I enrolled in the Johns Hopkins Applied Generative AI program through Great Learning with a fair amount of apprehension. I’m not a software developer. My work focuses on helping school districts strategically integrate AI into their existing systems, and while I had built simple AI assistants to help superintendents and principals work more efficiently, the idea of actually coding an AI agent felt intimidating.

To be candid, the first few modules were challenging. The instruction is excellent, and in hindsight the pacing was appropriate. At the time, however, it often felt like the instructors were driving 90 miles per hour while I was trying to keep up on foot. Fortunately, they repeatedly assured us that the concepts would start to connect—and they were absolutely right.

While I still wouldn’t describe myself as a "coder" in the traditional sense, I now have a much deeper understanding of how to use generative AI to create, modify, and troubleshoot code. The modules on workplace productivity and advanced generative AI workflows move quickly, but they build logically on the skills developed earlier in the program.

One area where I hoped for more was direct interaction with Johns Hopkins faculty. That said, the instructional content is comprehensive and well-designed. Great Learning provides outstanding operational and academic support throughout the program. Equally valuable was the learning community itself. My classmates brought diverse experiences and perspectives, and we supported one another through discussion forums and a very active WhatsApp group.

The program changed the way I think about my work. Since completing it, I have built an Early Warning Detector for a small school district, developed AI-powered email tools for superintendents, and expanded my ability to create practical AI solutions for educational leaders. As someone who is a bit older than many of my clients, I also appreciate being able to show them that learning these skills is absolutely possible. If I can do it, they can too.

The tuition initially felt like a significant investment. Looking back, it delivered substantial value through both the skills I gained and the confidence I developed. I would highly recommend this program to professionals who want to move beyond simply using AI tools and learn how to build meaningful AI-powered solutions.

This is a review of the John's Hopkins University course on Applied Generative AI offered by Great Learning. This is a great course for gaining exposure to the latest developments in the rapidly evolving field of Gen AI. The course covers a good mix of topics and code examples to help grasp the concepts in a self-paced curriculum which is very suitable for working professionals. The material on Agentic AI and RAG are particulary noteworthy in this regard. The instructors were amazing and well versed with the subject and provided insightful suggestions beyond the course material. The weekly mentored learning sessions were awesome. Finally, special kudos to the Great Learning staff and our WhatsApp group office manager (Surbhi) for a well managed course that kept us on track with timely messages informing of class schedules and submission deadlines for quizzes and projects. I really appreciate the prompt responses and guidance to questions despite a significant time zone difference.

The Certificate Program in Applied Generative AI by Johns Hopkins University was both dynamic and comprehensive. The program combined informative lectures, hands-on exercises, real-world projects, and practical applications to create relevant training in generative AI. As a 63-year-old retiree, I initially enrolled in the Johns Hopkins Applied Generative AI program (via Great Learning) out of pure curiosity. I wanted to explore the world of artificial intelligence and discover practical applications that could enrich my retirement years, whether through new personal hobbies or potential business ventures. Going into the program, I knew absolutely nothing about Python coding, which made the technical side of the curriculum seem a bit daunting at first.

I am thrilled to say that the structure of this course is absolutely fantastic. It is thoughtfully designed to give plenty of breathing room for busy or unpredictable schedules, allowing you to absorb the material smoothly. The curriculum flows nicely from Python basics into advanced, real-world applications. The hands-on coding approach and expert support completely demystified the programming side, and I can proudly say I feel very comfortable with Python now.

What truly sets this program apart, however, is its exceptional support system. During the term, I faced a couple of unexpected health issues that temporarily impeded my progress. The care and flexibility shown by the team were incredible. In particular, Surbhi from the support team was a tremendous help with my situation—offering the exact guidance and accommodation I needed to stay on track.

I am incredibly satisfied with what I have built so far, and I look forward with great excitement to proceeding with the agentic part of the course next. If you want to move past simple slideshows and learn to build real, modern AI applications, this program is worth every penny—no matter your age or starting background.

Even with little to no prior programming experience, this 16-week course bridges the gap between AI Theory and real-world application. The curriculum is highly practical where you will learn how to code in Python, gain a foundational understanding of how Large Language Models are trained, generate effective prompts to yield high quality results, use scoring methodologies to evaluate AI outputs and leverage Large Language Models to chunk and summarize large data sets.

I am impressed by how well this class has been organized: a well-managed combination of prerecorded lectures, mentoring sessions, and attentive online support. The professors have outstanding credentials and are well-informed.  The videos were well-produced, and professors were available on weekends to clear up any outstanding questions. However, what made this course different from other online courses was the Great Learning support staff.  They were highly attentive and remained in constant contact to remind us about deadlines, classes, schedule changes, etc. Even though I was taking a generative AI course, I nonetheless appreciated being able to communicate with human beings on administrative matters.
As a longtime IT professional, it’s been clear to me for the last few decades that higher education institutions must change how they operate or go the way of newspapers and shopping centers. When academic content can travel through a wire at little or no cost, then the question is not whether universities will evolve but how.
