UCR Extension Boot Camps

This Bootcamp was great. As many of the other reviews say on here. This is very hard work. You need to make time outside of class in order to be sucessful in this class. But if you can, You'll be a web developer in no time. The structor they have is very helpful in pushing you to keep moving forward. The TA's they picked were amazing and very helpful. The Student Sucess Manager is amazing and actually helps you. If you have any problems he will sit down with you and talk it out. I would recommend this place to anyone that really wants to become a web developer.

The Bootcamp is an enlightening experience, there will be tough days. In the beginning the course will be overwhelmingly, hard and frustrating, but stick with it you will learn alot. It was a wonderful course! I really appreciate the way that they introduce lessons, the homework assignments are all really helpful, and the projects that we do in this course really prep you for job interviews when they ask you to show what you have worked on. The TAs are the true stars of the show! I have even found the career services really wonderful. It is a lot of hard work, you will be learning many things on your own. However, it is a great way to shift fields (like I am doing) and learn a great breadth of skills.

Even though I had prior experience with coding, it was difficult for me to move forward in a career in web development with my skill set. I signed up for the Coding Boot Camp to improve on my existing skills in addition to learning new ones.

The Coding Boot Camp at the UCR Extension was challenging at times due to the fast-paced nature of the course as well as the breadth of topics covered in the class. Although the class is 10 hours per week, I spent more than that amount of time working on the homework assignments, re-doing activities, and reading about the topic. However, the best aspect of the Coding Boot Camp was the group projects: it fostered a better bond between my teammates and myself as well as pushed us out of our comfort level to complete the project competently and on-time.

I believe that my experience at the Coding Boot Camp would not have gone as well as it did without the instructors and TAs. Joe Tanksley, the instructor for the cohort I was in, was very knowledgable about the topics he taught and communicated them effectively. The TAs, Hans and Sean, were very helpful and graded the assignments in a timely manner with useful feedback.

In addition to the course curriculum, there were optional Career Services assignments. I found these useful in getting a better understanding for writing a brand statement and resume, creating a portfolio website, and preparing for interviews. Along with meeting with the career director, I feel better prepared for finding a job in the tech industry.

Overall, the Coding Boot Camp was a great experience that I highly recommend to learn about programming in web development, developing relationships with your cohorts, and building fantastic websites.

I first heard about a Coding Bootcamp from my cousin who also took a similar bootcamp, but in Seattle, and hers was a year program compared to the 24 week course I took.  I had no clue what coding was until she told me about what she did, and it peaked my interest. I started looking for schools local to me and found the one at the UCR extension.  The course is no joke, it was an instense 24 weeks, in which I spent not only 10 hours in class, but also 40-50 hours of studying.  Studying as in watching videos, redoing activities and a lot of reading.  In the end, it was worth learning the world of coding.  Along with the homework, we weren't required to use career services, but they did help with writing resumes, brand statements, and interviewing.  They do NOT help you find a job, but they do help you become employer competitive.  I enjoyed the instructor and TAs that I had.  They were very highly qualified and  knowledgeble in both front end and back end web developement.  Overall, I had a good experience learning about coding.

The Coding bootcamp at UCR extension is an excellent course to take for entering the tech industry. It is an intensive course with excellent instructors and TAs. Like any other course, it requires a great deal of studying outside of class. Class is three times a week, twice in the evening and once on Saturday in the mid-morning. It is designed to be taken in addition to working full-time, though I would not recommend balancing full-time employment with this class, since it requires a lot of work. Expect to spend twenty hours a week outside of class studying and working on technically challenging homework and projects. I found it to be an excellent supplement to my bachelor's degree. I would not recommend taking this class as a replacement of a bachelor's degree, though it is certainly possible to get into the tech industry solely with this certificate. Most software development jobs require a bachelor's in addition to the skills learned in this course, but there are certainly opportunities for those without a degree. One of the greatest aspects of this course is the three group projects throughout the entirety of the course. Make sure to put in a lot of effort when working on these projects, as this is what employers will be judging you on. After working hard with your group for three projects, you bond strongly and grow very fond of each other. Also, it is important that a prospective student knows that the job assistance aspect of this course is entirely online. This discouraged a lot of students from scheduling appointments with the career director but don't miss the chance to have someone assist you in your job search after the program. The career director that I worked with did an excellent job at helping me with things from resume and cover letter refinement to interview follow up emails and many other small yet crucial parts. She was also genuinely interested in my job search and she helped make the entire process run more smoothly. Overall, I highly recommend taking this course if you are genuinely interested in web development and programming. Read less

