Flatiron School

I has zero experience coding when I started Flatiron's bootcamp prep course -  their course is designed for beginners but is still challenging and pushes students to learn, not memorize patterns. Their lessons are clear and thorough, and give you all the tools and resources you need to be succesful as a student. If you get stuck on a problem they have a live chat support with more advanced students/instructors who can help or teach you how to debug your code - This system is by far the most helpful & responsive online community I have ever been a part of - never waited for more than 2 minutes and always got my questions answered in a constructive way - they don't just give you the answer, they teach you how to solve the problem so that you can debug similiar issues in the future on your own. PLUS there are people available 8am to midnight every day, which was amazing.

Overall, I found the Bootcamp Prep Coures Prep to be extremely helpful in learning the fundamentals of Javascript and Ruby. I felt the course was structured well, with the labs  building upon the knowledge earned from previous readings. I would strongly recommend it to anyone thinking of applying to the Immersive/Online courses.

I would also recommend it to anyone that is just trying to introduce themselves to the world of coding, as the prep starts from the absolute basics.

I will be joining Flatiron's software engineering immersive program in a couple months, and I'm very excited to be starting with them! While I only had a taste of the online prep course through their admissions process, the modules that I completed are all very well designed. The online platform/Learn IDE is intuitive and easy to use. Concepts are explained nicely, and support is readily available if needed. If you are thinking of applying, I encourage you to do so. Flatiron's admission process consists of a personal interview and a technical interview, both of which were fun and incredibly engaging! Based off the admissions process alone, it is clear that Flatiron places an emphasis on both a great curriculum and a great community.

While applying to several top bootcamps in New York, I quickly began preparing for the technical interviews. After going through the basic codecademy tracks, I fully immersed myself in Flatiron School's prep course which was what helped me ace all three of my technical interviews. After all, I decided to go with Flatiron School partly because of their awesome learning platform and the rigorous curriculum of their software engineer program.

I am a recent graduate of Flatiron School, and I am proof that it works. After 15 weeks of education and training without any previous experience, I landed a job (2 months post graduation) in which I feel comfortable and competent and able to contribute. Flatiron can't teach you EVERYTHING, and, thus, I still have much to learn about professionally coding, but they prepared me exactly as they said they would, and I have a job because of it. If you are dedicated and committed to learning, studying, falling, getting back up, and continuing to push yourself to learn this craft, you will do just fine, and while I know that the money can be preclusive for many people, they offer lots of scholarships and financing options that make it viable for almost anyone.

Flatiron, as an organzation, cares to the nth degree about their students' success and the promise they make to them about finding employment after graduation. They definitely push quality of instruction/curriculum over quantity of students cranked out and are thriving because of it. The curriculum is strong and ever evolving to keep up with the changes in the industry, and the programming fundamentals that you learn are top notch. I will be forever grateful for Avi, Adam, Joe, and the entire staff for helping me pivot my professional life and try something new.

I found the program to be really great. I think it fostered a great environment of a group of students all working very hard and helping one another in what made for a strong learning environment. Also the career coach was great. 
The only thing I would have preferred to be different was if they had taught full stack JavaScript instead of spending a lot of time on ruby/rails before getting to JavaScript for frontend.

Solid course to gauge multiple factors. Those would be course content, teaching style, personal ability, and interest in development.

The prep course gives you an outline as to what you would receive as an education from Flatiron. You get a chance to examine what the quality of the content would be and how it would be taught. You get to experiance real coding at your own pace. With the Learn IDE environment you don't need to spend hours setting up your own envoirnment, one is provided for you. It takes me longer to install ubuntu and get everything going on my own machine, but the Learn IDE was a simple install, instantly you are conected to Flatiron's servers where you code from.

Working on the prep course can help you gauge your own ability. Do I need to work on the basics a bit more? Is programming right for me? Do I even like this? All for free! During weekdays, if I had a question, communiy members or staff would respond on the sites built in chat usually within an hour or less!

My own recommnedation is to take a chance. You can always uninstall the IDE if you aren't interested. But you might find you like like the interactive environement, the interesting topic videos, and the nice online community that is provided.  The course really swayed the opionon on whether I wanted to do a bootcamp or not.

After taking the course, I chose to attend Flatiron. The application and interview process was pretty painless, Place info into webpage, and arrange for 2 skype interviews. One for personability, the other for technical ability. After investing so many hours in the prep course I was pretty confident during the interviews, that 1: I wanted to be there, 2: I could do the work. I haven't started yet, but am thrilled to be going.

Flatiron's Bootcamp Prep course gave students a comprehensive overview of the browser tools and Javascript. The labs were challenging but tightly connected to their corresponding lessons, which clearly explained topics for beginners. The best part about taking this (free!) course is the direct flow of communication between students and TAs. There's almost always (if not always) TAs online that address questions that students post in the chatroom. Fast response time, and if the issue isn't clearned out after some time, the TAs happily help you out over video chat. They've done such a great job creating a stimulating, supportive environment for us!

When I decided to attend a bootcamp, I had my heart set on Hack Reactor because I had read over and over that it was the Harvard of bootcamps. The thing about bootcamps like Hack Reactor is they have impressive job outcomes because they're extremely selective; they only accept students who could already get a great job without the program, e.g., PhDs, Ivy Leaguers, exceptional coders. In case you're reading this and can't decide on a school, I hope that steers you in the right direction.

