A Great Introduction to Programming

I found an ad for Flatiron School's bootcamp prep and thought I would give it a try. My background in university was philosophy, and I figured there would be a lot in common with symbolic logic, which is something I really enjoyed in school. Finding Bootcamp Prep may be the single greatest thing I ever stumbled upon. It taught me the basics in Ruby and Javascript, did a really thorough job of explaining concepts and taking things at a pace that is really helpful to learning; but most importantly, it helped me discover the joys of coding and opened up the door to a career I'd never thought I'd be pursuing. I'm happy to say, after Bootcamp Prep, I will now be attending Flatiron School fulltime over the next 3.5 months before embarking onto an awesome new career. Thanks, Flatiron School.

Flatiron is the best possible way to begin a career in tech.

Coding bootcamps have been getting a lot of attention recently for touting high median salaries after a (relatively) short period of study. I can't speak for all bootcamps but I can say that Flatiron lives up to the hype. Learning to code from a non-technical background is difficult, but teaching yourself how to do it increases that difficulty exponentially. I learned more in my first month at Flatiron than I did in six months teaching myself. The community, the curriculum, the pressure, all of it combines in a perfect storm to drive you to do your best.
-The instructors and staff here are fantastic. Supportive doesn't even begin to cover it, but the feeling of inclusion and community made what is a very difficult curriculum, fun.
-The students. I don't know how, but the Flatiron admissions staff must be magic because almost all of the students here are great people. Being a part of a group of such diligent, creative, sociable people inspired me to do so much more than I thought possible.
-The curriculum. It's not for everyone, it's incredibly hard. That being said, if you got accepted, chances are you can do it. It doesn't cover everything you should know but considering the time constraints of the immersive, the curriculum makes sense. You should expect to always be learning outside the classroom. This isn't like college where you show up for tests and hand in all the homework at the end of the semester.
-The campus. If you have a chance to apply to the immersive, I highly recommend checking out the campus. It's conducive to getting work done, while also having all the bells and whistles to keep it fun and a good place to hang out. There's also tons of meetups/activities/guest speakers/meditation workshops etc... There's never a shortage of things to keep you busy.
In conclusion. As I mentioned, it's not for everyone. But it really is what you make of it. It will probably be the hardest couple of months you've ever experienced, but you'll get to reap those benefits for the rest of your life as you begin a career in this dynamic industry. Also you'll probably meet a bunch of the coolest people in NYC.

Amazing Program

I attended Flatiron School's iOS Development Course, and I can vouch for it being an amazing program.
The course leads you through the basics of coding through the complexities of app development. You'll learn enough to make your own first app, and you'll have the knowedge to qualify for your first job as an app developer. By the end of the program, 90% of the students were working or had finished building their first iPhone app.
As far as the instructors, they're great. They're knowledgable and attentive, and they'll be your mentors as well as your friends. The operations staff are great too, providing an atmosphere that fosters teamwork and communal learning. The students I attended with were great. I became friends with each and every one of them, and still keep in touch with many. The whole atmosphere is overwhelmingly positive.
The cirriculum is tough, but coding is tough. You're going to be lost a lot. You're going to complain to your classmates about how this assignment is impossible. You're going to vent to your friends and your significant other. Then you're going to get your program working and it's an amazing feeling.
At the end of your course your are assigned a career coach, who is there to help you get a job. My coach was very attentive and helpful. Within two months of graduation I was employed full time at a great company as a Mobile App developer. The first interview I had with my current company was organized by Flatiron, and my career coach aided me through the interview process. I'm a bit of an outlier to have landed a steady job so quickly, but not a totally unique case.
If you're thinking about attending, know this:
This is not the place to go if you're looking to have a career handed to you on a platter. If you're not ready to put your life on hold for 3 months while you learn to code, then you should wait to find a time that you are.
The payoff for this course has a direct relationship to the amount you put into it. If you leave every day at 6pm and go home and not code, you're not going to get your money's worth. But if you stay up late working on class projects, start work on your own personal app, spend as much time as you can asking the instructors questions, take advantage of Flatiron organized events, then you will thrive here and you will land that job you've been waiting for. The instructors, the operations team, and the managment will all try to get and keep you inspired, and they're here to help at every turn, but the work is up to you.

