Devmountain is a coding bootcamp that offers short, full-time in-person and online programs in Web Development, Software Quality Assurance (QA), Cybersecurity, and User Experience (UX) Design. The programs are designed to prepare students for entry-level positions in the tech industry. There is a Devmountain campus in Lehi, Utah for those who want to participate in-person. Devmountain's immersive courses require 40 hours of class per week, and 10-20 hours of work outside of the classroom. The part-time programs require 11 hours of class per week, and 10-20 hours of work outside of the classroom. The school was started in 2013 in Provo, Utah.

The Web Development track covers front-end and back-end engineering (JavaScript, HTML/CSS, AJAX, Axios, React, Bootstrap, Node.js, Express, and PostgreSQL). The User Experience course covers prototyping, visual/motion design, Figma, UX research, and  wireframing. Devmountain instructors are all coding industry professionals and aim to bring real-world applications into the classroom.

Devmountain is beginner-friendly and no experience is necessary to apply. The first step to applying for Devmountain bootcamp is to check out the courses and start dates. Once the student has picked a course, they must submit an online application. Next, students speak with a member of the admissions team by phone to further discuss the program. After the phone call, students must complete a challenge to ensure the program is a good fit. Finally, the admissions team will notify students if they qualify for acceptance.

    Challenging and fun

I had a lot of fun learning and exploring new topics about code and java that I had no idea existed. Foundations was a blast, the intro to coding curriculum was really well thought out with how each of the lectures and labs were laid out as well as the weekly tests. It challenged everything I knew about code previously while expanding on everything we learned through out the week. The capstone was the pinnacle of foundations with how much it challenged our knowledge to building something from scratch all on our own. Overall it was a ton of fun. Specs was also really enjoyable however less enjoyable than foundations. I still learned a lot from the weekly projects we had but I have a few complaints about how it was laid out. The projects weren't any challenge it was very thoroughly laid out for you and made the projects seem very simple because of how it was basically put together for you. I would have really liked a weekly test or a morning challenge to help me better understand the course material. Because of how the specs curriculum was laid out I had a lot of trouble with my capstone project compared to my foundations one. But overall the specs curriculum was fun I still learned a lot from the projects and how certain things are meant to be set up in the back end. One last note, front end sucks :p.

    Web Dev Specs

DevMountain provided me with an immersive and comprehensive web development bootcamp experience that significantly accelerated my journey into the tech industry. The curriculum was well-structured, covering a broad range of topics from front-end to back-end development, ensuring I gained a holistic understanding of web technologies. The hands-on projects were particularly valuable, allowing me to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios. These projects not only enhanced my coding skills but also provided a portfolio that showcased my abilities to potential employers.

The instructors at DevMountain were knowledgeable and approachable. They were not only experts in their fields but also genuinely committed to helping students succeed. The support I received during challenging coding sessions and the insightful feedback on my projects played a crucial role in my learning journey.

One of the standout aspects of DevMountain was its focus on practical, industry-relevant skills. The bootcamp provided an environment that mirrored the collaborative nature of professional development teams. This not only prepared me for the dynamics of a real workplace but also honed my teamwork and communication skills.

DevMountain's job assistance program was instrumental in my post-graduation success. The career services, resume workshops, and networking events provided invaluable insights into the job market. Thanks to the strong emphasis on building a professional network, I secured a position shortly after completing the bootcamp.

Overall, my experience at DevMountain was transformative. The bootcamp not only equipped me with the technical skills necessary for web development but also instilled in me the confidence to tackle complex challenges in the ever-evolving tech industry. I highly recommend DevMountain to anyone seeking a fast-paced and impactful web development education.

    Great Bootcamp!

I can honestly say that I have learned and feel ready to work as a software developer.  I am grateful for the team at DevMountain.  I welcome the curriculum to learn the first half in JavaScript and focus on your specialization the second half.

    A New Life Path

After spending over 8 years in traditional college classes, I struggled to find a work-life that I truly enjoyed.  After being referred to Devmountain by a friend of mine, I was able to see that the career and lifestyle it supported aligned with my personal goals in a big way!  I'm so glad I found this cohort, and was blown away by the friends, and faculty I met.

It was an intense experience but probably one of the most rewarding and self fulfilling things I've ever done in my life.

It was an awesome experience that helped lay the foundation for my new future. The instructor, Marohn Howard fostered a safe place for learning and community during the course which was mirrored by the rest of the faculty both during and after graduation. I could tell that they really wanted me to succeed and I felt supported the entire way. My only regret is that I wish I had done this years ago...!

