Amazing Experience

I attended and just recently graduated from the Tech Academy. I was able to work a full time job AND keep up with the coursework by opting for the part-time local student option. Even with my somewhat limited knowledge of coding, what they proved is all it takes is the drive to learn, to succeed.
The idea of their program is to really get you into the mind of a developer. You will be challenged, you will get slightly frustrated, but ultimately, you will learn. The instructors here are there to help you when stuck, but encourage you to keep trying.
The best part of the course to me was the Live Project, where you simulate being part of a scrum team, and Aja made it fun, challenging and very rewarding.
All in all, I cannot recommend this school enough if you are looking to break into the industry as a developer. What you learn is current, powerful and definitely worth your time.

I attended the Tech Academy. I now have a job. This is good.
The instructors are excellent. They create a very realxed environment and are always happy to help or just chat when your brain needs a break. Aja is an incredible live project manager. I owe Aaron the world for all his help getting me a job. The coursework improved significantly during my time as a student, especially with the addition of the new C# course.
The school is a very afforable place to learn at your own pace and meet a lot of great friends and contacts.
Also, I saw the new billboard on the building and almost paid to go to the school again. Whoever made it is super good at making billboards.

I had an excellent experience at The Tech Academy, from enrollment through graduation. The Tech Academy's software development program was exactly what I was looking for - self-paced and a comprehensive curriculum for full stack development.
I was able to begin the program the day after my enrollment and I was able to spend as much time as I needed in each part of the curriculum and I was able to spend less time on the languages that came easier to me. The instructors were always extremely helpful. Whenever I was learning remotely I could call up until 9:00 at night and an instructor would help me with complex solutions to a software program objective ( and sometimes even a computer issue ).
I would highly recommend to anyone seeking a quality education in software development to check out The Tech Academy. I researched several local and even national programs and The Tech Academy really impressed me and they never let me down. I wouldn't change a thing!

The Tech Academy gained my attention through online searching and reviews. I hope to return my experience so others starting their search can use my experience in their decision.
I have an over-time job, full-time family, and part-time college; so I enrolled in the online boot camp. This allowed me the flex needed in my schedule. I was allocated adequate time to complete each course topic. Topics helped to reinforce lessons learned during parts of my computer science degree. The biggest difference between CS classes and The Tech Academy is the Tech Academy took the learning out of a mundane classroom style environment and put me into a functional job oriented program. It felt like I was learning for an occupation! I was provided plenty of help when I became "stuck" in problems, and yes you will too. The course is challenging.
The Tech Academy topped off the course with a real project. You cant that from a general CS degree. This was a work-related experience that can be used in your search for a job. Going beyond relative learning; Tech Academy provided training interviews and help in job placement. The Tech Academy was one of the main reasons I was able to stand out in the hiring process of the AF Cyber Command. Definitely relative training and experience.

I went into this bootcamp having had some experience with coding in the past and with a grasp of some of the concepts and thought processes requisite for coding. I found that the beginning of the course, taught by Erik Gross, was engaging, easy to follow and interesting (I was... engrossed... if you will). Much of the middle of the course is videos made by someone else at the Tech Academy which were also informative and helpful, but didn't carry quite the same quality.
When the curriculum moves to C# and ASP.NET, you are forwarded to a video series at DevU.com, which you could easily purchase yourself for $80 or so. During the curriculum--learning the different languages--I don't think the value is in the material itself, it is in the support and the environment. When you get stuck or have a question, there is someone to ask about it, be it another student if you are studying locally, or one of the instructors (of which I think there are plenty and they're all nice, smart and approachable). There are a ton of tutorials online to teach you what you want to know, what you're paying for here is support and accountability.
When you finish the curriculum, you go into two weeks of the Live Project. This part, I thought, was really cool. It is essentially an internship in which you are working on a product in a team with a project manager. You will take little chunks of work and do them in a real-world-ish environment. When you get stuck, you need to fix it--either by asking for help from the team or working through it. At no point do you feel left out on a limb, but you will get experience working through things on your own.
Finally, you enter the Job Placement section in which you watch a selection of kind of redundant and common sense videos (though they are probably not common sense for many of the less socially inclined students which is why I think they are included). You will read advice on creating a resume and cover letter. After you do that, you'll receive copy/pasted advice on refining them. You'll get added to a mailing list and you'll receive dozens of emails per day containing job listings, some (but few) of which are relevant. The value in this step that I could find is the mock interviews. The placement Director is great at taking you through what to expect at an interview (in fact there are weekly roundtables throughout your time there in which you can do both softskills interviews and technical interviews: I recommend attending all of them).
In all, I think it's a good experience and worth the money. If I suddenly found myself in the owners' shoes, here's what I would change:
First, the in-house curriculum is rife with little errors. None of which affect the students' understanding of concepts at the end of the day, but they're distracting and they sap the students' confidence in the program.
Second, I would overhaul the job placement program which felt very under-resourced to me. The Job Placement Director clearly knows what he's doing, but I think his plate is too full to offer the kind of hands-on attention that would be a true value. Looking for a job is, for many people, completely demoralizing, and if you had a weekly meeting in which you discussed which specific jobs you're targeting and how you're building your skills, etc, I think it would feel less lonely and less daunting. If the daily emails students received each had a short preamble specifying which of the listed jobs are good jobs to apply for, I think the emails would feel less like a jumble of wires to be untangled and more like a helpful starting point.
Finally, I think the transfer between the curriculum and the live project, and the live project and the job placement section could be smoother. When I finished the curriculum on a Monday, I was told that the live project was on hold for the week and to come back in a week. When I finished the live project, it took me a week and a half or so to get feedback on my resume and get started in earnest with the job placement. This was a little frustrating when I was burning $750 a week or so while jobless. I think the student care dept should be looking ahead at when a student is ready to finish a section and make sure that he or she will be ready to make a smooth transition and have expectations clearly communicated.
All in all, this place is filled with great people and this was a positive experience for me, and I know this place is getting better constantly. If you're thinking of starting a new career in coding, this is a good place to do it.

