Save your money and use the free resources online

This coding bootcamp really is only useful and doable if you have already had some degree of coding in your background before. That is to say that I was part of the november cohort and the program heavily emphasizes that you can learn to code with zero experience. During the first few weeks while going through HTML and CSS, it is extremely easy, they spend a lot of time and resources trying to teach you to build and style webpages. After that it goes downhill. At the point that you actuall...

Hi Anonymous, thank you for taking the time to leave us your review, we really appreciate you sharing your personal feedback. We regret your experience did not meet your expectations. Our course is designed to benefit individuals across a wide range of proficiency levels, ranging from those who may have more experience to novice self-starters. As you mentioned, the boot camp model is rigorous and fast-paced, and we cover a great deal of knowledge in a limited amount of time. We do our best to communicate to students that because we cover a full-stack, topics are introduced at a higher level in-class, after which students are expected to dive in and not only gain a deeper understanding of the concepts but practice their skills outside of the classroom. This helps students learn how to problem-solve and self-teach, key strengths in a developer role. While similar topics may be covered online, we pride ourselves on our reversed engineered curriculum developed using unique exercises and projects.

While the course is challenging, as the curriculum progresses, most students do feel more confident in the knowledge they have gained. There is also extensive support available along the way to assist students, as well as free supplemental resources. Because we understand that this is a difficult program, we do provide office hours and various other avenues for outside help including tutoring, in-person and virtual office hours, Slack, email, and phone. Were you able to benefit from these resources? By having one instructor and two TAs per class, we try to provide a low student to instructor ratio to make sure students feel properly guided. Our team is constantly working on improving our instructional support to ensure students have the best learning experience possible, so we appreciate your insight on the matter.

Our program has an intensive vetting process and requires a minimum of three years’ experience in the tech field. Instructors may come from a variety of backgrounds within the web development field and will often have different teaching styles, as such we understand not all students will have the same exact experience. We are constantly striving to improve the classroom experience through a variety of practices including weekly student feedback forms, video audits of the classroom, and instructor coaching sessions. The November cohort you participated in expressed overall positive sentiments regarding your instructor's improved ability to connect with students and properly relay course material. We found your instructor continually encouraged your class throughout the entire program duration and was also able to convey supplemental learning tools and resources. We hope you were able to find this instructional improvement to be beneficial. The in-classroom experience aims at equally equipping all students and cohorts to obtain the best learning experience possible, so we truly value your insight. We deeply care about the quality and integrity of our program, as well as each and every single one of our students.

It's our goal for all students to leave the program feeling confident in their skills, so we would welcome the opportunity to speak with you and determine what additional assistance we can provide at this time. Please reach out to me directly at (312) 416-9979 so we can further address your concerns and any questions you may have.

Good for a new skills, but not a new job

I attended one of the first of Trilogy's cohorts at Northwestern Coding Boot Camp. I have evaluated the course based on the criteria provided here.

Instructors: My primary instructor was nothing to write home about. He seemed to be a strong coder, but didn't have much of a knack for instruction. He'd often seem underprepared for lectures and make answers to students' questions more complicated than necessary. He was serviceable, but I would have preferred a more natural educator. T...

    Hi Anonymous,

We first want to congratulate you on your dedication to this rigorous program! We hope you’re proud of all of the hard work you put into completing this course, and all that you have accomplished with your skills. Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us, as we consider each review as an opportunity for improvement.

As you noted, Northwestern has partnered with Trilogy Education Services, a continuing education program manager that provides a proven and innovative curriculum across more than 25 top universities nationwide. This partnership allows our students to learn about the latest technologies in an environment that fosters lifelong learning. It is an evolving curriculum informed by employers in our network from across the country and market demands.

We appreciate you choosing our program for an accelerated environment in which to learn new web development skills. As you noted, we hire active practitioners with a minimum of three years experience in the field in lieu of formal professors to best simulate real-life working environments. We strive to provide strong and supportive guidance in our classes, and classes are recorded for quality assurance to ensure students are receiving the best learning experience possible. We understand that instructors and students are not always a perfect match, but we are glad to hear that your main instructor was efficient in teaching you new skills and that you especially enjoyed the other cohort's instructor. We love our staff and admire their passion for coding and teaching.

