We know that our Toronto school has struggled to deliver what you initially expected entering the web development full-time program. We were facing many challenges during your particular cohort, and were trying our best to support students while rebuilding staff teams and company culture. Scot tells us why RED Academy graduates have an edge over university grads, why he believes in supporting current employees as they learn more about digital marketing, and what employers can do to hire the best bootcampers.     Q&A

    Tell us about Digital Hot Sauce and your role there!

    Hot Sauce is a boutique digital growth agency based in Vancouver. Our vision is to help fuel 1000 community-bettering organizations by leveraging digital marketing. We partner with clients that engage both our head and our hearts.

    I’m the CEO at Hot Sauce and I lead our 11-person team.

    So three digital marketers on your team are RED Academy graduates?

    More than that, actually. We’ve hired three RED Academy grads and we also send current employees to the RED Academy part-time course to round out and upgrade their skills. For example, if they need a broader knowledge base in an area that they don't know as well – they’re strong in analytics but want to go further into PPC – then we would send them to RED Academy.

    How did you get connected to RED Academy as a potential source for talent?

    Since RED Academy is local in Vancouver, and I’m involved in the agency and startup community, it was on my radar alongside some of the other schools in Vancouver. I went to a RED Academy hiring event; they were graduating a digital marketing cohort and those are the skills we specifically hire for. I wanted to get a feel for the level of knowledge that their grads had and the type of work they did. It was a great place to meet several graduates at once.

    At that first hiring event, I struck up a conversation with two graduates, then followed up when we were hiring. I also have a relationship with the school, so RED Academy will  highlight a few of the alumni that they think fit with the role that we're hiring for. We've been able to build a good relationship with them and trust them – they save us a lot of time.

    We know that anybody RED recommends is going to come into the interview with a really solid of base level digital marketing background. At this stage, I would prefer a RED Academy grad to a four-year marketing degree grad.

    Which roles have you hired those RED Academy grads for? What are they working on day-to-day?

    We’ve hired RED Academy grads into Junior Coordinator roles. At Digital Hot Sauce, we hire Interns, then Junior Coordinators, then Coordinators and then our organization splits into tracks. Depending on an employee’s competencies, they can go into project management, account management, strategy, client interactions. Or they can go into a specialist role like SEO (search engine optimization), PPC (pay-per-click), copywriting, design, etc.

    Typically, we're able to segment our RED Academy hires pretty easily into one of these tracks: are you a creative marketer or are you a data marketer or technical marketer? From there, we want to help them find their specialty. Our Junior Coordinators understand the marketing funnel and will do almost everything, from email to marketing analytics to web copy.

    Does the RED Academy curriculum match up with what you’re looking for in a new Junior Coordinator?

    One of the reasons that we love the RED course is that their graduates are learning the “full stack.” They won’t be amazing at any one thing, but they’ll know how to do it all, and can dive into client work right away. Our specialty at Digital Hot Sauce is in analytics, PPC, paid social, traffic, and conversion, and SEO. So the Full Stack Marketer bootcamp aligns well.

    RED Academy is continuing to get better and tougher, and the newer grads are coming out with even better experience than some of the early graduates. It's great to see the school on a growth trajectory.

    Did you ever have to convince your partners at Digital Hot Sauce (or even yourself) to start hiring from a bootcamp?

    We're always looking for good people, so I was willing to look at all the options. At the same time, my time is valuable, so I did my research to make sure that RED Academy wasn’t just graduating people with certifications that didn’t mean anything.

    There's a huge gap in our market right now. There are quite a few specialized, senior digital marketers, and a lot of entry-level people, but there’s a high demand for everyone in between. I think RED Academy is helping close that gap and will continue to get better at giving students more practical experience, more time in the tools, and raising the bar for graduation. My sense is that, compared to some of the other bootcamps, RED has a very big vision for what they're building and enhancing their product.

    What are the differences that you've noticed between a RED Academy graduate versus a more traditional college grad?

    Some RED Academy grads are changing their careers; others have worked in marketing but want to build up their digital skills. The biggest upside is that RED Academy grads have their certifications from Google, Facebook, etc. They've spent time using the tools, whereas a four-year university degree without a practicum is typically theoretical. College grads feel like they've actually used those tools, but they've never really done it.

    I would take the practical experience, that I think RED provides, over that conceptual learning. RED students are also immersed specifically in digital marketing for those 12 to 24 weeks, whereas a four-year, more elongated marketing program is more general. I like that RED grads have a specific target and are ready to jump in. They are still junior level practitioners, but you know that they have a great foundation.