    Outdated Material but Instructors Helped

Foundations material was great and gained valuable experience there.  In the iOS Specialty Section the material hadn't been updated in 4-6 years.  Anyone who knows how Apple and their tech advances knows that's horrible.  It was hard to follow along with videos when the functions they are using and the buttons they are clicking down exist anymore or were moved.
As I was graduating they were updating the material after several instructors quit over it and everyone I came in contact with complained to them.  The material they updated to is current yes, BUT, it is watered down.  The material, as I saw them updating it to, does not prepare you to enter the workforce as an iOS Developer.  For that reason I would recommend a different bootcamp until Devmountain goes over that material several more times. (I graduated May 2023).

But as I said, the instructors, job seeking assistants, and everyone I talked to in the Devmountain staff was incredibly helpful and nice.

    Intimating but fun

I should've started this years ago. I started off super scared and intimidated and ended up completing the courses feeling comfortable and confident. It was definitely hard and stressful but the teachers were all so supportive and helpful and tried to make it fun. I enjoyed my time here very much and would happily recommend these courses to anyone I meet.

Justin—This is such an important review and reflection of your experience committing to and completing a coding bootcamp. We cannot thank you enough for sharing this and hope it inspires others to follow in your footsteps. There is indeed a lot that seems intimidating about these programs and many students feel overwhelmed, both in the first week and at various points during the bootcamp. There are so many things to learn and everyone learns differently. Yet with persistence and the support of our education staff—which you so kindly pointed out!—we find that students surprise themselves by what they are capable of achieving. We wish you all the best in the next steps of your coding journey and career goals and hope you'll stay in touch with us directly or on our social channels.

Accessibility in terms of pricing and curriculum are two cornerstones of our bootcamps, yet we also aim to teach a range of skills to help graduates pursue an entry-level career. You are exactly right about learning being a lifelong endeavor, and that's especially true for tech professionals. Good communications, problem-solving ability, collaboration—these are all characteristics that can be developed in bootcamp and contribute to lifelong learning. We hope you continue to build on your foundations and grow in your career.

    Don't Consider Devmountain Cybersecurity

I think Devmoutain could be great for people who want to go into a programming-related field, but I want to go into Cybersecurity and their model does not fit that very well. Entry-level Cybersecurity jobs are looking for a lot of network/IT knowledge/experience. Foundations (the first 8-weeks) is focused on programming so it doesn't help much at all with entry-level jobs (Devmountain argues that knowledge will help with career advancement but I can't advance a career I don't have so I feel a bootcamp should be focused on helping get an entry-level job). Then when you get to specs (specializations) you're pretty much learning from online videos on Udemy. The video series I found most applicable to the knowledge needed for an entry-level job in my desired field is normally $300 which is far less than Devmountain fees. If you're wanting to go into Cybersecurity specifically, I don't think you should consider Devmountain.

We appreciate your thoughtfulness in crafting this review about our Cybersecurity program. And thank you for attending a Devmountain bootcamp! It is true, we emphasize our Foundations portion to better equip students with a deeper tech stack as they pursue a career in tech. While the Specialization portion does deploy a different learning structure, we aim to provide ongoing access to instructional staff and continued accountability measures alongside the career support of our Outcomes team to help learners and graduates navigate the job market. All that said, we greatly appreciate feedback like yours to help us continually improve and further fine-tune our curricula, instruction, or overall experience and hope that time and persistence have aided in your job search. Java Student

My experience with the first half of the course was great.  The instructors were knowledgeable and they fostered a collaborative environment despite the fact that some students were remote and others attended the class in person.  However, if you decide to pursue a DevMountain Bootcamp education, please speak with multiple former students about their experience.  Many graduates have DevMountain on their LinkedIn profile and would be happy to chat with any prospective students (at least, i imagine they would).

Now, once you enroll in this program your mileage will vary depending on a number of factors including...

    • Your previous software development background
    • The quality of your instructors - his/her teaching style and experience
    • Your chosen specialty - (specs as they are called)
    • The quality of your SME, his/her teaching style and experience
    • The experience of your classmates (both tech experience and non-tech experience)

In my opinion, this explains how the experience of students can come across as wildly different depending on which review you read about the DevMountain experience (i.e. "it was awesome" vs. "it sucked").

Is the class worth almost $10,000.00?  Absolutely not!!  But DevMountain is a business, first and foremost.  DevMountain will charge what they believe the market will bear.  That is an irrefutable fact.