Amazing life decision!

I was a personal trainer and hustling to make ends meet. I took my business online and I was more interested in how the technologies worked I was using so I decided to learn to program.I started with the book Dummies for Programming and continued to do free online tutorials like W3schools, codeschool, and codecademy. Learning the basics of HTML, CSS, and Javascript is a great start!
I decided to go to the Flatiron Jump Start weekend where basics are explained more in-depth and you get to apply HTML, CSS, Javascript, and Bootstrap in a 2-day workshop. The Jump Start price can be applied to their enrollment AND there are scholarships available. It is important you research what bootcamp you would want to go to. Who's to say a review on this website doesn't take anyone to write. I talked to a couple different ones and decided Learn Academy was going to be the best fit for me since they are heavily involved in the tech community and there is an internship INCLUDED in their program!
Going to a bootcamp honestly changed my life for the better--it started me on a path to a new career where the pay and quality of life is way better. I'm more engaged in my work and I get to BUILD things that are making a difference in the world. I made a lot of friends in my cohort and continue to meet fellow professionals through Learn's alumni network and local tech meetups. Every interview I went on as I was looking for work was at the recommendation of Learn's outreach coordinator, and I continue to talk to my mentors from school when I'm blocked on a coding problem or need career advice.

Great Bootcamp Prep Course for Technical Interview

I enrolled in the Bootcamp Prep Course in order to prepare for the technical interview portion for the Software Engineering Immersive admissions process at Flatiron School. The lessons were clearly laid out and easy to understand. There was also a ton of support available to me that I utilized, both from fellow learners, as well as Flatiron staff. The lessons and labs directly corelated to the types of labs that were presented to me for the technical interview and I am positive they were the key to my success in the technical interview. It also provided me with a good idea about whether or not the Flatiron School was right for me and something I wanted to pursue further.
I highly recommend taking this course before completing the technical interview.

Before deciding to apply to the Flatiron School's full time NYC program, I took the boot camp prep course online.
It far exceeded my expecations. It was a challenging progression that did a great job of teaching me different things I could do with Javascript. Its better than any other tutorial or free course I've explored online.
Some of the other courses are show-and-tells where you complete an exercise, think you know something, and move on, regardless of if you learned anything. Flatiron really made me think about what I had to code and what tools I would have to use to solve the problem. The course gave me a great sense of why certain problems are approached certain ways.
Additionally, the read along lessons had well written, practical analogies and even made me lol a few times. It was enjoyable and educational.
The Bootcamp Prepcourse is definitely worth doing.

I discovered a passion for coding and set my mind to getting into a coding bootcamp. Flatiron was my first choice. I was drawn to Flatiron not only because of the glaring reviews I came across about the quality of the education provided, but also, and foremost, because of its values of passion, creativity, collegiality, positivity, self-development. These values really resonate to me and I felt like I could fit in well. So I applied for the immersive program and started working dilligently on the Bootcamp prep.
The Bootcamp prep is awesome and totally free! It goes through the fundamentals of Javascript and Ruby, and tests your knowledge with labs that become progressively harder to solve. One of these labs is the basis of the technical interview that an applicant has to pass to be accepted into a class. I loved the labs, even the hard ones. I got totally obsessed with trying to solve them and if felt sooo good when I did. They are like small logic puzzles so if you're the type of person who enjoys solving puzzles or logic problems, you'll prob get hooked as well.
I was also very impressed with the instrustors. I got stuck a few times and there is someone available to help untill 1am. Everyone I spoke with was super nice, helpful and direct (including the admissions and accounting staff, which says a lot about the culture at Flatiron IMO).
I ended up getting accepted into the immersive program which I'll start in April (yay!). If you want to get into a coding bootcamp, I'd definitely recommend doing Flatiron's prep course. Great quality, access to instructors, the community and resources (such as GIT) and totally free!

