Happy Fall! AI was all everyone wanted to talk about this September, and rather than reading more doomsday headlines, we saw more nuanced (and longer!) articles on how AI integration will actually improve and create more jobs. We saw two tech training programs receive sizable gifts from MacKenzie Scott’s charitable foundation, and a new coding bootcamp merger in south Florida. We’ll let you know how the respected (and free) tech training provider, Per Scholas, is expanding its footprint. $25M FUNDRAISE + 1 NEW ACQUISITION

  • CodePath received a gift of $15 million from Yield Giving, which is the charitable foundation of MacKenzie Scott. Yield Giving also gifted $5 million to SkillUp.
  • South Florida-based coding bootcamps, 4Geeks Academy and Boca Code are merging!
  • VET TEC is now funded again! If you are a veteran with just one hour of GI Bill benefits left, you can attend a bootcamp for free with a living stipend! 

HOW AI IS CHANGING TECH WORK

  • Fast Company spoke to Course Report and several bootcamps like BrainStation, Flatiron School, Code Fellows, and General Assembly about how they’re pivoting toward teaching AI.
  • On TechRadar, Pluralsight CEO Aaron Skonnard pointed out the importance of teaching Gen Z digital skills now as they join the tech workforce.
  • Zeb Larsen wrote a piece for Wired about how developers will only get more important with the rise of generative AI.
  • Tech Brew spoke with Booz Allen Hamilton’s VP of Artificial Intelligence, Joe Rohner about their evolving hiring practices when it comes to expanding AI roles on their teams.

EXPANDING FREE TECH TRAINING INITIATIVES

  • WorkShift highlighted how Per Scholas is rolling out upskilling programs for its alumni, designed to help them keep moving up in their second and third jobs. 
  • Paul Fain interviewed Plinio Ayala, President and CEO of Per Scholas, about partnering with other workforce programs as it looks to reach more learners, and cites partnerships with ActivateWork in Denver and Goodwill Industries as examples of effective, powerful community partnerships.
  • IBM announced it’s committed to training 2 million people in generative AI skills over the next three years through its IBM Skills Build program. 
  • The Nevada Dept. of Employment Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) has partnered with Coursera to launch its free, online job training program, LearnNV. 

NEW CODING BOOTCAMPS & COURSES

  • LunarTech launched its Data Science Bootcamp.
  • Springboard announced its new Machine Learning Engineering & AI Bootcamp for its university partners. 
  • ThriveDX partnered with the University of Costa Rica to offer a Cybersecurity Impact Bootcamp.
  • Upright Education partnered with Bryant University to offer new online tech bootcamps.
  • The Nigeria-based coding school, Conclase Academy launched a new DevOps course. 
  • In South Africa, The Red Academy announced a new partnership with private, public and non-governmental stakeholders to offer a cohort aimed at training young people.
  • In collaboration with Code Institute, Coleg Gwent, a new tech bootcamp in Wales, just opened its doors. 
  • Code Fellows has partnered with JobReady by LearningMate to provide a new tech training program for K-12 and adult learners.