    When you go to a Hiring Day at RED Academy, how do you choose which students to hire?

    Practical experience is the biggest hurdle to get into the digital marketing industry; it's hard to get a company to take a risk on you. We don't typically hire recent grads right out of university, but I just hired two recent college grads who had also been to RED Academy, so they had this practical experience. They also had really strong community experience and aligned with us culturally.

    The beauty of working with RED is that the students work with a “community partner” for their practical experience. They engage with a business in the community and work on a project for that business. As an employer, we’re able to actually talk with that community partner and ask about their experience with a RED student, and get feedback on how they did in the project, etc. For example, one of our recent hires, Shannon, was a recent college grad and didn't have much marketing experience, but we could still get insight into her capacity for learning, which was an advantage.

    Do RED Academy grads go through the same interview process as a traditional applicant?

    The RED certificate definitely works to an applicant’s advantage, and so does a recommendation from instructors who know them and think they’re a good fit. We take that recommendation seriously, but they still go through our entire hiring process.

    Our hiring process consists of a questionnaire, a phone interview, in-person interviews for competency and culture, and then a final meeting with me. They might also need to do a project if there are still questions about the candidate.

    You mentioned that you’ve sent current employees to skill up at RED Academy also. Which course?

    The part-time Digital Marketing Foundation course is really the only one that works for us – we’re in growth mode as a company and can't afford to have somebody take three months off.

    Why do you think it’s important to invest in your current employees and help them continue to learn?

    Our employees want to master their skills and want to get better and continue to grow. Typically, digital marketers love learning. Learning keeps a digital marketer engaged, so we’ve made education part of an employee’s bonus or incentive plan. It’s interesting to see them take on a whole new level of confidence.

    One specific example: One of our employees came on as a Coordinator, but she felt like she needed more confidence in a number of areas that we didn’t have time to teach her internally. Attending RED Academy was actually her idea, and it was a transformative process. She really drilled into analytics and absolutely loved it. She even brought back some insights into our team.

    That's amazing – a large investment for an employer to make in an employee, but you can obviously see value in that investment.

    Yeah, it is a big cost, but there’s a grant in Vancouver that covers a portion of tuition and we cover the rest, or make it part of an employee’s compensation.

    Are you able to give feedback to the RED Academy team?

    Their team has really valued feedback and they seem to take it to heart.

    I think that RED Academy should continue to add more and more specialized classes, because I think there's huge opportunity for both the company and students. Say we want to launch a new service offering and nobody in-house knows how to do it, but they have the hunger to learn. We’re really eager for RED to be able to accommodate that.

    What's your advice to other employers who are thinking about hiring from a bootcamp?

    There's an opportunity to build a long-term relationship with a bootcamp. We've really drilled into building a strong relationship with RED Academy, so we get a bit more priority. Anytime a new cohort is graduating, their community manager reaches out to ask if we’re hiring and narrows down a couple of grads that would fit in at Digital Hot Sauce.

    We obviously believe in RED’s program, but you want to be careful about which bootcamp you're syncing up with, the quality of the course, and the level of grads they are putting out. There are a lot of money-grab courses out there, both online and in-person.

    My other advice for employers is to recognize that at any bootcamp, there will be a spectrum of expertise. In my naivety, I originally thought that RED grads would be a little bit more qualified than they are in reality. There's only so much that a student can learn before they start getting real practical experience, working on tons of different projects, and being mentored. Understand who you’re hiring.

  • Meet Two Winners of the RED Academy Impact Scholarship

    Canadian tech school RED Academy’s mission is to give opportunities to creators to help them make a meaningful impact on the world. We were excited to find out that RED Academy offers Impact Scholarships to make these opportunities available to even more people. We spoke to two scholarship winners, UI Design student Jane Li, and Web Development student Amelia Garvin, to find out why they are switching careers and how the scholarship is helping them get there. Find out their scholarship stories, which courses are eligible, how to apply, and how much the scholarships are worth.

    RED Academy has campuses in Vancouver and Toronto, Canada and London, UK offering 12 and 24-week courses in full-stack Web Development, UX/UI Design, Digital Marketing, and Web & App Development. RED Academy has allocated CAD 15,000 towards helping more people impact their own lives and the lives of others through tech education.