Before going into this course I had no knowledge of code. This course along with the instructor, Joe Tanksley, and both TA's Sean Roshan & Hans Tang took me from being a zero to hero. It did not come over night and did take a lot of hours studying, but most of all not giving up.

By the end of the course I gained the skills needed to land a job building websites. The career support team is super helpful, there to assist you on your way by creating an employer competitve resume, building a portfolio, as well as job placement.

Overall, this bootcamp was a great experience both for building relationships with your cohorts and being able to create phenomenal sites.

The Boot Camp at UCR is very well done. This program offers current technology, and ensures that students are prepaired for jobs. The instructor was a well seasoned professional. He was able to share important insights about careers as Front and Backend Web Developers. His name was Joe Tanksley. The TEA's, which supported our class, were well versed in front and backend web design. They provided great support during excercises. They were Sean and Hans. 

This course is not easy. It takes a greatdeal of work and preperation, but it is well worth it. This program also offers a very good career placement service. This propgram does a good job of helping attendees with resume and brand devlopement. Overall, this is a great program and well worth the investment.

When I enrolled in this program, my biggest concern was whether I had what it takes to learn the skills that this class was teaching. Learning cybersecurity felt like a huge task; could I pull it off? Could I handle the deficit of time while working full-time and taking on the challenges of a bootcamp? Turns out, not just myself, but also my classmates had what it takes, and so do you. This program will offer every imaginable resource, from competent tutors to outstanding instructors and teaching assistants.  It's not easy and does require you to focus on the course work while also making time to study and practice the material. 
The class is definitely worth it. Despite the challenges, the skills and knowledge you will gain in cybersecurity, along with the exceptional support from tutors and instructors, make this program a valuable investment in your future. So, embrace the journey, put in the effort and know the rewards will be well worth the hard work. You've got what it takes to succeed! Read less

The course was really educational. I have background experience in Software Development, but not in the security point of view.
I learned how easy it can be to attack other people's networks and getting root access with just a simple script of
python -c 'import os; os.system("/bin/bash")'

I learned new techniques like forensic analysis with Autopsy, how to use metasploit and thanks to our professor (Prof.  McDermott) I was introduced into the toys attackers use (in my case the wifi pineapple);

This course teaches you on the latest technologies like cloud infrastructure, which currently is one of the top paying jobs. Not only do we learn some penetrating techniques but we also learn about the blue team (Defending) this includes how to write reports, track how attackers got in via (Splunk. ELK) and learn about mitigation steps.


The bootcamp is great as long as you spend time to learn what they teach you, not just copy what they're teaching. If you can run the scripts you'll always be a script kiddie, but if you understand what it happening that's when you start becoming a cyber security professional.

This training is great! Yes it’s a bootcamp and there are days where you struggle but it wouldn’t be a bootcamp if you didn’t struggle. My experience with the Instructors and TA was outstanding. They were there to help you through tough days and took the time needed to fully explain everything. I never left a class not feeling confident of what I learned (Thanks to Instructor and TAs willing to go beyond to help you learn, absorb, apply, guide, etc with whatever you are feeling not confident with) I’d say, don’t hesitate to take this course if you’re trying to enter the Cyber Security world. Attended the Full Stack Development course at UC Riverside and had a great overall experience. It wasn't easy but the instructors, assistants, faulty and student success managers were amazing and sincerely made their goal to help the entire class succeed. Although, Covid put a major stress on the class and everyone involved. The staff made every effort to ensure that we were getting the most guidance and support throughout the six months. The initial few weeks were tough as everyone was getting used to life on lockdown and the course going from the expected physical attendance on campus to a virtual Zoom session. During that time I felt overwhelmed and not sure if I had made the right choice. Despite my fears and lack of confidence with the curriculum and speed of the course the instructors did an amazing job of keeping me engaged and on track. I feel like they truly cared about not just my progress in class and my understanding of the course but also my well-being as well as all of the other students in the class. The student success manager and my weekly tutor was amazing and truly couldn't have completed the course without them. They really took my experience over the top and pushed me to stick with it even when I thought about quitting. I owe a lot to them and know that any student who has the opportunity to work with them will succeed if they too put in the effort. The course is tough and there is a tremendous amount of class work, home work and studying but if you are focused, dedicated and open to new ideas then anyone can succeed, especially with the help of everyone involved with the course. Since I have graduated the experience is still awesome! I am now working with my post graduation career manager and she couldn't be more amazing so far and I feel extremely confidant that the choice I made about 8 months ago to attend the course was the right one for me and my future. 