The Flatiron School over delivered on their promise of teaching relevant coding skills and job placement. I found out about the Web Development program through a friend who had graduated from the Flatiron School and was now thriving as a developer at an early stage start up. I have since recommended the school as the best option available to anyone I meet seeking to begin a career as a programmer.
My instructor, Steven Nunez, was one of the most engaging teachers I have had at any level. His relentless commitment to his students and his empowering teaching methods have helped me continue on a path of exponential learning.
5 Stars!

I began my studies at the Flatiron School in 2014 in the web development program. I had very little code experiencing but I knew that this was a career path I wanted to take. I spent many years in retail as a buyer/merchandise planner but was getting bored with my career. After considerable thought I decided to just leave my job and embark on this journey and I have never looked back.
Flatiron was warm welcoming environment, they provided me a solid coding foundation, gave me the confidence to write blogs, prepared me to speak intelligently about coding, allowed me to create really cool apps and meet some great new friends. The part that was most appealing about Flatiron school was that they promised to find me a job upon graduation. I was nervous but withing 4 weeks of graduating, they held up their end of the bargain and landed me a job. I now work as a Front End Developer and everyday I get to enjoy the work that I do and the people I work with. None of this would have happened if it were not for the Flatirons School.

Attending Flatiron School’s iOS Immersive Program was bar-none, one of the most life-changing decisions of my life.
Coming from a non-technical background, I’d always seen apps has “magic,” in the sense that, you downloaded it, and it just…worked. So the idea of making apps as a career was beyond daunting, but with the guidance and support of the fantastic instructors, classmates, and staff at Flatiron — the overall experience was enlightening and fulfilling.
The course isn’t easy, and it isn’t meant to be, so if you’re thinking of signing up on a whim without any real motivations — you will not get out of the program everything you can. But if you put in the time, the effort, the blood, sweat, and tears, you’ll leave the course with an almost fundamental shift in your thinking (how to think like a program-solver).
No programming bootcamp is the be-all end-all destination for aspiring developers and I’d be wary of any program that claims to be. Don’t get me wrong — Flatiron can, and will teach you all the fundamental basics of iOS development, but that is only the first stepping stone on a path that leads off into the distance.
The greatest gift from Flatiron was instilling and nurturing my passion for creation and problem solving, and more importantly, the means by which I could continue that trend on my own. The Flatiron School teaches you the how, and it’s up to you to discover the why.
Post-graduation, I got an internship turned full-time and for the first time in my life, I can’t wait to go to work every morning.

Flatiron School teaches not just coding, but how to THINK as a developer

I completed the Ruby Bootcamp at the Flatiron School. This was one of the most intense, memorable, and transformative experience of my life. The fact that I have now mostly switched from Ruby to using full-stack JavaScript but can still apply what I learned in this program is a great testament to the high quality of the program. While we on one level were learning the Ruby programming language (and then, once we had that foundation in place, building web apps with Rails), the real goal was to teach how to think and works as a software engineer. For example, one of my favorite activities we did early on, was to try to explain to an alien in pure logical form how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. This might sound silly, but in fact, the exercise is highly instructive of the process of writing code. Another important learning experience was that of learning how to collaborate with other developers. Inter-personal skills may not seem like something one would associate with coding, but it is in fact an absolutely essential skill. In terms of cons of the program, it was probably a bit on the high end in terms of cost, and it is not possible to deduct the tuition on your taxes (I tried) but at the end of the day, this program was worth every penny. Oh, and one last thing, after you've completed the program, you will receive the most amazing support in helping you find a job. The Flatiron School is highly connected in the industry and will be able to connect you with numerous companies and opportunities.