    We spoke to Jane Li, a full-time UI Design student in Toronto, and Amelia Garvin, a full-time Web Development student in Vancouver, to hear about their plans to pass on their knowledge to others when they graduate.

    Q&A

    What were you up to before RED Academy and why did you decide to attend?

    Jane: I ended my long-term position as a 2D artist and animator in March, and was freelancing here and there after receiving my bachelor’s degree in animation from Sheridan College. I wanted to have a better portfolio and to understand more about design in general. I had a friend who attended RED Academy, and she loved her experience. She recommended that I attend their sampler UI Design class. That class was such an eye-opening experience that it made me want to attend the immersive UI Designer Professional program.  

    Amelia: Before I decided to attend RED Academy, I worked full-time as an art teacher and freelance graphic designer, illustrator, and visual artist in Vancouver, Canada. My career in the arts followed a Fine arts degree from Emily Carr University where I focused my time trying to learn how to build something in as many different ways as possible. I experimented with mediums from metal-working to Adobe suite and graduated with a lot of tools in my creative toolbox. I decided to enroll in RED Academy’s Web Developer Professional program to add more tools to my box to launch a career in tech. I came to RED to challenge myself and learn something completely new. My goal is to blend my knowledge of art and design, my teaching background, and my new found skills to help others transition into a junior developer role.

    How did the Impact Scholarship make it possible to attend RED Academy?

    Jane: To be honest, even though I really wanted to attend RED Academy, I felt a bit wary after looking at the tuition fee. I heard about the scholarship during the sampler class, which was three days before the deadline. I went for the scholarship not just for the discount but also to see if I was the right fit for this program or not. So I stayed up late and submitted a little animated video that I felt best represented me as a designer. I was really thrilled that I got the scholarship because it solidified my decision to enroll at RED.

    Amelia: The Impact Scholarship from RED Academy enabled me to focus on pursuing a new career path as it relieved some of the financial stress that comes with the price of education. I was very excited to learn that RED Academy offered this financial aid, and was even more excited to have won the award.

    RED asked us to answer the question; “How would you use your education to make an impact in your life and the lives of others?” I used my answer as an opportunity to clearly envision how I wanted to shape my future with my education. I wrote that I would use my education to help others find a path into tech by becoming a future mentor, a teacher, and a resource for others looking to transition into the exciting world of tech. As I move through the bootcamp, I keep this vision in mind to keep me motivated and focused throughout the semester.

    How is RED Academy helping you to become a UI Designer and Web Developer? Does the teaching style match your learning style so far?

    Jane: I really like how RED Academy incorporates current technology and updates its lessons accordingly. I think it’s very important for UI Designers to stay up-to-date with industry trends at all times because technology is constantly changing. I also like that I get to work with real clients to build my portfolio. As a creative thinker, I learn through trial and error and RED has exercises for each class so I can learn the concept through application.

    Amelia: The reason why web development is so exciting is that it allows you to take someone’s idea and bring them to life. RED Academy is teaching me the skills to make that happen. Although a bit intimidating at first, the hands-on projects and exercises facilitated by the instructors allowed me to quickly dive into the inner workings of my computer! It is a lot to chew on, but the small class sizes, dedicated staff and open layout of the facilities make learning fun, interactive and invigorating. Nested inside the curriculum at RED is an emphasis on soft skills such as networking tips, communication, and career guidance. For example, every Monday morning is dedicated to what is called ‘RED Town Hall’ where all members of the current cohort participate in group activities that encourage members of different classes to meet and mingle. The structured social events are key to developing strong relationships and seeing all the amazing things that other people are learning!

    The most significant part of the learning experience at RED is the final project, aptly named ‘the community project’ as the students pair up with businesses in the city to help them build a working WordPress website. The students work in teams from within their area of study as well as working with the clients, designers, and digital marketers.

    What’s your advice to someone considering RED Academy or another coding bootcamp?

    Jane: My advice is to do research and understand what you are going into before fully committing to it. Attend a sampler class, talk to people who went through the experience, and see how they feel about it.

    Amelia: The best advice that I can offer is to do research on the institution that you are going to attend. Go to their social events, meet alumni, and get acquainted with their facilities so that you can really get a sense of whether it will be a good fit for you. More often than not, these will take the form of introductory courses, workshops, and networking opportunities facilitated by the school for potential new students. In the end, it is the people at the school who will work with you to redefine your skill set so it is best to see if your values align. A hot tip for anyone considering doing a bootcamp is to do as much self-learning as you can before you start your course. Luckily, there are a lot of online resources to get started and play around with code!