Can you learn this material on your own? Absolutely.  However, what DevMountain offers (in the first eight weeks) is an opportunity to learn in a collaborative environment along side other students with similar goals.  At least, that was my experience.

The last eight weeks is a PluralSight license that will/will not be enhanced by the following factors.

    • You have a great tech lead (e.g. experienced, smart, personable)
    • You have a great SME.  I imagine they exist at DevMountain, but this was not my experience.  As you can imagine these folks are VERY difficult to recruit.

    OR

    • Your tech lead is inexperienced.  He/she is a recent Dev-mountain graduate and inexperienced.  Perhaps he/she attended some training on the "DevMountain instruction philosophy.
    • Your SME is marginal

Just note, that a significant portion of the DevMountain experience will be outside of your control.  What you will bring to the equation is a passion for learning about the tech AND your individual life experiences (do not discount them for they are important).  What DevMoutain will bring to the experience will vary.

And, to be perfectly honest, the tech field is very competitive.  It will be difficult to succeed unless you commit to a consistent amount of studying each day - whether you attend a boot camp or not.  Tech changes too fast to solely rely on what you learned a year ago and many tech companies have very unrealistic expectations of job-seekers.  So be ready!!

Fair warning - I'm going to address the DevMoutain "marketing" spin (response) to this review in advance, based on other feedback I have read in prior reviews.

    1. Videos are not "over a decade old"- most have been created in the last 1-2 years."   Please do not respond to any further feedback about the out-of-date PluralSight videos until you take some time and do the research. The assertion you make is ridiculous.  Two-year-old videos ARE decades old in the tech world and one-year-old videos are questionable.  Please learn more about our industry and the speed at which it moves if you want to be a player in the Tech Boot-camp business.
    2. "Our Specializations tracks are more than a subscription to Pluralsight. While there are videos that are accessible within Pluralsight as part of each specialization, there are also lab exercises, presented tutorial-style (created for Specializations by Devmountain curriculum authors)".  Again, another statement which misses the mark.  The quality of these lab exercises is directly proportional to the experience of the person creating the exercises.  In my experience (in specs), the same tech lead that "taught the material" was the one who created to content.  Good tech lead -> Good content.  Mediocre tech lead -> mediocre content.
    3. Please re-read (and I'm making an assumption that you critically read them at all) Jake Peralta's, Katie DeMet's Latina in Tech's and all the anonymous reviews about their collective negative DevMountain experience.  These aren't one-off examples of how the program could improve.

In summary, there are some positive aspects of DevMountain but the glaring weakness specs.  The value proposition simply isn't there.  Don't get defensive about it. Critically read the review feedback, avoid the bulls@@# spin and fix it.

    Better Bootcamps Out There

Overall, this program does not foster an inclusive environment. Very few people of color in my cohort. There are bootcamps out there better geared to support people of color and women pursuing engineering. Staff does very little to address concerns regarding toxic environment, inappropriate behavior, discriminatory remarks, made towards women, women of color, and people of color. Lots of bro-grammers in my cohort. A big deal is made about keeping your camera on. Sometimes women and people don't like to be ogled, so we keep the camera off. Many unpleasant experiences and very little sense of community for people of color.

The structure of the program is 16 weeks split into two 8-week sessions. First session is foundations where students learn basics of programming by using javascript. The second session is about your specializations. The iOS spec's material is very outdated and not applicable to xcodes environment as a lot of it has been deprecated. The iOS staff was diverse in background and great to work with/learn from. Students don't learn data structures and algorithms in this program.  In-person and remote students work together in the first 8-week session (Foundations) and class is scheduled to meet every day. The second 8-week session (Specs) is asynchronous. Students work alone and watch videos on that day's material. Again, the material was outdated and was difficult to get through.

    Complete and utter garbage.

Honestly, just trust me on this, do. not. waste. your. time.  The curriculum they also send over to you, is, well, not real. They don't teach any of it, in the order they claim.  TLDR, the syllabus/course material before you sign-up is baloney.  The entire specialization course is 100% self-study in which you use Udemy, and Pluralsight resources. Pluralsight costs $299 for the year while you're paying $9900 for the course.

Let's ignore the fact that they don't advertise any of this on their documentation, wait, I can't ignore it, they completely hide the fact that they leverage material you can get for $500 max and then use that as their curriculum. Let's do some math.

$500 in Pluralsight/Udemy courses, 1 hour of private tutoring from someone that works at FAANG on codementor.io a week, at $50 an hour, for 29 weeks(part-time course) is $1,450 + $500 = $2000.

There you go, just saved you $7,000. Don't make the same mistake I did