I attended Flatiron School as part of the school's partnership with NYC Talent Pipeline, which offered a full scholarship to underemployed/unemployed NYC residents (BK00 in the house). My experience at Flatiron School was extremely challenging (get ready to learn at an intense pace) but the reward has been tremendous. Not just in terms of job opportunities but friendships forged with really smart and compassionate people. If you are considering a non-traditional path to a career in software development, I would encourage you to apply to FIS. PS: Shoutout to Jackie, Kevin, and Joe who together make the career service team AMAZING. These folks will HUSTLE for you and will ensure you get a good job post-graduation. You still have to carry your weight eg: updating portfolio, following-up with folks they introduce you to, etc. -

An awesome program
I graduated from Flatiron School almost a 2 years ago now. I was in the second iOS class they offered at the school, learning how to develop Objective-C for mobile. Flatiron was a very rewarding 3 month process that helped me gain the valuable skills needed to work full time as a software developer.

I’m a recent graduate from Flatiron’s iOS Development course. I came into the program with zero programming knowledge and determined to change my career. Flatiron’s education was crucial in my future success as a software developer. At Flatiron I learned to develop applications with a team and individually. I currently have two applications in the app store, and developing my third app as an iOS Developer freelancer.
Flatiron has build an environment where creativity and learning is at the forefront of every activity. This energy to learn is felt throughout the halls, common rooms, and class rooms. Learning to code is hard, it requires 100% commitment to the program and an amazing team of teachers / educators. At Flatiron you will not only learn to code with the latest programming languages and techniques, you will also learn to think critically, to solve complex problems by breaking down complexity. You will learn how to continue to educate yourself after the program—technology is an ever growing field and to stay current you must keep up with it.
During my time at Flatiron, I have had the fastest personal growth in the shortest time.
Thank you to the entire team at Flatiron for all of the hard work you do to make us into great developers. -

Learn to [love] code

I attended Flatiron School's Learn Verified online web development course from February to October 2016. Overall, it was a great experience! The key difference I noticed between Flatiron and other bootcamps/schools is that Flatiron focuses on building a love and passion for coding while building the necessary skills to make a career switch, not just churning out people to get jobs.
The instructors were very helpful and the material was clear and concise. There were some lessons that could have used some improvement and a deeper dive (such as the Angular material near the end) but there was plenty of material and it was written in such a way that made it easy to grasp a lot concepts, even the complex ones. Working on test driven labs was a huge plus for applying the concepts that we learned. The student community is a very active as well - having a community of other learners as well as Learn Experts available on Flatiron's online chat for most of the day to help with coding is a huge benefit too - and it's only improved since I graduated! The post-graduation career support (preparing for interviews, networking, and job referrals) was excellent too.
While the online web development course does require a lot of focus and self discipline (since you work at your own pace), overall I would highly recommend Flatiron School to anyone who wants to learn to love code (as well as make a career switch!).

I was lucky to be in the first Flatiron class and since then the trajectory of my life has been altered in ways I couldn't have imagined. A rewarding career is the minimum students walk away from Flatiron with. The program also provides a supportive community and a transformative experience. As a graduate, I was able to get the job of my choice at Carrot Creative where I had a blast. Since then I've returned to Flatiron School where I work on Learn.co.
I'm proud to call myself a Flatiron School graduate when I see the school continue to push itself to improve with better learning tools and become more accessible via its Fellowship programs.
Simply put, attending Flatiron School was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

The Flatiron School is hands down the best school you could ever choose. Everything about the program beats any other program's offering by far -- from the instructors, course content, the other students, the culture, and more. I know many people that have done other programs and they don't finish nearly as strong of developers as those that have gone through Flatiron's program. Given how well Flatiron prepared me, I'm now running an early stage startup that I've built from foundations I learned there.