Hi Travis! Thank you for the comprehensive and insightful review. You make a number of valid points in here, all of which we have since taken care of:
1. A few months ago the C# and MVC Courses were both made fully original and are a massive upgrade to the prior content. In fact, at this point our entire curriculum is original Tech Academy Content.
2. The Job Placement Course has now also been made fully original and contains all of the best and most successful actions taken by our graduates to get jobs.
3. The curriculum has been overhauled for typographical errors and has been fully rectified.
4. The transfer between curriculum to live project has been fully rectified. The solution taken correlates to the suggestion you made.
As you mentioned and as you can tell, we are constantly upgrading our curriculum to make it the best experience possible. Thank you for the feedback, and best of luck in your career!

I started the Tech Academy with a certain level of understanding in HTML and CSS. I left fully confident in my abilities, and with a new job as a web developer. The courses are designed to drive you towards being a full stack developer, teaching the proper ways to work in this field. Even if the job you get doesn't use the languages taught, the methods that you learned will apply, and you'll be able to pick up anything that much faster.

My overall opinion:
If you are a self-motivated individual who is willing to put in the time and effort, this is an excellent program that gives the foundational knowledge and job search support to enter into a software development career.
My detailed opinion:
I chose The Tech Academy because I wanted to switch from a non-technical career path to development. Even though I live in the Portland area, I chose to complete the course online as it allowed me greater flexibility in my schedule. The Tech Academy had a great on-boarding process so I was able to jump right in. The curriculum was comprehensive and I appreciated that it went beyond just learning a coding language. We also learned how a computer functions and runs a program, how web applications are rendered, how code is compiled, and the basics of project management. My only reason for giving the curriculum 4 stars instead of 5 is that it would have been useful to also cover unit testing.
The instructors were excellent and did a great job of answering any questions that I had. They always replyed promptly to e-mails. The job assistance was also very helpful, especially the opportunity to do a mock-interview with the Job Placement Director. Having no experience interviewing for a technical position, the encouragement and feedback I received during the mock-interview was invaluable in building my confidence.

I had a terrific time while being involved with The Tech Academy! Through the bootcamp course, I went from having no coding experience to understanding the fundamentals of several programming languages, such as; C#, SQL, JavaScript and web development languages. I thoroughly enjoyed having the opportunity to learn from the course provided and having the ability to contact instructors with any concerns/questions that I had. My only suggestions for anyone interested in attending is this: 1)Make sure you contact instructors with any concerns. My experience with this has always been positive. 2) Try to dive a little deeper into some of the concepts that are mentioned throughout the course. Since this is only a "bootcamp" then you will need to apply some effort into looking into some material yourself to fully comprehend.Danny Condon of The Tech Academy

Hi William, thanks for your review! I'm glad you got so much out of the course. And indeed, no matter what boot camp you go to, you will continually need to do self-study to fully learn the technology and keep up with it. Good advice to anyone going into a boot camp. -

I found my experience at The Tech Academy to be challenging yet very fulfilling. I was surprised at my ability to learn the concepts, facts, and nuances, for each language and I believe it's because of The Tech Academy's approach to teaching. As a remote student, I feel the system was a bit more challenging because I didn't have anyone to discuss questions or concepts with and sometimes I had to wait hours to hear back from the remote instructor because of my schedule- that still worked out fine but I think there is a major advantage to being on-site and having other students and/or instructors to communicate with. That being said, I really got the most out of the Live Project. It was suggested that the Live Project really brings it all together and I couldn't agree more. The Tech Academy pushes students to be active in the industry and network, take on projects, etc to prepare students for their new career. They have it down to a science and it's proven over and over again.

The Tech Academy provides a well-rounded full-stack format for learning software development. After completing the courses, one has a solid foundation of fundamentals and can use this as a basis for learning additional coding languages and programming concepts, as needed, for any future job position. The courses are self-paced in a very positive environment. There is a tremendous amount of support resources available, including instructors, technical support, weekly soft skill and technical round table forums for interview preparation, an outreach specialist, a job placement director, meetups, and guest lectures.
The Live Project was a rewarding and insightful process. It helped to advance my coding and research skills and allowed first-hand experience with agile methodology and team collaboration. These are all very valuable skills to have for any software developer role. The job placement course was comprehensive and helped provide the tools needed for applying to and obtaining a job. Even after completion of the program, job placement support continued until I was hired. Though the courses take self-discipline, hard work, and dedication, the knowledge and experience gained were well worth the effort!Danny Condon of The Tech Academy

I choose the to enter a coding boot camp because I wanted to re-invigorate my coding skills. I had learned some coding in school, but when I entered the work force, I didn’t have time to keep up with the latest languages and technologies. I believe that programming languages are the new literacy.
I looked at several coding boot camps and I choose the Tech Academy for four reasons, 1) Self-paced; I could move through material quickly, if I felt I already have a good grasp of the material and I was able to linger and do exploratory study if I felt I needed more depth. 2) There was a central location I could go to and live instructors to help in case I had problems, for me the central location helped keep me on track and focused. 3) rolling enrollment and I could start any time. 4) There was a live project course, so I was able to get a sense of how software development works.
In the end I was happy with my choice, I filled the holes in my knowledge and I have strong basis for continued self learning.

I started programming profiile pages on Myspace for my friends so I could have lunch money when I was in middle/high school. Years later I found myself teaching myself how to write code again and wanted to do it for a profession. I didn't have the time or energy for a 4 year+ program and thats when I found out about Boot Camps. I found that The Tech Academy had the best all around curriculum that I needed so I registered. The hardest part for me was the C# course but I learned so much from it that helped me with the Live Project. As a graduate I will actually be starting as an Intern under Erik. I can't wait!

