This class was very helpful for someone who had little to no exposure to data analysis or visualizations. You won't be an expert by any means - this stuff takes more repetition - and the course might have tried to pack too much into 8 weeks. But it laid a firm foundation for learning SQL and Tableau. I took the UX Bootcamp between July and August of 2023, and I felt I had a very enriching learning experience at the Vancouver campus. The UX educators, fellow classmates, and staff really made a big, positive impact on my journey to becoming a UX designer.
The bootcamp is quite the intense learning experience, and it can feel overwhelming at times. I feel that the in-person learning experience really helped alleviate these moments because I was able to work through challenges face-to-face with the educators and fellow design students. Additionally, being able to exchange learnings and experiences with students from the Development & Data Science added to the whole learning experience (and we get to share in the struggles and success in person).
For anyone who has a background in more traditional design disciplines (like Graphic Design or Industrial Design), this program is actually a great opportunity to up-skill and develop new work relevant to the field, and build confidence in your creative abilities as you transfer your skills into a new problem space (especially if it has been a while since you last sat through a class). The educators are very up-to-date with their skills and can deliver the knowledge vey well (plus tie it back to relevant work situations). Read less

 I recently completed a bootcamp, and I can confidently say it was a truly transformative and enriching experience. In just a few words, I would describe it as "great" and "educative." First and foremost, the quality of education I received during the bootcamp was exceptional. The instructors were not only knowledgeable but also passionate about the subjects they taught. They made complex concepts easy to understand, and their enthusiasm was contagious. This made the learning process enjoyable and engaging. Moreover, the practical aspect of the bootcamp was invaluable. I had the opportunity to apply what I learned through hands-on projects and real-world scenarios. I took this course to see if UX Design was something I could see myself doing as a career. Having zero tech experience at all, I was very overwhelmed by the information but persistent in getting as much as I could out of this experience. The teachers were key in making this happen. They were passionate about the material, empathetic to our challenges, and receptive to feedback when I needed a concept explained in a different way than what was being shown on the Powerpoint. I highly recommend an in-person class for the community building and group learning, and I am so appreciative that Brainstation sees the value in that and offers that option for most of their courses.
I think it would be beneficial for Brainstation to diversify the way they present their curriculum, which is why I gave that category 4 stars. The Powerpoint was fine in giving me the basic concepts, but I struggled to actually comprehend them- so much so that I finally asked the teacher to guide us through one of the activities, and found that far more helpful than anything we had done before. There are so many learning styles out there, and it would benefit Brainstation to offer their teachers various approaches for teaching the curriculum. Read less

I started in the cohort of June 2023- September 2023 and upon the first day of this program, my expectations of what it took to get into tech was eye-opening. Throughout the experience they continually reinforced how important it is to adopt a growth mindset. I saw many people join for a career change and for the most part we knew nothing of how the tech industry worked. The program picks up fast upon Week 3 and for the rest of the weeks onward it felt like a nonstop train of doing new projects and learning new skills. If you think you’ll be able to juggle doing outside work, THINK TWICE before signing up to this bootcamp because it does get heavy after a while. 

You will learn very valuable skills from this program if you’re able to stick with it. Just to give you a taste of what you learned is HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React (front-end) and Node.js, Express.js, MySQL (back-end). You’ll be essentially a full-stack developer and learn which areas you’ll like the most to specialize later on.

There were many times where I felt very uncomfortable, lost, and overwhelmed with the amount of work being thrown at you and expectations to deliver on a deadline. However, you have support from your teaching assistants to help if you get stuck, resources from the bootcamp curriculum via their portal called Synapse, and your peers. 

The biggest takeaway from this experience is to always be willing to ask for help if you need to and don’t suffer in silence. One way that the program facilitates this is through Slack, which you have the ability to connect with your fellow peers. You will get frustrated, you will want to quit, you’ll feel like an imposter but don’t let these feelings keep you from doing this experience because it is worth it. 

One phrase my teacher used to say is to “trust the process” and I think that if you keep the growth mindset in mind you’ll surprise yourself at what you can do.

I highly recommend doing this bootcamp just for the unique environment to develop yourself as a person and if you’re willing to learn new things. Read less

The staff is amazing from the hostess in the front to the experienced instructors.  I feel very confident with just the level I learned with Reinaldo.  Learning the design principles, what makes a good UX design, etc boosted my company's ability to scale into the future. After this course I realized that UX is one of the biggest parts in making a quality product or event.  I would most definitely recommend this course to everyone that wants to get into the field of UX. I had an amazing experience during my bootcamp in May. There were lots of ups and downs, but I managed to pass this course with no worries. Coming from fashion school, I was prepared for the level of intensity. I had to still do the things I loved doing outside of school to keep my sanity. Chris and Christina are top tier instructors, very knowledgeable and encouraging. Learning was fun and assignments weren't impossible, although they were very time consuming. This condenses years of studying into a quarter, which explains the workload. Annette is amazing with helping make ourselves hireable. She's super professional and good at what she does. This bootcamp is not for the faint of heart. You have to be tough mentally and lock in to the goal, which is earning a living to live the life you desire.  Read less

I just completed BrainStation's AI course and it was an incredible experience! Over the past 5 weeks, I learned about everything from the basics of AI to understanding machine learning and deep learning. The course also covered exploring generative AI and LLM's, prompt engineering, and a future with AI.

With all the hype and fear out there about AI, I feel much more equipped to engage in the important discussions going on with a balanced approach.

Additionally, I gained a greater understanding of how data is used in various models, which helped me to more effectively use and play around with the generative AI tools that are out there. In fact, AI was even used to help me revise and optimize this very post!

After completing the final project, I feel confident that I could propose the use of generative AI tools within the workplace.

Post Graduate Update: The BrainStation Bootcamp was intense. I liked the Google UX Course I took on Coursera, but nothing beats collaboration. At BSTN I got the chance to relearn UX concepts on a deeper level in a group setting with more critical feedback from instructors. We completed several documented design sprints and a hackathon. Additionally, my career coach at BSTN helped me identify my strengths, optimize my resume + Linkedin and held me accountable to consistently applying, giving new tips along the way. In the end, with persistence, some BSTN guidance, a stronger portfolio and a little luck, I landed a job that doubled my salary in a relative field.  Read less