Before Flatiron School I tried the self-learning approach a few times but never got over the proverbial hump. Flatiron School helped me learn to learn. I now work at a museum on multiple applications in several languages/frameworks. It worked out! I'm leaving only 4 stars in Job Assistance because as a student in the second cohort (early 2013) immersive programs were new and the school was still figuring it out.

Passion for music + Flatiron School => chance to be a developer at Spotify

It's an amazing time to work in tech, but this journey is not for those not willing to fall down repeatedly and get right back up. I joined Flatiron's web development immersive in its early stages (3rd session in summer of 2013) and it was an intense experience of gaining the superpower to build anything with code.
What Flatiron gives you is a chance to focus all your energy for 12 weeks in learning and building as much as you can, with individuals who are as talented, diverse, ambitious, multi-skilled, and crazy as you are.
It is really this new model of immersive and collaborative learning that will drive you up the rather steep hill that is going from not being able to write a "for loop" to building whole applications, together with your peers.
It was about at the 8 week mark of 12 weeks where for me everything coalesced and I started to see much further in terms of what I could do with code, with Ruby on Rails. In that next week, my team and I built BikeWithFriends, a CitiBike gamification web app that won Hack of the Month at the NY Tech Meetup in August 2013, which we got to present to a crowd of over +800, and we were still coding students.
Since then, I've worked at Huge, an awesome digital agency in DUMBO with amazing people. Now I am looking forward to my new journey at Spotify in 2017, which will marry my longstanding passion for music with my growing skills in technology.
I think to succeed in the field of web development in 2017 is to learn to think like an engineer where your domain is technology and your tools are your programming languages, your development environment, and the knowledge base of your peers and the wider tech community.
Flatiron for me was only a jumping off point, and you will only see your abilities and knowledge double every few months for the first few years as you start working professionally. It's really about building up core skills in programming and continuing to become more sophisticated and refined as you go along.
The best thing is that a good employer will expect that you are coming in with junior programming skills and will give you space and time to grow and mature. Like any other meaningful endeavor, there is no magic bullet. Time and energy/effort will result in increasing skills, which will make you a more valuable team member until you can start mentoring and leading teams/projects all on your own.
I think it does help to do as much pre-work as you can, especially if you don't come from a tech background. Particularly knowing whether spending a lot of time staring at the computer screen deciphering where your code went wrong (and what your machine is trying to tell you) is something you can put up with and even enjoy day in and day out.
Great troubleshooting skills is really what determines how much longevity you will have in this field in my opinion. Always review how you and your peers fix issues and code errors. That will be the difference between finishing your work on time and being able to help your teammates or getting increasingly frustrated and falling behind, eventually becoming a liability on your project.
Also, the program is structured in such a way that each week builds upon the previous week's material. Make sure even if you don't 100% understand why the material is necessary that you can still get through the exercises on your own starting from scratch aka "the blank screen". I definitely realized I was out of my depth understanding some aspects of Object Oriented Programming in the early weeks and just did the exercise over and over again until I could get through the entire thing without referencing another team's solution. The understanding came in pieces and formed a whole eventually, but building the intuition and "muscle memory" of what I was doing was key in getting there.
Practice writing all your coding basics like looping through and getting data in and out of arrays and hashes so that stuff doesn't bog you down when you're doing the really important stuff, like designing an algorithm to count the frequency of any word in the text of Moby Dick. Speed and accuracy does kind of matter here. It would be like trying to learn algebra/trigonometry when you have trouble with basic addition/subtraction/multiplication/division.
Flatiron was the best program I believe when I started (curriculum, instructors, job interview and placement help) and has only gotten more refined as time goes on. Listen to your teachers, take the advice of your career advisors, don't get too overwhelmed by the job interview and placement portion of the program or your salary. It's a long journey to be an excellent developer/engineer. Any opportunity to learn and grow will be a good one and be in it for the long haul. It's an awesome time to be in tech.