I attended The Tech Academy, first as an online student and, later, as an onsite student in Portland, OR. I did not complete the Job Placement course so I am not officially a graduate even though I have completed all of the actual "learning" at the school.
**PRO**
- The staff are all extremely friendly and personable.
- You can complete the program online or in-person at your discretion.
- The program is self-paced, so you can complete it very quickly if you dedicate yourself to putting in long hours.
- The tuition is lower than most bootcamps. (It was $7,000 when I attended.)
- There are weekly group sessions to practice your soft-skill and technical skill interviewing.
**CON**
- The curriculum is not very deep. I learned very little in my time there that I had not already learned at Teamtreehouse.com.
- There is no sense of "community". Everyone is studying individually at their own pace so it is difficult to brainstorm/commiserate with other students. I came to realize that I very much missed the cohort style of learning that is present at most bootcamps.
- As I mentioned above, you cannot "graduate" unless you complete their job placement course which is a somewhat heavy-handed, micro-managed process where you are required to submit a daily report on your job-hunting activities in which I chose not to participate.
- The feedback on your project submissions is mostly limited to "Nice job. You passed." without giving any good constructive notes on what you can improve upon in your code.
- There is NO pair programming at any point.
- There is NO instruction on software testing. This actually hurt me in a recent phone screen interview where I had to admit that I had no exposure to software testing.
In summary, The Tech Academy is a decent option if you are looking for a low priced school, have spent little time engaged in self-study and are comfortable working solo. If I were making the choice again, I would attend a "traditional" cohort-based bootcamp.
It pains me to write such a negative review because the staff at The Tech Academy are genuinely nice people. I simply feel obligated to offer a true accounting of my personal experience at TTA.

Hi Ted,
Thanks for your review! I'm sorry you didn't have the greatest experience at The Tech Academy. I think you're totally right in that the traditional lecture-based, non-self-paced school would have been a better option for you, since it sounds like that was more what you were looking for in the first place.
Each language we teach could, and does, have an entire bootcamp dedicated to learning that one language. So, we wouldn't go as deep into JavaScript as a bootcamp entirely dedicated to teaching JavaScript. The product of The Tech Academy is a well-rounded junior developer, who has a strong foundation and understanding of core development fundamentals including databases, web development, scripting languages, etc. who by the end, can get a job in software and continue to learn and have a lasting career.
Yes, students do study independently at their own pace. But especially for students who are studying in-person at one of our campuses, there's plenty of opportunity for collaboration and interaction. The weekly soft skills interview roundtable meetings, weekly technical interview roundtables, Wednesday brunches, Friday Tech Talks, and the Live Project at the end of the program all provide opportunities to build camaraderie.
The Job Placement Course has been completely revamped since you did the program. On this course, we've taken all of the most successful actions and advice from our hundreds of graduates who have gotten jobs, and we put it all into the course. You're welcome to take it now for free. We'd still love to help you in any way to get a job.
I'm sorry you feel you didn't get adequate feedback on your drills. I will look into this and get any needed correction done on this.
As mentioned earlier, there is the live project, where student collaborate on a 2-week sprint, working together and developing in an agile environment for a real client. While you're working on the main part of the curriculum, when requested, you are paired up with someone else to work through difficult projects. But paired programming is not the norm throughout the whole program.
You're right that our main curriculum doesn't cover software testing. However, we do have an optional course that you can take that does cover that. Also, the new Job Placement Course covers the Technical Interview in greater depth, which is another reason you might want to jump onto that. :)
We'd still love to do anything possible to help give you a better experience and land a job, so feel free to reach out to me personally at vpforquality@learncodinganywhere.com and we can see what we can do.

Earlier this year, I was laid off from my recurrent temp position of 5 years.. sounds ridiculous, I know, and I had had enough. A former co-worker of mine in the IT department suggested that, since I was interested in software but had no technical background whatsoever and didn't know where to start, that I find a coding bootcamp if I was serious about making the switch. After researching my options, I ended up choosing the Tech Academy because they had a remote option for students, as well as a flexible work schedule. Fortunately for me, I knew ahead of time that I was going to be laid off, so I was able to begin the program while working, up to the end of my tenure. I also selected the Tech Academy because the price was very reasonable for the services they offer, especially compared to their competitors.
Since completing the program, I will be starting a new job as a junior developer this week, and I'm so excited. The Tech Academy's guidance along the way made changing careers much easier than it would have been had I tried to accomplish it alone.

I completed this bootcamp and I now work as an instructor at a different bootcamp. I spent about half my time learning online and half in-person.
It's nice to be able to move at your own pace yet still have real people grade your work. If you're not going to put in more effort than what is asked, you may not have the best experience because the courses are short and only teach you the basics. If you enjoy diving deeper into a subject then this shouldn't be an issue for you. Expect to put in more time than what is stated if you want to walk out of the doors job-ready.
This biggest negative for me was the lack of any partnerships or reputation with local businesses.

Hi Jake,
Thanks for your review! I'm glad you enjoyed the self-paced aspect of things. And that's awesome you're a teacher at another bootcamp now, well done! You're totally right in that we don't teach absolutely everything about each language you learn. You learn enough to be able to get a job, then on-the-job experience really builds up the expertise, which I'm sure you're doing now on a daily basis. I believe there must have been some type of misunderstanding on the partnerships or reputation with local businesses. New Relic has hired 8 of our graduates and regularly asks for more, and we just sent a handful of our graduates to Summit Wireless for paid internships in C# Developer roles. That's just to name a couple. No, we don't guarantee a job, but we certainly do have strong relationships with various local businesses. Our Job Placement Director (jobplacementdirector@learncodinganywhere.com), Aaron Frichtl, is the person who can point you in the right direction. And if you're looking at moving back into the area, I'm sure we could help give you some direction. I'm glad you're working in the industry now, and hope you have a great career in the future!

