Data Science for All / Colombia 3.0 (DS4A) was beyond any expectation. It's the result of mixing a solid curriculum of Data Science algorithms, approached with Python programming, uncovering patterns by means of exploratory analysis and data visualization and sophisticated machine learning methods. DS4A also teaches the right mindset for solving non-trivial problems while deeply understanding main ideas behind procedures. It is a particular experience, the level of the teachers, the lectures, the material, the interaction and how the course is constructed allows us to delve into fundamental technical aspects for the labor market but at the same time raises questions about the reality in which we spend. I participated in the contest between Correlation One and the Colombian government to learn the latest techniques in the area of data science. The contents of the course are excellent, the teachers who teach the program are the first level, and you have a lot of fun learning and practicing together with teachers and fellow students. Data Science for All/ Empowerment was my very first time learning how to code, and it was the best introduction for my start in the data science field. The curriculum is very difficult, and as a new coder the fast-paced teaching and 4 hours of lecture every week was a lot to get behind, but the fellows and their guest speakers keep you motivated! My teaching assistants were extremely helpful and were so willing to work with you if you could not make it to their weekly office hours. And, most importantly, the community that this program was able to create was unlike any other institution, program, or fellowship I have ever been a part of. Fellows just wanted to help and see you succeed whether that be connecting you with people in their network, sharing job opportunities or grants, or hopping on a Zoom call to help you with homework. I'm so happy that I was able to take part in this program. Overall, the instructors were very knowledgeable and professional. The subject matter was relevant and easily digestible, and the TAs were always willing to help you in your understanding of complex concepts.

I was hoping that the conclusion of this program would lead to job opportunities in operations analyst roles, but I was fortunate to land an interview at a big tech firm during the program. I've now been at the company for 3 months and my manager said that "[my] participation in this program directly contributed to [his] decision to hire me." It was an amazing experience. When I join CO I wasn't confident enough with my python skills. Now I can say it is my favorite data cleaning methodology. Their intensive program is challenging but worth it. Not only will you become a data expert, but also you will have exposure to working with amazing and smart people. The DS4A program was fantastic overall, the exposure to industry Data Scientists and academics was greatly rewarding. Having come into the program lacking confidence, the program helped to teach me that often we are far more capable than we know. Working alongside other graduates, data professionals and those trying to change careers allowed for the transfer of skills and opportunity to form professional relationships. Im going to give a quick breakdown of positives and negatives:

Positive: 

• Fantastic teachers
• Exposure to reputable companies and support for career development and job applications
• Working alongside the most diverse Data Science cohort
• Hands on learning with real world use cases
• Very well structured
• Great support

Negative/can be improved:

• The course focussed significantly on Data Analytics not allowing for enough time spent on Data Science topics
• The classes did not completely align with project work, we were sometimes taught topics after we were expected to submit project tasks which required that knowledge
• More structure for mentors to allow for more useful meetings.

This program was the best way to explore a field that I had been curious about. I had telling myself for years that I wanted to learn to code and had started by teaching myself but this program kick started my data science education into gear. 

The professor is quite possibly one of the best educators I've ever had. I'm convinced he could teach data science to a baby. The way he explains difficult concepts is in a way that anyone can understand. The DS4A staff are all open to questions and want to help you understand the material as well as complete your project strong. 

Data science has helped me think critically about how analyses are done and how data can be manipulated. It has made me a more analytical person with the tools that make me stand out amongst other people in my field. I'm very excited to use my new skills in my work now and into the future. I had decided to make a transition to IT and was pursuing a master's in Information Technology. However, I was more interested in my data science classes, and I was looking for something to give me much more depth than what I was getting from the university. This program is top notch! Taught by world class professors and professionals, the course covers key data science concepts while affording the opportunity to explore advanced concepts as well. As a recent fellow of this program, I was impressed most of all by the decimation of the staff and TAs in ensuring that we got the support we needed. Our mentors - from top companies and institutions - generously offered their time to offer guidance for our capstone project and career advise. All in all by the end of the program, I felt empowered to venture deeper into the data field, and confident to contribute my skills in a professional setting. Read less

