Layoffs at big tech companies continued to loom in the headlines — but are those layoffs actually affecting bootcamp graduates? We dive in! Plus, there was more movement around OPM regulation and a new Pell Grant bill for short-term programs, and 7 bootcamps new to the Course Report directory this February!

$22M FUNDRAISE + A $52M ACQUISITION

  • GeekWire reports that Coding Dojo was acquired by education services company Perdoceo for $52.8M this month. 
  • According to Betakit, Lighthouse Labs secured $21.2M in federal funding to go towards their ICT Boost project, which makes the bootcamp available to 1,700 Canadians at no cost. 
  • Indiana Wesleyan University announced that business entrepreneur John Qualls will now be the executive director of Eleven Fifty Academy
  • Alchemy Code Lab closed this February.

AFTER THE GREAT RESIGNATION

  • A new Cengage Group report focused on the career outcomes of those who left their jobs during 2021’s Great Resignation. 
  • Alaska became the fourth U.S. state to drop 4-year degree requirements from its state jobs, joining ranks with Pennsylvania, Utah, and Maryland. 
  • Tech Elevator alum Arwen Eger’s career change experience was highlighted in Technical.ly’s How I Got Here series

BOOTCAMPS FOCUSED ON APPRENTICESHIPS

  • Yahoo! reports that General Assembly has partnered with Interapt to launch a new apprenticeship solution for employers. In an interview with WorkShift, Lisa Lewin (CEO of General Assembly) says this new investment in apprenticeships may be the key to helping more women and people of color break into tech.
  • According to Technical.ly, Deeplocal announced they are sponsoring a 1-year apprenticeship program called Gizmology aimed at Pittsburgh’s Black and historically marginalized communities. Applications for the first cohort are due by March 13th!

TECH LAYOFFS: ARE THEY AFFECTING BOOTCAMPERS?

  • Vox published a deep dive into where tech workers actually work these days and if the current big tech layoff trend is reaching them.  
  • Springboard announced a pledge of $1M in scholarship funding for individuals impacted by tech layoffs. This Career Reboot Scholarship Program provides $1,000 towards Springboard’s Career Track programs like Software Engineering, UX Design, Cybersecurity, and more. 
  • Fortune points out that anyone working in cybersecurity has been somewhat immune to layoffs based on a recent study from (ISC)2. 

2 SCHOLARSHIPS PROMOTING DIVERSITY IN TECH

  • Perficient announced that its Bright Paths Program will sponsor 2 bootcamp cohorts in 2023.
  • With its new LifeBoat Program, BeachCoders Academy is focusing on upskilling students in rural America in order to bring economic inclusion to those areas. 

THE LATEST ON OPMs + PELL GRANTS

  • House Republicans introduced a new bill (the Promoting Employment and Lifelong Learning (PELL) Act) that would extend federal Pell Grant funding to skills-based education programs that were at least 8-weeks long.
  • Higher Ed Dive reported that the Department of Education is planning to review 2011 guidance that allows online program management companies (OPMs) to strike revenue-share agreements with colleges. The DoE may also vastly expand the definition of third-party servicers (TPS). 
  • As a response to a critical op-ed by Connecticut Rep. Rosa LeLauro, 2U’s CEO Chip Pauchek published an op-ed in Higher Ed Dive about why private companies are crucial to innovations in online education.