I wanted to break into the tech industry after graduating college but did not quite have enough experience or a portfolio to show employers. I shopped around the various available bootcamps quite a bit and landed on The Tech Academy primarily for its flexible, self-paced program and reasonable tuition. I was working full time with a non-standard work schedule so being able to complete the courses on not only a part time schedule but a schedule that I got to determine was extremely ideal.
All the curriculum is offered/accessed online for both local and remote students. Some people might think, "Why not do self study then? There are plenty of online tutorials and courses without a boot camp price." That's true, and some people are able to successfully learn through self study and get results, however it requires not only extreme self-discipline, but a great support network which is hard to come by for most. What I mean by that is a a network of people that can hold you accountable, review your work and offer feedback, and provide guidance. This is the value of a boot camp.
The staff at TTA truly are dedicated to the program and helping the students. They are all incredibly friendly and supportive. As it is a self-paced program, you progress through the coursework on your own and any time you have questions or need help the instructors are available to assist you. This also promotes developing the habit of first doing exhaustive research on your own to solve a problem then knowing when you need to ask for help. This is a habit of successful software developers and will be crucial as a junior developer working with and learning from senior developers. The school is staffed 7 days a week, 12 hours a day Monday through Friday. Remote students can call or skype in and speak with instructors.
On top of being available for assistance, a number of the instructors and staff are extremely engaged in the tech community and contribute to it outside of the school by hosting events, participating in local meetup groups, and volunteering. These people are committed to involving others in tech.
You can also receive weekly preparation for interviews. The staff does a great job providing guidance and practice in both soft skill and technical interview questions.
As for curriculum, TTA covers more technologies than most other boot camps. This has its pros and cons, as some will point out that by covering more topics you are spread thinner in each area instead of spending more time getting a deeper understanding on fewer topics. On the other hand, gaining skills in a slightly wider array of topics opens up more opportunities for employment and getting your foot in the door. I have a friend who completed a different boot camp and he said he seemed to find that knowing a couple more languages would have been the optimal route for getting hired. Once you have the fundamentals you can deepen your knowledge and specialize as you gain experience and find what you most enjoy. With courses covering HTML, CSS, JavaScript, SQL, Python, C# and ASP.NET MVC, TTA really does create well rounded software developers. My only wish was for some of the courses to cover front-end development with JS a bit more extensively.
Job placement is also great at TTA. The staff give you all the tools to help you succeed in your job search. They encourage you to start as early in the program as possible. By attending the TTAs many interview practice sessions as well as networking at tech meetups I was able to secure a job before the program ended. TTA guides you through your job search by ensuring your portfolio, resume, and LinkedIn are being presented as best as possible, hosting seminars on what employers are looking for, and bringing people in from companies looking to hire or people that may provide a good connection to job opportunities.
All in all, I would say TTA offers the best value of any boot camp due to its great staff and resources, flexible schedule, and breadth of languages

This was definitely one of the most interesting times of my life. The application process for the school was pretty seamless and easy to get started. However, I do feel as though I was pushed to sign up faster for the "discounted tuition". It was available every month subsequent. I did not enjoy that pressure. When the course work began for me, I was informed that they would be making changes and updating information as I went along. Going through the program and the courses I set a weekly study minimum and a deadline to finish the program. While completing projects, it was a little difficult to get an immediate response to a problem unless I called in ahead and said that I would be emailing the instructors about my issue. They were extremely helpful when they responded though. They were reassuring and also honest on whether they could help or not. The school definitely instills the need to research before asking any questions. The learning portion has been fantastic for me, honestly. An issue I did have was the student daily newsletters. Whenever a student completed a course, other students were notified. I was never included in any of the emails for completing courses. Upon completion of the live project, the job placement course, is next. I do not agree with how this is set up. As someone who had to borrow money to attend the school, I had a deadline and I need to submit proof of completion. Unfortunately due to having to apply to numerous jobs OR landing a job first, I still have yet to officially graduate. Luckily, I landed a job that I am excited to start. Frustrating none the less. I feel as though the help of finding jobs and tips should still be available(and it is) even if the student doesn't apply to the required number of jobs. Some students just attend to learn and move on to other things and so it sets a feeling of entrapment. This is my personal opinion. The staff is still friendly and helpful! Thats where I give the most props and kudos to the school. EVERYONE wants to help! And if they can't they will find you someone who can!

Hey Stefon, thanks for the review!
I am sorry you felt pressured on the tuition increase! We actually did just increase the tuition $1,000. What happens is that once a month our Board of Directors meet and one of the topics they discuss is the tuition price. We cost less than the average code school and sometimes the Board of Directors chooses to extend the discount. I hope this makes more sense!
I'm glad that you got a lot out of the course work and help from the instructors. I agree - the instructors and job placement staff are really there to help!
I apologize that you weren't included in Student Daily Newsletter when you completed a course. That was an error on our part, which was happening with a couple of students who enrolled within a certain time period. This has since been corrected. Thank you for pointing that out!
Very well done on landing a job within a couple months of finishing all the course work here! Best of luck in your new career! -

I enjoyed my experience with The Tech Academy. The instructors were available and supportive, and the program worked great with my busy and fluctuating schedule. I truly learned a lot (being somewhat tech illiterate when I came in), and came out of the program satisfied that I got what I came for.
Some of the curriculum materials seemed a little outdated, although I suppose that will always be a problem for tech schools. Additionally, it sounds like my Live Project could have been directed better (compared to other students' experiences). However, The Tech Academy seems to be on a constant, attentive mission to collect student feedback, and to continually update their program. That's worth a lot.