If you are considering data analytics or data science as a possible career choice but don't know where to start to build or continue developing a skillset necessary for that career, Correlation One's Data Science For All programs are for you. In addition to providing participants with the real world cases to apply data analysis and science skills to, the program provides something just as valuable, a supportive and encouraging community of like minded individuals. Its hard to say which component of DS4A is so impactful, because all areas of the program were huge for me. If you are looking for a program to teach you skills, develop community, real world experience, and provides mentorship and career exploration tools, DS4All does just that. It is challenging, but challenging in such a way that you know that you are learning skills that are necessary. I can't promise that this program is easy, but it is definitely worth it! Read less

I'd like to begin by saying that first and foremost, the staff is dedicated to the cohort; this is extremely important because without this type of dedication, perhaps a program like this would not survive. Second, the program is absolutely free, which is mind blowing, albeit it does require an entrance exam, and is also diversity based, which is understandable for the nature of this program.

It is a course meant for non-technical students, so from an engineer's perspective it was not as theoretically challenging as I would have hoped, however, it is not to say I was not challeneged. They teach you a lot of the basics of Python, some statistical concepts, and many other python libraries like numpy, pandas, matplotlib, etc. that are invaluable to a data scientist; the course primarily focuses on understanding your data, analyzing your data, and understanding certain issues that exist within data that create issues when deep diving into a dataset. Quite a few of these things were challenging for me in their own respective way, and I've been able to get a realistic view into the life of a data scientist.

With that being said, the format of the class is case study based, with a few take home assignments that span a week or two to complete; there is also a final project that is done as a group (4-6 students), where the groups are selected based on a few factors including area of interests, and skillset - my group had a PM, I was the programmer, a junior engineer, and an analyst. We were very successful - as were the other groups - and all our projects were quite incredible. All in all, you have to put in the work... with almost everything in life it is a 'what you give is what you get', so you should fill in all the gaps and not blame the course because it gives you more than you could ask for.

We also received links to jobs, a virtual career fair, a mentor from industry (our mentor was the director of data science at Wayfair!) - just a whole bundle of perks that is too good too be true.

Lastly, our class was just awesome, my fellow colleagues were all bright, positive, intelligent people whom of which I was thoroughly impressed with, and just impressed with how much input everyone gave. For the first time in a long time (if not the first) I was in an academic environment where everyone was happy to be there and actually wanted to pitch in, and participate and get the most out of this program. As a current data science grad, I can attest to the strength of the program’s quality in teaching you how to think and apply the skills required to be an effective data analyst. I was also impressed by the guidance and support of everyone involved in the program.

Last August, I selected skills and areas I wanted to focus on during my last year of grad school - one of which was data analytics. Coincidentally, within the next week, I received a promotional email about a data science "Bootcamp" through Correlation One. The program hopes to provide more access to the data science field to folx from marginalized identities - creating Data Science for All (DS4A). I applied for the program the next day and was accepted into their very first cohort. After a long 15 weeks where I dedicated 9 hrs of my Saturdays, I finally graduated from the program a couple of days ago!

During DS4A / Empowerment, I learned data analytics through practical cases using real data sets and completing assignments. I also completed a team project where my group aggregated Department of Ed data on colleges and created a tool to help high school seniors make the best college decision for them. I am proud of all I learned: technical skills like Python, data concepts like A/B testing, and overall data literacy. Looking forward to using my new tools in my journey post-graduation. Read less

It is probably the selection process, complete with practical tests and incredibly competitive admissions (<6% for our cohort) that created such a great experience. Every other fellow there was passionate and brilliant, and the cohort was incredibly diverse both in terms of work experience, educational background, and life experience. Our team could not have been better, and I hope to continue working relationships in the future with the four other fellows that were assigned to our team.
The quality of instruction was the best I've ever had, and the engagement and encouragement has helped me better define my plans going forward. I am considering more education because of how wonderful this experience, led by professors from top universities, was. 
There are a lot of job opportunities for Fellows who are looking to change careers. Several people I know received good offers as a part of the program, even if they had little formal tech experience. The partner companies are very active in recruiting, and fellows have access to Q&A sessions and interactions with representatives from those companies. Despite not looking for a career change, I attended several of the sessions and learned a good amount about how different companies are structured and what they are doing in terms of both Data Science and Diversity and Inclusion initiatives.

I'd hire any one of the fellows I graduated with because I know how intensive both the training and the initial recruitment process were. I recommend this program to everyone I know, and plan to stay involved in the future. I would do it again if I could! Read less
