 weeks but worth the effort

My experience with Manchester Codes was great. I mean it was possibly one of the toughest period of my life, even if I have had lots of experiences in working and studying. The course is really intense but in the same time it was also one of the most...

    Great, flexible bootcamp

I finished the Software Engineer FastTrack a few months ago and I was able to find a software engineer job after around 2 months of job hunting. Overall, the bootcamp was a very positive experience, largely because tutors are helpful, knowledgeable and...

    Don't waste your money!

Having completed the fast-track course, I can say that this was the largest waste of money I have ever spent and definitely the worst choice from all the options I had with other courses in the area.

    Kirsty Devlin of Command Shift

    Chief of Operations

    Dec 09, 2020

Firstly, thank you for giving us the opportunity to address you directly.
The first 4 weeks of our curriculum are designed to be very hands off and therefore are both a combination of bespoke and external resources in order to get students used to documentation and resources available online, as this is essential for when students embark onto their first roles into technology. This is communicated with students at the beginning. After this initial 4 weeks material does become more guided and specific. You joined our course in a difficult time when we were at the start of the COVID lockdown and whilst new staff members were being onboarded. We are sorry to hear that you felt we didn't deliver on your expectations. We are regularly reviewing our curriculum based on student feedback and to keep up to date with industry, and we did recently make changes to our backend module. It did come to our attention that there were some mistakes in a recent revision which have now been resolved. In response to student feedback on these changes, we did offer students a study break and additional 121 support.

A careers advisor has been in place for the last 3 months and has been available to offer career support to all students past and present, regardless of when they have finished the course. We do encourage you to make use of them and to book in an appointment at your earliest convenience. We have seen a huge increase in the number of students receiving job offers (Jaguar Land Rover, Accenture to name a few) despite studying remotely and are confident that some of the issues you raised have now been resolved. Thank you for bringing this to our attention, we are extremely grateful for your feedback and sorry that you felt we fell short of your expectations.

Finishing on a positive note, we are starting to see improvements in the job market and encourage you to utilise the community, our internal events, and our ongoing careers support to make the most of all of the new opportunities on the horizon in 2021.