I entered the Tech Academy with very limited coding experience and no idea as to what a developer does on a day to day basis. By the time I was done, I had an unrelenting impulse to learn more and more and more. It's honestly addicting, and a very profitable habit at that. The instructors are excellent, the course is incredibly thorough, and everyone is happy to help.
The curriculum is structured to both teach a base understanding of core languages, and to encourage students to pursue apt facility in a realm of particular interest. The process works for folks of all technical backgrounds; I learned many things that I thought I already understood and countless things that I was not aware existed. I could feel my brain rerouting to make new connections.
I encourage everyone to look into the Tech Academy. It's an amazing bang for your buck.

I cannot say enough about how much I've enjoyed my experience with The Tech Academy. I am a college senior and I have been working through The Tech Academy's software development bootcamp over the past few months. The course gives you a wealth of programming knowledge ranging from computer fundamentals to programming languages like C# and Python. The course is structured in a way that really builds upon itself. You often see prior course topics and languages reappear in later courses. In addition, the live project portion at the end of the course provided me with one of the most beneficial experiences I have ever had in my learning career. The remote instructors are always available to help guide you through coming up with a solution whenever you get stuck during the course. I recently received a job offer from Epic Systems in Madison, WI and I have absolutely no doubt that the skills I gained from The Tech Academy played a large role in me obtaining the position.

Before finding The Tech Academy, I had worked in a technical support role in which I grew to dislike. After my last contract ended, I decided to take some time off and pursue other interests. I had always known that developers are good jobs, so once I started thinking about finding a job again, being a software developer was at the top of the list.
I explored a lot of different options while researching coding schools and online programs. I decided on The Tech Academy for price and location. For me, the best thing about The Tech Academy was to provide a positive mindset and a set direction while progressing in my goal of becoming a developer. The academy's goal is to teach you to be a developer and help you target your job search and the entire staff wants to help you reach that goal. The instructors, outreach, and job placement staff all want you to succeed. Also, your fellow students are all working towards the same goal (at their own pace) which put me in a positive mindset preparing me to reenter the workforce.
Thanks!

Overall I'm satisfied with the knowledge and experience I gained from The Tech Academy. They started from the basics on computers as it relates to computer programming, to working on your project and finally working on a live project collaborating with others! You'll encounter a few challenges. But you'll have to counter that with time you need to prepare, constant questions, and practice (you know the basic of being a student).

This Bootcamp changed my life. It was a good thing and a bad thing. Up front I was excited and couldn't wait to get the curriculum completed so that I could become a developer of the internet. I was working full time during the whole program and it was easy enough to finish on time with the projected graduation date. I was exstatic when finished and hit the ground with a legs churning to find a job, problem was, no company really liked what they were seeing. My resume was on point, I had a killer cover letter for each job applied, and I was energetic and upbeat when I was around tech peaople and at meet ups; but, no interviews, in phone calls, nothing!! I had hit a wall and was starting to doubt myself and my skills and depression wasn't long behind that. I quit my job because I had no time to go to meet ups or even go to an interview if someone happened to call me. I moved back to California because I couldn't support my life away from family without a paying job, and depression grew. I was at a real low, I had just been to 3 funerals in 4 weeks and was about to start looking into going back to an industry I hated when I got a phone call from a company wanting to interview me for their Application Developer position. I couldn't believe the phone call and the good news just kept rolling because a day after that one another came my way. I couldn't believe what was happening and before I knew it, I had accepted a position and am now in the field I have been fighting to get into for almost a year now. The Tech Academy gave me all the tools I needed to find success, It's not their fault I didn't have time, or didn't listen, or couldn't commit. Aaron was the best friend anyone could have asked for in the Job Development department. Other then that I guess one thing I wasn't expecting was all of the courses that were used from other learning websites. It was a bit disconcerting at the time but they were helpful and had a lot of information to teach. Thank you Tech Academy for changing my life.

The Tech Academy offers an excellent foundation in six highly-demanded software languages as well as principles of computer science in general. The staff is knowledgeable, patient, and eager to help. My favorite aspect of the curriculum is the Live Projects; they're a chance to gain practical experience in skill sets that tech companies are seeking, and as long as you put at least two weeks into a single project, how long you participate and how many projects to which you contribute is entirely up to you. I haven't encountered any other software bootcamps that offer so comprehensive an education for such an affordable tuition.
Fair warning, though: the "Job Placement Course" basically amounts to "You don't get your certificate of completion until you send out 35 resumes or get hired, whichever comes first." This is not a program for people who think that getting a piece of paper is going to legitimize their job-seeking in software development; it's for those looking for a great start to a learning process that will last you your entire career.

First off, I want to state how willing and helpful The Tech Academy is. When first signing up with the program, I told them I would be onsite. Two days before my start date however I had to move back to California. With no complaints, they happily put me onto the remote program, and sent a computer to me which arrived to California before I did.
During the program, I was given plentiful information and real world practices to learn coding. They say the best way to learn, is to fail. And The Tech Academy will have you create business grade software entirely on your own, urging you to figure out issues and problems, just like you would in the real world. Doing so, I truly started to feel more and more confident in my coding abilities, knowing I could create software from the ground up, while being able to solve any issue that comes my way. This isn't to say that you have no help available. There are times, where help is definitely needed. and The Tech Academy had no shortage of help available. They spent 3 hours once helping me figure out an issue my computer was having, and another time staying an hour after the school closed to help me finish my program.
Lastly, the job support did everything in their power to help you. I was living in a trailer in a small town, getting virtually no leads due to my location. The Tech Academy offered me to fly out to Portland to do a on site internship, where I gained the necessary experience and location to ultimately land a job in the industry.