Best decision I ever made

Back in 2013, I nervously left my job to join the 4th class at Flatiron School. I'd met a few alumni and the interview process gave me confidence in the decision, but it was still a big move. From the very first day of class, I knew I'd made one of the best decisions of my life.
I'd done a little programming on the side before attending, but the amount I learned in the first few days along put all of that to shame. The instruction was incredible, and it was amazing to see how quickly everybody in the class was able to start building really amazing things. Everybody had an intense curiosity, and pushed one another to stretch what we were learning and dig deeper into the material we were covering.
Speaking of which, perhaps the best part of Flatiron School was the wonderful group of people I got to learn with. Every single person in the class was passionate about learning how to code, and I'm so happy to say I made life-long friends while taking this journey together.
Flatiron School is an inclusive, passionate community that I'm extremely proud to be a part of. If you're considering taking the plunge like I did, you can do no better than Flatiron!

Going to Flatiron was the best education I received and most life changing experiences I've had to date!
Prior to attending Flatiron, I was a marketing manager at a not-for-profit. Knowing that I wanted to make a career change and interest of diversifying the tech space, I was beyond fortunate to have my organization's support when they sponsored me to attend Flatiron. In addition to sponsoring me, upon return, I would come back full time as a jr. software engineer!
Now being back at my organization, my life as a jr. dev is the most fulfilling and enjoyable work I've ever done in my life. I love my life as a jr. dev and am excited for what the future holds - all opportunities I would never have dreamed of without attending the Flatiron School!
While at Flatiron, I was inspired by not only the instructors and quality of education, but also by the community at large. I couldn't have imagined a better community and atmosphere to learn such difficult material - everyone was like a family and so encouraging. I really felt the mentality that we were 'in it together' - which is so important when going through such an intense course. There were so many resources available when I felt stuck - both emotionally and academically. I loved the focus not only on learning code, but building and maintaining such a nurturing, challenging, and supportive community that pushed you to be the best programmer AND person. I learned so much not only about web development but about myself as well. -

I went through the Web Development Immersive at the Flatiron School in the summer of 2014. It was a fantastic experience that I have recommended to friends and family.
The course prepared me for my software engineering career in two big ways:
- It helped me learn enough about web development to get my foot in the door at my first junior dev job.
- It helped me understand how to continue to grow my knowledge of software development and computer science as my career progressed well beyond graduation.
I strongly recommend the Flatiron School for anyone serious about switching careers to web development.

Flatiron School literally saved my life. I was floundering around in the music industry going from gig to gig wondering would I would do for the rest of my life.
After a friend suggested coding, I began researching bootcamp programs and quickly came to the conclusion that easiest slam-dunk would be the Flatiron School.
Within 8 days of graduating I was hired as a developer at a prominent tech company in New York and my career prospects seem great.
There are four main components that really distinguished my experience:
Classmates
My cohort was filled with people who were there to work hard, be supportive and encouraging, and learn as much as they could. I learned with some phenomenally smart and creative people. Don't underestimate this experience - you need a strong support group when going through Flatiron.
Most of my classmates would agree that each student got out what they put in. Flatiron will do the best they can to guide you, but it is not handed on a silver platter. You have to do the work.
Curriculum
Flatiron's web-development course is a well thought out introduction to coding for the internet. While the course is based around Rails, now that I'm employed I realize that Rails - like every technology we use - is just a tool for getting a job done. Flatiron places great emphasis on teaching concepts, not just the tools. My job is 100% javascript but it doesn't matter - they taught me the basic concepts about programming, the internet, and problem solving I needed to get my job and succeed as an early developer.I gave this category 4 stars instead of 5, as my course did not go over any front end frameworks besides jQuery. But fear not! Front end has become a much bigger part of the curriculum.
Teachers
I'll simply say that the instructors were knowledgable and helpful. They really want to make sure you are getting the help you need. Towards the end things shift and they start to take the training wheels off and start helping you to figure things out on your own. A really valuable skill in the workplace.
Placements Team
The job placements team is professional and tireless. Between the placements team and my own networking, I had something like 7 interviews my first week after Flatiron. Beyond that, the placements program does a great job of preparing you for interviews - mock cultural and tech interviews, alumni panels, student profile pages, and individual support as you go through connecting with companies down to negotiating an offer. The help the gave to so many of my classmates is almost worth the tuition by itself.
Summary
For those considering a bootcamp, I have to reiterate - getting into Flatiron is not a golden ticket. It worked for me and most if not all of my cohort, but I worked harder at it than I had anything in my life that I can remember. They will give you the tools you need to succeed, but part of the reason their track record is good is because they select people willing to give 100%. They've created this atmosphere of people pushing themselves and each other to be better. If you're serious about changing your life and becoming a developer, Flatiron is an excellent way to go. -