It's great to know that you found the program structure helpful. As this is a boot camp, our curriculum is fast-paced and designed to cover multiple concepts in a limited amount of time. We understand you would have liked to spend more time focusing on previously covered technologies like React rather than getting an introduction to Python. Our program prides itself on teaching students how to learn, giving students a strong foundation that they can use to then master other programming languages after graduation. Because of the market demand for this technology, our curriculum opts to provide students with a high-level overview of Python that they can use to continue learning it outside of class. However, we are constantly working on improving our curriculum to ensure students are learning the most valuable technologies—so we truly appreciate you sharing this feedback.

We regret to hear that our career support was not what you were hoping for. Our professional development services are built on the principle of empowerment. We know job seeking is difficult and strenuous, which is why we encourage students to submit a number of quality applications on a weekly basis; this increases the possibilities of securing a well-matched position and encourages professional networking. While we do not secure direct employment for our students, we empower them the best we can with the necessary tools and support for entering the job market, including resume support, portfolio reviews, 1:1 coaching, and technical interview training. Did you find these helpful? We sincerely appreciate your feedback regarding our career support and want you to know that we’re still here to assist you in whatever way we can. We’d love to hear from you directly to see what else we can do at this time to help you feel equipped for the job search and best meet your expectations. Please reach out to me at (312) 416-9979 to discuss how we can further prepare you for success.

Thank you again for taking the time to leave your review. We wish you nothing but the best in your future endeavors!

We really appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts with us. Feedback like this helps us learn how we can improve the boot camp student experience. We're sorry to hear that your time in our program did not provide you with the guidance and support you were looking for in a web development course.

In order to provide students with real-world insights into the web development industry, we hire active practitioners with a minimum of three years in the field in lieu of formal professors. However, because our instructors come from a variety of professional backgrounds, we know that they will often have different teaching styles and that not all instructors will fit the needs of every student. Our classes are recorded for quality assurance, and weekly feedback forms allow us to hear directly from students to make sure they are on pace and receiving a favorable teaching experience. From these surveys, we have observed that a large majority of students have been satisfied with their experiences in our programs.

As you note, this program is powered by Trilogy Education Services, a continuing education program manager that partners with over 30 top universities to deliver its proven programs. This partnership is noted on our website, and our admissions and instructional staff do try to make this collaboration clear. Because different individuals will require different levels of support, we do offer varying types of additional help depending on the student's feedback in order to make sure that each person is properly assisted.

We understand that you have shared your feedback and concerns throughout your time in the program, but please allow us another opportunity to speak with you to discuss any and all support that we might be able to provide you with at this time to help equip you for success. You may contact me directly at (312) 416-9979 at your convenience.

    Not a good program

I am feeling unprepared and utterly devastated by the education I received in this program. My instructor was extremely poor and I question the process in which they select who is best fit to be an educator for this course. I had several friends interested in taking part in the program and I have warned them to stay away from this particular bootcamp. Look up Trilogy.

We really appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback with us. Student feedback like yours helps us learn how we can best improve our program.

While our program has an intensive vetting process for instructors and requires a minimum of five years’ experience in the field, we continue to monitor instructors to ensure that students are getting the best learning experience possible. My experience

    Honest Review of the Bootcamp

I am shocked at how terrible this bootcamp has been. I am a little over 2/3 of the way through the course and it has been a disaster. I will be leaving this bootcamp not being confident in anything we have learned. The instructor was horrible and could not teach the topics properly, he would have days where he would be mad at us for not understanding what he is saying. A student dropped the course two months through the course which is very telling. Many of the students are in the same boa...

    Northwestern Coding Boot Camp Graduate

The Northwestern coding boot camp was great. I think, as with any course you take, a lot depends on your teacher. Our set of Instructor and TAs were excellent. They were genuinely interested in seeing each student succeed and were always helpful. They dedicated a lot of time after class hours to help students and gave up much of their free time to share their knowledge and experience in extra help sessions. They were always motivating students to do better and were themselves motivated to ...

    Honest Opinion of Bootcamp

I took this bootcamp with absolutely no coding background but an interest in the coding/ IT world.

I think you can be successful in this class if you are willing to put in the hours of time to keep up. The pace is FAST. This is a BOOTCAMP. You probably will not grasp every concept. If you hold on and do the work to keep up the best you can, you will have a wonderful experience and learn more than you ever thought possible in 6 months.