Self-Paced Program Was Perfect Fit for Me
Read more Read less of Chris L.'s review
I enrolled at the Tech Academy after making a decision to transition from a prior professional career as a lawyer, and so I came into this program with years of experience in office and other project-based work settings.
General Structure: The Tech Academy's self-paced program structure appealed to me as someone who can work independently without constant supervision. It's not perfect for everyone. The instruction and coursework is primarily through video and web lessons, rather than in-person lectures/classes. There is live, in-person assistance available if you get stuck on a particular lesson and project, but you have to be okay with seeking it out, as opposed to just expecting that someone will help you, which is really a great lesson for new developers to learn. There is also an honest and sincere effort by the administrators and job placement coordinators to help prepare students for real-world interviews and technical/soft-skills questions, which I see as valuable to students who haven't had those resources before (I used to also do career counseling and mentoring for professionals, so I see the value of those resources).
Coursework: What also appealed to me over other coding bootcamps I researched was that it emphasized a broader, full-stack engineer curriculum. I had the opportunity to learn coding from front-end and back-end perspectives, and I liked how there was a strong focus on using Microsoft technologies, languages, and frameworks, to build a cohesive understanding of a particular stack. We learned C#, Python, JavaScript, HTML/CSS, SQL, through practical projects. We also have a two-week (or more) "live project" where you get development experience working with real-world clients and projects through Prosper IT, which TA was created from.
Pre-TA Experience: Prior to TA, I had on-and-off experience learning basic HTML/CSS/JavaScript, C++, and certain math/science related languages from my STEM background before law. However, you don't need that background in order to succeed because the program assumes that you have little to no prior experience with coding. Because it was self-paced, I could quickly move through refresher material and spend more time on other languages, like C#. It's paced for most students to complete in 15-20 weeks, but you can take up to 30 weeks to complete the program.
Overall Experience: Overall, I had a positive experience with TA. The transition for me felt comfortable because of my prior science/tech experience and the fact that I really wanted to make this leap after having invested in a prior career that did not resonate with me as much. I was very motivated to find a job in the Portland area, and was able to interview successfully for a position with a local company that I really wanted to work for after about 2+ months from finishing my work. I'd highly recommend this program for people who may have worked in another industry and had some real-life work experience who know they want to make this leap.

I've recently graduated from The Tech Academy (TTA) of Portland, OR. I was a remote student. I took 30 weeks of self-paced management to finish. What I learned exceeded my expectations. If you are serious, committed and you pass the entrance exams, you can learn to code with TTA. Just a few weeks after graduating from TTA I was hired as a Software Developer. A large part of securing that job was my SQL, ASP.NET, C#, MVC, TFS training at TTA. Remember, this is a "boot camp" so that should tell you that its no cake-walk, you will be challenged. Why I chose TTA:
I am 50+ years old and after 20+ years working in engineering fields in the semiconductor industry, I had a gap in employment and decided to retrain myself and learn the latest software development technologies.
After lots of research I chose TTA for their outstanding remote program which included hot programming courses like JavaScript, SQL, Python, C#, ASP.NET, etc. While searching for a boot camp school last year I didn't see many that offered a solid C#, ASP.NET, SQL heavy curriculum. I'm glad I chose TTA because the job I landed needed those skills. Honest Feedback: - TTA is not very expensive compared to other programs when I was researching. I feel I got a great bargain.
- TTA admissions: They “know” they are offering you a real “bargain” for an excellent Software Development Boot Camp. You just don’t know it yet.
- The school is legit. It is not a fake. It has a brick and mortar building for their local students.
- The remote study program is “solid,” very easy to follow, and you really do learn. I can’t imagine it being any better.
- TTA has a great start with "Computer Basics" which eases you into the program. I really loved how they start you out with a solid foundation.
- The course does increase in challenge as you go; however, it’s well-balanced and builds on prior learning. For example, after finishing a challenging project for a course,
you get a breather with the new course giving normal training for a while until the next project or drill.
- It's a fun program with an enjoyable positive environment even for me as a remote student.
- They have lots of communication such as a daily newsletter, etc.
- You do learn what they teach if you commit to study and drill.
- The founders of the school & instructors are really smart and have a great attitude for sharing their knowledge.
- I have never submitted buggy code, or asked a question that I was not able to get a correct answer from an instructor.
- You will learn how to create some professional looking websites and learn to make them public and accessible by securing domains and server access.
- Finishing a project or drill really makes you feel proud and increases your confidence.
- They teach you how to leverage the internet for learning. This is a big advantage.
- Learning and using GitHub/Version Control really makes you feel like a pro. Keep all your projects in GitHub organized and they will be portfolio ready.
- The study platform (learning management system) is web based, easy to follow and it keeps track of your progress.
- Many of the projects are challenging; however, you really do get all the skills for a particular project, you just need to apply them.
Instructors are really helpful if you get stuck.
- SQL: You will learn SQL & databases. Study SQL hard, as you will continue to use SQL for databases in the more advanced courses and potential jobs.
- TTA offers C# & ASP.NET training. Hint: Budget extra days or study hours for this course because it is really good and gets challenging.
- You will learn how to create websites with databases and web applications coding in C# using Visual Studio, .NET, MVC, TFS.
- Live Project: At the completion of all your coursework you get to join a team of students on a large coding project using a team based setup, revision control, etc.
- The Live Project is the best part of the course as you get to use all your skills, it is really a very satisfying end to the boot camp.
- You will learn professional software development methods like AGILE, SCRUMM, etc. and use them in the Live Project.
- You have to submit a daily report for each day you study for any amount of time. They will send you a friendly reminder if you stop regular communication.
- You have to write lots of essays but they are fun to do and you really learn a lot.
- TTA also wants you to fill out a weekly report that is mostly feedback on the school so they can improve.
- They really like feedback and will love it if you suggest an improvement.
- I did not finish in 15 weeks. I took 30 weeks of self paced management.
- Tip: When you get to C# & ASP.NET, Kick it in gear! and put in 40-60 hours if you can. I had to do that.Danny Condon of The Tech Academy

My experience with the Tech Academy was great! Before starting the Tech Academy I had a BA in Biomedical Sciences and came to the conclusion that becoming a health care provider wasn’t what I wanted to do with my life. I then began looking into other fields that interested me and found that the tech field really sparked an interest. I was contemplating whether to start studying on my own or do a “boot camp” style course. I decided I wanted to take an online course, not only to keep me motivated, but also to learn programming in a way that followed a cohesive progression, and yet still have the ability to reach out to instructors for questions and advice. The instructors were extremely helpful, and most importantly, they made an effort to challenge my thinking throughout the different courses, which was something I really appreciated. The job placement course was also extremely helpful when I started the job search process. The university I had attended hadn’t given me any knowledge in how to actually land a job, and the Tech Academy taught me everything I needed to know. The job placement instructors are very passionate about what they do, and they worked with me to help me land a great job by prepping me in mock interviews and giving me valuable insight that I otherwise wouldn’t have know. After completing all of the courses, and spending a month searching for jobs, I found myself landing a paid internship at Microsoft.

