This February, we saw more buzz about skills-based hiring and AI literacy initiatives through private and public organizations. A technical course provider landed over $6 million in a Series A fundraise this month, and Pell Grants for short-term programs continued to be discussed in the U.S. House of Representatives. $6.4M IN CODING BOOTCAMP FUNDRAISES

  • Certificate course provider, Ziplines Education raised $6.4 million in Series A funding to expand its team and university partnerships.
  • The career accelerator platform, Podium Education acquired Untapped, the career talent platform, for an undisclosed amount.
  • Congrats to Portland, Oregon-based coding bootcamp, The Tech Academy, which celebrates its 10-year anniversary this month!

THE LATEST ON PELL GRANTS FOR SHORT-TERM PROGRAMS

  • According to the National Institute for Civil Discourse, Pell Grants for short-term programs (also called Workforce Pell in recent bills) continues to have bipartisan support.
  • Politico reports that a bipartisan deal for the short-term Pell Grant bill will be taken up in the House at the end of February. 

THE CONTINUED RISE OF AI LITERACY

  • A new study from Indeed shows that employees with generative AI skills see a 50% salary increase!

  • Skillsoft announced it will be integrating more generative AI capabilities into Codecademy to help learners with comprehension, practice and apply skills 

SKILLS-BASED HIRING INITIATIVES

  • Massachusetts announced it is dropping its degree requirements from many state government jobs. 
  • Gothamist covered a NYC job training program run by the nonprofit Stacks+Joules that prepares learners for clean energy and green tech roles.
  • HR Dive reports that Walmart is updating its Live Better U education program to include more short certificate programs focusing on in-demand skills, such as data science, software engineering, and product management. 
  • Dice highlighted the rising need for technologists to “preskill,” as in acquiring soft and technical skills before they’re required in the workforce.
  • In the UK, WorldTimeTodays reports that the government continues to fully fund tuition to 16-week, digital skills bootcamps for its citizens. 

1 NEW BOOTCAMP + 1 NEW COURSE

  • Actress Malinda Williams is launching a coding bootcamp, the E.S.T.E.A.M. Project for women at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The bootcamp is accepting applications through March 31, 2024!
  • CodeOp announced its new Data Analytics Bootcamp.