    The benefit of coding bootcamp programs is that you are surrounded by like-minded people that can really propel your learning. That being said, it is a short program, so revisiting concepts on a continual basis is necessary in order to retain all the new information. Make a schedule, stick to it, find a coding buddy and get used to the idea that your evenings and weekends for the next couple months should be dedicated to learning!

    What are your plans after graduating from RED Academy?

    Jane: My plan is to continue perfecting my portfolio so that I can get a job as a designer at a design agency or a tech company.

    Amelia: Upon graduation, I would like to become involved in teaching code and getting a junior developer position in a company that can help me grow as a developer in Vancouver. Ideally, I would like to create a career that can bridge my art and design knowledge with my new technical background. I am looking forward to what the future holds.

    Q&A

    Nicolas Peckham’s career was scattered until he found UX Design: from video production in Los Angeles to photography in Hawaii, phlebotomy in Salt Lake City, to the oil industry in North Dakota. He wanted to get into tech so he taught himself JavaScript, but it didn’t stick. When his friend pointed out that intensive technology schools like RED Academy teach design as well as coding, Nicolas jumped at the opportunity. See why Nicolas enrolled at RED Academy’s UX Design program in Toronto and how he landed a Product Designer role at Rokk3r Labs.

    What is your background before RED Academy?

    It’s been a pretty winding road! Out of high school, I worked in TV and film production, then digital media marketing and advertising in Los Angeles and San Diego, and learned some visual graphics design and Photoshop along the way. I then worked as a photographer, videographer, and editor in Hawaii.

    I felt I wasn’t developing intellectually so I took some general education and EMT community college courses in Sacramento. It was great to actually use my brain. I worked as an EMT for 3 months, then moved to Salt Lake City, Utah where I got back into video production with professional sports teams. After a year, I went back to school, started a job in phlebotomy while simultaneously continuing to produce video content. I then moved to North Dakota to work with a friend in the oil industry as a Health Safety and Environment (HSE) Manager for a year. Finally, I moved to Sweden and started studying programming online with Treehouse and Codecademy.

    What motivated you to start to learn programming on your own?

    I had friends in computer science courses at Berkeley and UCLA and I could see how their career was opening up for them – there were a lot of job opportunities. I’ve always been a tech savvy person and interested in how things work and operate. I thought it would be cool to learn how to build a program. I started learning with the potential goal of becoming a developer, but after a month my dedication started to fade away. I moved to West Palm Beach, Florida for a year and worked at a restaurant while still freelancing in video production.

    When I spend too much time away from doing something mentally stimulating I get a little restless. I reached out to my network to find a new role and got offered a role in North Dakota as a Data Analyst for Hess. During this time, a coworker and I created a physical mechanism that helped truck drivers identify power lines on rural dirt roads called DakotaFox.

    What made you want to start learning UX Design in at an immersive technology school? Tell us about your research process.

    Throughout all of my careers, the one thing I really loved was directing videos. I was staring at a page of JavaScript and realized that I really hated it. There’s a part of me that really wants to learn to code because it’s challenging, but coding is really not for me.

    Coding was something I liked to do as a hobby, not a career. When I was in Utah, a friend was going to DevMountain. I saw that they had UX Design courses and I really didn’t know much about the field. After I did more research, I realized that UX Design was the skill I wanted to learn. DevMountain seemed pretty cool and convenient – I was accepted, but 10 days before the course started they needed to push back the start date by two months.

    How did you decide to attend RED Academy?

    After that experience, I came across RED Academy online. I was traveling in Rome when I had my interview and I felt good about the conversation. I did consider DESIGNATION because they focused strictly on design, but I was looking for something less expensive since I had been traveling over the year. The US to Canadian conversion rate for RED Academy was great because I could save a lot of money. I was also really excited to move to Toronto, a place I had never been. So I just went for it and that’s how I ended up at RED Academy.

    What was the application and interview process like for you?

    It actually happened pretty quickly. When I called RED Academy I had five days before the early bird registration deadline. I had an interview with the lead UX/UI Instructor and received my acceptance. I started the course January 5th and finished on March 31st.

    How many people were in your cohort? Was your class diverse?

    There were 17 people total and half were women. We had people from animation, copywriting, defense, industrial design, graphic design, film production, and programming. Many people came with diverse career backgrounds.  

    Could you share a typical day at RED Academy? How was student life?