The Tech Academy (TTA) is an excellent remote study Bootcamp. TTA has exceeded my expectations and I have learned so much.
The boot camp is focused on creating junior developers for the web and web applications industry which is a booming field. This is a "full stack" BootCamp which basically means the top programming languages for web development. If you watch all their recruitment videos then the course is pretty much what they say it is.
I chose a "Full Stack" boot camp because I wanted a chance to get out of the semiconductor industry. Regardless of the focus on "Full Stack" you are still learning to
code and you can leverage that knowledge as you wish.Honest Feedback:
- TTA is not very expensive compared to other programs when I was researching. I feel I got a great bargain.

- I have never submitted buggy code, or asked a question that I was not able to get a correct answer from an instructor.
- If you submit buggy code for help, the instructors will give you hints such as "umm... better check if you declared your vars as integers."
Rather than just outright answering it for you. And if you continue to have trouble, the amount of help will also increase as you work on a problem.
- You will learn how to create some professional looking websites and learn to make them public and accessible by securing domains and server access.
- Finishing a project or drill really makes you feel proud and increases your confidence.

I recently completed The Tech Academy’s software developer bootcamp, and overall, I view it as a fantastic investment of time, money, and energy.Coming into the program, I had high expectations, and the curriculum did not disappoint. I learned a great deal, gaining a much deeper understanding of concepts that were previously opaque to me. I now feel very confident as I transition into the job market. The one area where I experienced some friction was with the instructor communication style. Because I worked full-time throughout the bootcamp, I relied heavily on my own self-discipline to stay on track. While I understand that instructors aim to keep students moving forward, the frequent follow-ups regarding my progress sometimes felt unnecessary and became a source of frustration, as my dedication to completing the coursework was never in question.Despite that minor issue, the quality of the material and the professional preparation provided made the experience well worth it. I would recommend this program to anyone looking for a comprehensive foundation in software development. -

Hi Philip,Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We would like to clarify that our career support extends beyond providing a spreadsheet for tracking applications. Our Job Placement services include comprehensive resume, LinkedIn, GitHub, and portfolio reviews, as well as interview preparation. We work very hard with our graduates to help them fulfil their goal of working in tech and we believe this is reflected in our success rate with over 76% of our graduates hired into tech roles. Regarding your employment as an instructor, we take the health and safety of our team very seriously. We have no policy requiring ill employees to work, and our records do not reflect a reported illness or time-off request from you during that time. Perhaps your request was lost or you may have had a verbal conversation with someone, but that absolutely did not reflect the school's position. During Covid, we had specific policies in place to protect our students and staff which included testing and isolation for employees who felt unwell. Regardless of what happened, we appreciated the work you did for us while an Instructor. If you wish to discuss your specific concerns further, please feel free to reach out to us directly. -

I took the software developer bootcamp. At that moment in my career, I had been mostly self taught and felt I lacked good fundamentals. I researched, and found this place had good reviews and staff were friendly. The instructors and staff exceeded all my hopes. Very helpful, even in some complex circumstance. I cannot rate the job placement portion though because I did not go through that. The only thing that stuck out to me is that the cost seemed a little high for modern times. I know they have overhead that they don't need to explain to me but I also felt that for online courses, it is possible to find competing stuff a little cheaper. That opinion may also be skewed from already having some experience in this world. All said though, if staff, instructors, and support are important to you, this is a GREAT choice. Especially if you are new to coding. -

I wanted to make a career change to the tech field as a programmer, and Tech Academy provided a way to do so. Out of their many bootcamps to choose from, I chose their Python Bootcamp, given that I was already familiar with that programming language. Even though I’ve already been exposed to programming during my education at college and during my career—making Python GUI applications for the companies that I worked for—they provided the means necessary tools and taught me other subjects that I needed to know and understand to succeed in my new career as a programmer.
Pros
Teaching you the fundamentals of computers, bits vs bytes, and having you learn several programming languages to become well-rounded. And also teach you how to use Git and the different methodologies how teams operate at a tech company. Overall, they make sure you are well-rounded in programming, how computers work, and how a team will function at a company. They also did a great job of providing resume and cover letter templates to use for applying to jobs.
Cons
At the time of this review, they didn’t explain that programming languages may or have a standard they follow when it comes to naming variables, functions, etc. Python, for example, follows PEP8 rules. Another thing they didn’t explain was how programming languages treat variables when passed into functions—pass by value, pass by reference, or pass by object reference. What I stated above can be considered more advanced topics, and what they taught you was the basics needed to succeed at the start of your career, but it would be nice if they made a comment about it since I believe it’s an important thing to know when learning any programming language. -

