Nucamp

I chose Nucamp because it offered a fundamentals course, allowing me to gauge whether I'd like the material and methods of presentation before committing to a full bootcamp. I was very happy with the fundamentals course and learned a lot; plus, it was a low-cost option. Although I can't compare it to other similar courses, I was very satisfied with what I was able to take away from this. The structure of the weekly curriculum and the four hour zoom class on weekends was perfect for me, easy to stay on top of, and the presentation was compelling and interactive, so I never got bored or checked out. Nucamp was the most affordable coding school I could find in my budget range. The online weekly lessons were easy to follow and assignments feedback really helped me. I would recommend Nucamp to anyone who is a true beginner in the web development world.  I literally started this course with zero knowledge, and the terms and practices that I learned here were foundational for knowing how to do basic function, find more information and take my work in a direction that aligns with my purpose for knowing how to organize and bring life to a website.   Read less

Bootcamp was good for learning the necessary languages to get into the field. Instructor was always available when needed and took a lot of time helping students when they needed her. The instructor also learned along with the students and helped them solve an issue she doesn't know herself, but she went out of her way and researched them herself to help the students. Read less

 This is a review for the four week introductory programming boot camp. 

My long-term goal is to learn how to build enterprise-level websites (webapps) using modern languages and methods. Building websites is something I really want to do (I have a ton of great ideas but can’t afford to hire a developer.)  

I had three goals for this bootcamp: 1. to get more experience with HTML, CSS and JavaScript and 2. See where my skills would need to be to successfully complete the 22-week full stack programming course and 3. Get career advice from the instructor on my long-term goal. 

I am pleased to report Nucamp exceeded my expectations. If you want know how specifically, read on. 

The biggest challenge I’ve faced over the years trying to reach my goal is coding does not come naturally to me. Some folks get it right away, I don’t. I have to work hard at it. (Some programming snobs have told me not to try, but I don’t listen to them. Never have, never will.) 

Prior to this course, I have learned enough HTML and CSS to build a simple website from tutorials on the web. I also started learning about JavaScript. Last year I took a C# class a local community college to learn more about programming. However, C# really didn’t help me get closer to my goal of building websites or help me become a full stack developer.  

However, that instructor was able to give me more information about the languages I would need to learn to develop modern web applications. I chose Nucamp as the next step in my learning, as my research showed that the most popular websites in the world are built with JavaScript, React, MongoDB, Bootstrap – all the things Nucamp teaches. That was one reason. 

My second reason for choosing Nucamp was I liked the format of the classes: you spend the week watching videos, doing code challenges and then come together on Saturday and work together as a class to code a project. 

I’ve tried classes without an instructor before (Udemy) and also read a lot of books, but I’ve always preferred working with a group: it keeps you going and it’s great to have an instructor when you’re stuck. 

I decided to start with the four-week class before attempting the 22 week full stack program, and I am so glad I went this route. 

Just as I hoped, Nucamp did a great job in designing their instruction: the videos and class lectures were very precise and clear, and there was no extraneous information. The code challenges we did in class were key to understanding and using what we had read about, and the project we all did together on Saturday was extremely challenging, but do-able. 

My instructor was instrumental in helping me finish the code challenges, and when I didn't finish the week 3 exercise in class on Saturday, we zoomed on Monday to work on it together. That was awesome. That is exactly the support I wanted and needed. 

 Even though Nucamp says don't start working on the weekly class project ahead of time, I did so I could spend time reviewing code rather than trying to figure it out on the fly. That way I used the instructor's time to go over the parts of the code I was grappling with, and even did some of the advanced challenges. 

I loved doing the weekly projects, and my only complaint (it's not even a complaint, more of a concern) about the course is I wish there were more JavaScript projects that we could do on our own, projects that would get harder and would lead up to the project we did on Saturday.  For example, an optional Monday project, a Tuesday project and so on. Watching the code is okay, but building something and seeing it work – no matter how small - is super satisfying. Finishing our project on Saturday and thinking "I coded that" was a great feeling. 

Another thing I loved were the resources that were given (W3 Schools was a crucial resource while building the projects) as well as how to use Visual Studio, Chrome developer tools, debugging, using the console etc. I know those are essential for coding professionally. 

If you're thinking about this course my recommendation is as follows: if you're a natural coder AND you have the time to commit to a course like this, dive in. You won't be disappointed. If you are not a natural coder (like me) then I would definitely consider reading up on JavaScript – either Google's grasshopper game, a Udemy course, or read a book – as a warmup before taking the bootcamp. Or you can just do it without any prior knowledge, but I suggest you budget extra time for that. You’ll spend a lot of time digging through W3 schools and re-watching the videos going “how the heck do I code that?!” 

Even though I finished the course, there are a lot of areas that I want to go back and really master before moving on to the 22-week course. The good news is you get access to course and materials for life. 

Overall, it was fun working with the instructor and the group. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience, and now I know exactly what I need to know to successfully complete the 22 week course. I have a feeling I haven't felt in a long time: I'm on my way!

At the beginning i was a little doubtful cause all the academies i found were really expensive, with nucamp the investment was smaller so i took the risk. i think this has been the best investment i've ever done! the program is amazing! teacher are great, the experience its very personalized. the material is great and easy to understand.  Read less

I greatly appreciated the small group sizes and the encouragement to work in smaller and "larger" groups.  The instructor was readily available and adapted quickly to group and individual needs.  The material is presented in a manner to introduce topics and show how to integrate and execute them.  It does take self study and initiative to expand each of these skill sets to an actual marketable skillset; however, there is a NuCamp community ready and willing to provide assistance.  You will get out of it what you put into it. I chose Nucamp because its cheaper and I didn't have to commute.
My experience was informative and I gained a lot of knowledge.
The instructor was on point on time during the workshops and available any other day.
I think the workshop hours should be 6 hrs because as you progress there's a lot of material to cover plus the assignment coordination is very helpful. Read less

NUcamp provides the fundamentals needed to help you set a great learning route. I tried doing in my own and I got caught up on a while loop without a break statement. Learning coding takes longer than what the fundamental course is suppose to teach, BUT it pushes you towards a structure for you to continue.