    I typically arrived at 8:30am. At 9:15am, we would have a two-hour lesson on a topic like how to conduct user research or the purpose of rapid prototyping. We would then have lunch followed by a continuation of the morning’s lesson or some kind of creative collaborative project, like a design sprint or partner project work. A lot of times we would have to present our design sprint at the end of each day. We also worked on our community projects on specific days – where you get to work with real clients from RED’s community. We had our morning session with instructors and then in the afternoon, there was an open format to work on our projects. If we needed help we could ask our instructors or other classmates.

    Student life included Friday socials, town halls, and teamwork. (#REDFAM) I feel pretty fortunate to have been in my cohort. The friendships that were formed were definitely one of the best takeaways from my time at RED. The individuals I met challenged me quite a bit to learn design on a deeper level. I feel that we all really supported each other emotionally and mentally. Having certain people in my cohort kept me motivated and on-track. They also made my experience that much more enjoyable.

    What Real Client Projects did you work on?

    In the UX Designer Professional you work on three client projects, I created a responsive website design and cross-browser compatibility for TheBrewBox.co. A two-sided platform was designed for B2B operations and I collaborated with an industrial designer to create their new product packaging.

    I also created a design for a new mobile app for MoveSnap.com. We used rapid prototyping and usability testing, which enabled me to validate my design choices. A new UI was designed to reflect updated branding and restructured and tested information architecture using card sorts.

    Lastly, we looked at the optimization of an existing product, using analytics for Lendified.com. I redesigned desktop and mobile-specific experiences, restructured top and bottom navigation for optimal task completion and optimized the site for load speeds, search rankings, conversions, and acquisitions.

    Did the RED Academy teaching style benefit your learning style?

    Our full-time instructor definitely helped me in my journey of design exploration. He was a really smart guy and a big picture thinker. He could question my questions to make me think harder. He was also really into technology and design in general, like me, so it was great to speak to him and be excited about things that we would see outside of class.

    What tools did you learn at RED Academy to be a designer?

    Learning the methodologies of design was one of my most favorite parts of the course. We learned about rapid prototyping, user research, storyboarding, task analysis, information architecture, and human-centered design.

    Prior to going to RED Academy, when I was founding my company DakotaFox, we used a lot of these methodologies without knowing what they were called. We were doing iterative design processes but had no idea that we were doing it naturally. Now I can put a name to those processes.

    RED Academy pushed the importance of empathy pretty heavily. I think one the greatest skills that a designer can possess is empathy. It’s hard for some people to be empathetic with design because they want it to be their way, rather than the client’s way. It’s hard to accept criticism when building products for other people. What I benefited from most at RED Academy is learning how to build and design for others.

    How was your job search after RED Academy? Did your Portfolio help you with the search?

    Because I was a U.S. citizen in Toronto, I didn’t have a work visa. RED Academy was supportive, but couldn’t sponsor a visa. I did get help with my resume and with the job search from my instructor.

    Without the real client projects I worked on at RED contributing to my portfolio, I don’t think I would have been in a position to apply for any type of design job. After the cohort, I really felt like my portfolio was solid enough to start applying for positions. Disclaimer: It’s not unrealistic to search for a job for 3+ months. Start preparing for that.

    Do you have any tips for those on the job search looking for design roles?

    There are a lot of myths about making your resume only one page and amazingly designed etc. I was applying to a lot of places with no responses so I decided to completely redesign my website to focus more on the process of my design and my thinking. That was key, emphasizing the way I thought about design and the process I follow. I also found a website called VisualCV where you use pre-made templates that help in getting past ATS (applicant tracking systems). After I did those two things, I started getting callbacks. Obviously, your resume and website have to be good, but timing matters. It took a long time to hear back from different companies, but I eventually landed a Product Designer role at Rokk3r Labs.

    There were a lot of times I felt discouraged. I would think “I’m not going to get hired as a designer because I’m too junior” or “no one really cares that I graduated from a bootcamp.” I then realized it’s not about your education, it’s about how you present yourself with your resume and portfolio. It’s about your process and how you think about design. That’s what separates you from a general graphic designer and someone who truly understands design thinking.

    What advice do you have for people thinking about learning design at an intensive technology school?

    Don’t rely on the school or the instructors to teach you everything. Make sure to fully immerse yourself by learning from your classmates, and every additional resource you have while not in school (youtube etc). You have three months to grow as much as possible, so it’s worthwhile to fully commit yourself mentally and emotionally.