Enrolling in The Tech Academy's Java and Android Developer Bootcamp was one of the best decisions I’ve made for my professional growth. The program exceeded my expectations in both structure and content. The curriculum was laid out, guiding me from the basics of programming to more advanced concepts with clarity and consistency. What I appreciated most was how complex topics were broken down into simple, easy-to-understand lessons. As someone who learns best through doing, the hands-on exercises were incredibly beneficial. I was able to reinforce each concept by writing actual code and building real applications. For example, I gained a solid understanding of object-oriented programming through practical exercises that had me create and work with classes, inheritance, and interfaces.Another standout feature of the bootcamp was its coverage of Git and version control. This was particularly valuable because I was using Git in a professional environment while attending the bootcamp. Thanks to the in-depth tutorials and real-world projects, I was able to apply what I learned at work immediately. The course also touched on other essential technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Android development, which gave me a well-rounded understanding of both front-end and back-end development. Additionally, the support from instructors and staff was consistent and helpful—they were always available to clarify topics and offer guidance.Overall, The Tech Academy not only taught me how to code but also helped me build the confidence to pursue a career in software development. I highly recommend this bootcamp to anyone looking to transition into tech or strengthen their development skills. -

I went into the Game Developer Bootcamp specifically with the goal of getting hired. The help of the job placement staff combined with the experience gained in the live project internships was enough to land me 5 interviews and a job out of 187 applications.

But from my experience, this boot camp was worth it for the job placement alone. Being completely honest, you are at a SEVERE disadvantage applying for jobs compared to someone graduating from this boot camp. They teach you how to interview, apply, where to look, how to portray your skills, how to build a portfolio, a resume, and what to expect. Not to mention, they have companies reaching out to the Tech Academy that are looking for graduates to employ. That bit of networking alone helps with finding employment after graduation. Sure you can do some of that stuff yourself, but who do you turn to when you're still unemployed? When you graduate from The Tech Academy you are connected with job placement staff to help you on your job search for a year. I recommend taking advantage of this. Do mock interviews with them, drill concepts, and keep in touch. Get as much information as you can from them. They are going to help you prepare for job-specific interviews, avoid pitfalls / scams, and re-strategize if you’re struggling. Mine reached out to me twice a week, every week to check in on progress and help with finding new opportunities.
Edit: Adding some full disclosure here for the Game Developer Bootcamp particularly after reading some other reviews. As of my time, (graduated Nov 2024) you will be following some courses that are external to The Tech Academy. This was fully communicated with me before enrolling in the bootcamp and wasn’t a surprise. If it hadn’t been communicated I might have felt differently about it, but they were transparent. These courses were on Pluralsight and some on Udemy. The courses walk you through how to use Unity & Unreal Engine by making games that you will put on your portfolio. Any problems or trouble understanding something from these external sources were compensated with explanation from a Tech Academy instructor.
If you think you are better off following course tutorials online then go do it. However, from my experience attempting to follow online tutorials is that you will eventually get stuck or get to a point where it’s over your head. Then what do you do? Endless google searches? Forum scrolling until you get overwhelmed and give up? Leave a comment on the course and hope the instructor is still answering questions? Maybe the tutorial is outdated. Maybe the version the course is using is no longer supported. Or maybe you encounter a bug that the guy in the video doesn’t. Every one of these things has happened to me. The difference here is that you have a team of people that are standing by, ready to answer every question in a way that makes sense to you. When you get stuck, somebody is there. That was worth it enough for me.
If you are able to answer all of your questions, debug every situation you find yourself in without asking for help, and understand the decision making of concepts in videos, then you probably are well beyond the scope of what this bootcamp has to offer you. Just my 2 pennies.

Good Data Science Program

From March through June 2024, I attended The Tech Academy's Data Science program. I found the program to be affordable when compared to other boot camps in my area, and the curriculum could be completed remotely with a self-paced schedule, which was why I chose it. The courses, which I was able to finish in around three months of full-time study, covered basic computer programming and hardware, project management, and a range of data science and analysis techniques. After that, I completed a two-week internship working as a junior data scientist in an Agile sprint framework, mentored by a very knowledgeable and helpful senior developer, and in doing so built up a good portfolio of data analysis work to present to employers. Then I was enrolled into a job placement course with a dedicated job placement director who also did a fantastic job and worked very hard to improve my resume, GitHub profile/portfolio, cover letter, and interview skills. Once I had finished with the curriculum and graduated, I was job hunting in a really terrible market - in spring and summer 2024 there was a huge wave of layoffs in the tech industry including high-profile companies such as Intel and Google, so the tech industry was flooded with extremely knowledgeable and experienced people, and few companies were hiring. TTA kindly served as a reference for my data analysis skills and the experience I gained in my internship, and my job placement director stuck around to help me out with resume and cover letter touch-ups, passing along openings, and practice interviews the whole time. After four months of job hunting, I received an offer in the data analysis field and am very happy with my experience. -

trong Coding Foundations with Some Room for Improvement in Cybersecurity Training

I recently completed a cybersecurity bootcamp, and while the overall experience was positive, there were some challenges along the way. At the start of the program, instructor support was fantastic, with quick help available just a phone call away. Midway through, however, the support system shifted to email-based assistance, which led to longer wait times—sometimes over an hour. This change made it harder to make the most of my study time and created some frustration, though the instructors remained helpful once I could get in touch with them. Thankfully, this was not an issue during the Live Project, where the director was very accessible and provided great support. On the coding side, the program was very hands-on, giving me plenty of opportunities to practice and build a strong foundation in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and SQL. The projects really helped cement my understanding and prepared me well for real-world applications. However, when it came to the cybersecurity portion, there were too many videos and not enough practical exercises. Although the videos on front-end security, cloud security, and network security were informative, I would have preferred more hands-on experience with tools like Wireshark. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to work with Wireshark until the final live project, and earlier exposure to industry-standard tools like this would have made the cybersecurity training more effective. That being said, the job placement support was a real highlight. I received excellent guidance with resume reviews, interview prep, and job search strategies, which made me feel much more confident as I began applying for roles in the tech industry. Overall, while I would have appreciated more hands-on cybersecurity training and more consistent support, the bootcamp provided a solid foundation and helpful resources for transitioning into tech.