The amount of tools and information that are available to every student during class and now after is invaluable if you take advantage of it. They give their students everything they need to succeed for both in class and after you graduate. I would recommend this course, UCR and Trinity to anyone looking to better themselves and improve their options in the search for employment and a promising new career.  Read less

My overall experience was great! The challenges presented to our class helped us to believe in our ability to learn, adapt to, and achieve. I have already promoted and got one of my friends signed up for the next class because I felt so good about the outcome. The instructors are very knowledgeable being that they are still involved in the industry, and they are also invested in making sure you understand the curriculum that is being taught. The choice in going to a coding bootcamp was the best choice I could make in order to better my future. I was first scared to take this path mainly because this is my first time working with code; but with the support of the staff AND your classmates the road doesn't seem that scary. If you ever feel like you're struggling you always have access to tutoring, which I found it really helpful. My personal opinion, but I feel that it's worth taking the course if you either want a new path to a better career or to just better your skills. The opportunity is there. Read less

I would strongly recommend the cybersecurity bootcamp to anyone. The bootcamp greatly improved my current skills and introduced me to applications, skills, and terminology I was never aware of (but needed). After completing the curriculum not only was I more apt, but it helped bring my understanding and expectations within the cybersecurity industry much closer to reality. It helped me decide what job role I would focus on in cybersecurity and the instructor provided a lot of much-needed direction. First off, this course was great!  On my first day I was really nervous not really knowing what to expect or if I was smart enough to be in the class.  After my first day I knew I made the right decision to join the class.  The instructors were very knowledgeable and were really all about you and your understanding of the material and success in the class.  I learned way more than I thought I would.  The material I learned in the class really accelerated my learning curve about Cybersecurity.  I recommend this course to anyone.  Whether you're just starting out, or are a current IT professional in the field.  This course is designed for everyone.  Read less

This program is very intense from the beginning of the first night. I did not have any coding experience when I started but I will say that after 6 short months I can build a static website from scratch and even a small app with a front and back-end. The best advice I can give someone who is looking to sign-up for this program is to do your research first and make sure you understand what it is about before you commit. Also, know that you will need to put in a lot of hours outside the class the learn the material.

I had been wanting to join a coding bootcamp, researched a few and decided to attend the Coding BootCamp at UCR - Full Stack Web Developer.  The program delivers as promised, I had a great experience and learned a lot. The course is fast paced and it helps if you come in at least knowing the basics of JavaScript; definetely complete the pre-work module prior to starting the course as this is what helped me a lot. The instructor was great, very knowledgeable and with real world experience. The Teaching assistants were also great and supported us every step of the way. Doing the assigned projects gave me real world experience of what is expected of good web developers. I'm happy I took on this challenge and completed the bootcamp succesfully.

Enrolling in the coding bootcamp at UCR was the best decision I could have made for myself. While the course is rigorous and fast-paced, Joe(instructor) & Hans & Sean(T.A.'s) were extremely helpful and patient.

You can expect to spend about 20+ hours on homework, depending on the difficulty and your level of comfort with the material. Projects were a blast to work on and you get to meet a lot of great people.

If you decide to join this field, I would highly suggest the coding bootcamp at UCR. This course has allowed me to make a better life for myself and my family. I will be forever thankful for the knowledge I've gained.