Now on to my wonderful experience at Flatiron. I did the web immersive program and was able to finish in 5 1/2 months. I learned Ruby, Rails, JS, and React, which are extremely relevant today. The course material is very well written. It's not at all dry or tedious like other online classes tend to be. The lectures are very easy to watch and the instructors are very passionate about what they do, which comes across in their videos/chats. The other valuable thing you'll get from Flatiron is a comprehensive guide on how to make yourself marketable to potential employers. That comes in the form of course material and a career coach.

Don't expect the school to do all the work and find you a job. Like anything in life, you have to put the work in. Although, they do have recruiters connecting grads with hiring managers from startups to major companies. 

I accepted an offer about three months after I graduated. I'm currently a Software Engineer Apprentice with IBM. The team I work with uses Rails, which has been easy to transition into with what I learned at Flatiron.

I searched around the internet quite a bit and did several months of self-learning online and this was the best course I came across. What made it different from the others is the amount of live support. Not only are you connected to fellow coders going through the same thing as you, but there is a help chat which often led to one on one instruction no matter what time of day or day of the week. That was a game changer for me. I cannot recommend the bootcamp enough!

Flatiron's bootcamp prep course runs on an amazing platform. Questions will inevitably come up as you complete the labs but the support network is unrivaled. A Flatiron technical coach will respond to your question in a matter of seconds and they are often able to spend ~20 minutes with you via screen share to answer any questions. It's a great free resource to help prepare for bootcamp applications.

What I liked:

• Great community, and great support from the fellow students
• Frequent study groups, help sessions, gripe sessions.
• The material, for the most part, was very well taught. The material was difficult, but overall they did a very good job
• I got a $65K Full-Stack Developer Job within 3 weeks of graduating. Mission complete!
• Their classes (for the most part) are easy to navigate, easy to read and understand, and I am very grateful for all of the labs which really helped cement what they taught.

What I did not like:

• They don't tell you this in the beginning, but the course is designed solely for Mac users. They use gems, etc that DO NOT work on PC, without a lot of troubleshooting (no help from their staff). I even had an upper level staffmember tell me I needed to install IOS on my machine to continue.
• Their IDE software, which I was told was necessary, is full of bugs. Get ready for lost work, screen freezes, long load times, and failure to run.
• Their Website is also full of bugs; a suprising amount, for a course on web development.
• Their career support... the template they tell you to use for your resume is in Powerpoint format. Not Word, not PDF... Powerpoint. Their staff often cancelled after we were supposed to meet.
• Worst of all, they outsourced their technical interview to a company called "Skilled Inc", which is the WORST company I have ever had the pleasure of not working with. They're rude, disrespectful, messed up on their scheduling, blamed me, and ran off with their money. I hope Flatiron drops them like a brick.
• Especially later in the course, the material is less coherent, the support from staff is negligible, and they expect you to understand principles for the final portfolio project that they didn't cover in any of their coursework.
  
  Overall, I am SUPER happy and grateful for what they taught me, and that I was able to get a solid job shortly after graduating. We accomplished what I hoped we would. The job market is exceptional, and I am glad I decided to sign up with Flatiron. That being said, there were quite a few caveats that prevent me from whole-heartedly recommending the program.

I've looked at a few different coding bootcamps & tried out their introductory learning material, but I definitely wish I had started with Flatiron's. Their bootcamp prep course is an amazing place to start & really lays everything out in an easy to approach way. I would recommend it to anyone looking to get started in coding.

I found Flatiron school's prep work to be a comprehensive, easy to digest and streamlined experience. Even coming from a background of intermediate web development experience, the labs re-solidified many concepts and I even learned some fundamentals I had missed through my self-teaching efforts in the past! There's an integrated IDE so you're actually working in one of the most popular text editors and a very responsive community of other students/staff to help each other out if you get stuck on an exercise. I've been accepted to the upcoming November cohort but if the quality of the prep work is any indication of the course I'm confident it's going to be great. Highly recommend for those new to programming or even if you're just looking to freshen up on the basics.

Having never coded before starting my application process to Flatiron I was incredibly nervous to start and worried that I wouldn’t even get in.

I worked on the Free Online Bootcamp Prep Course from April-May 2017. I found it to be incredibly accessible and expertly written for someone like myself with little to no knowledge or experience.

I applied in early May and was amazingly accepted to the in-person immersive program in NYC from June-October 2017. Having recently graduated, I can strongly say that this was the best and most comprehensive and rewarding experience of my life. The friendship and support I found within those walls have left me confident and ready for the real world ahead of me in my new career.

I would recommend this opportunity to anyone whose passion for code is as strong as their will to become the best that they can be.

An excellent, constructive environment in which beginners can learn to code with the guidance they need, while developing the skills to continue their education on their own after the bootcamp is over. I haven't started looking for a job yet as I am taking some time to study independently before searching, but I am not worried the slightest. Flatiron prepared me well. Read less

Flatiron's online bootcamp prep course is a great way to get your feet wet with coding and see if it's for you. It also gives you a good idea of Flatiron's pedagogy and culture. The lessons are very well paced and engaging. Flatiron keeps it interesting with fresh challenges and a reassuring dose of humor throughout. I liked how the bootcamp prep course made use of the concept of "test-driven development", which provides instant feedback on your code and gives you a massive sense of accomplishment when you get the tests to pass. The IDE is also a great feature, since you'll be coding in a real coding environment on your computer and getting the feel for it. Also, the ability to ask for help from an instructor and/or fellow students at any time was really great. In sum, I really recommend it. And it's free! Read less