I just recently graduated from the Web Development Immersive course and will start searching for jobs soon. Overall attending Flatiron School was one of the best decisions I've made, based on:
1. Top notch curriculum, and labs that help you learn the material
2. Classmates are all great people who challenge you to bring your A-game every day
3. Career Services pros who know what they are doing and generous with their time and expertise
I feel like I'm in a good place after graduation, and can keep learning on my own. :) Overall coming to Flatiron was a great decision!

I was in the first batch of iOS dev program at Flatiron. I came from an engineering background, but had no prior experience in programming. By the end of the program, I was making iOS apps and shortly after that, I had a job as an iOS developer in a startup. Joe was an amazing instructor. We had people with different levels of programming experience in our group, and he handled that really well. I got my first job through Flatiron School. They help with interview prep, putting students in touch with companies and career advice in general. Infact, I recently moved to another company and they helped me in the interview process this time too! The folks at Flatiron school are doing a great job and I hope a lot more people benefit from the program like I did.

How I co-founded a Series A-funded business

I attended Flatiron School in its 3rd cohort and went on to build a successful startup as its technical co-founder.
Flatiron School was instrumental to my success.
Here's what I learned at Flatiron School that is unique and valuable:
- Coding is fun -- I learned programming in Flatiron's social environment -- where people get excited about what they're doing -- and work together through thick and thin
- Being a great programmer is building the right thing -- put aside the anxiety that other people can code faster and better. Truly great programmers understand what they're building and build the right thing. Flatiron emphasizes this through teamwork.
- Perseverance -- solving difficult problems is what programmers do. Flatiron fosters an environment where you can fail safely and learn from that failure.
- Self-love -- remember what you struggled with 4 weeks ago. We're always growing as programmers, and Flatiron does well at reminding students of this truth.
- Get it done -- there's some intense timelines for major projects at Flatiron, but they ease you into it by having you deliver projects from Day 1. This builds confidence and teaches focus.
- Getting help -- you develop friendships with peers and also mentor relationships with instructors. These are people you can go to as you keep learning and growing after bootcamp.
- Getting a Job -- Flatiron taught me how to constantly learn programming skills on my own and present myself to employers so they hire me. Yep, I got my first job through Flatiron's career services.
I loved the Flatiron School experience, would do it again.

Great coding program
The teachers are knowledgeable, supportive, and genuinely care for student success. Flatiron staff are equally amazing in extending attention and care for the students outside of coding.

Excellent Career Change Program

I graduated from the Web Immersive in December 2015 (web-0915). After finishing the program, I went on to help teach the online program at Flatiron School. Even though I currently work at Flatiron, I will still try and give my honest review of the program.
Before starting at Flatiron I was working as a mechanical engineer and had no solid programing experience. I had followed along some programing tutorials for iOS and Android apps as well as gone through some short online programs for Ruby. I knew I was looking to make a complete career change and I was really looking to start from a beginner level.
Flatiron School caught my eye for two main reasons, their focus on team work and their excellent jobs report allowing students to get a job after a short 3 month program. For me, the Flatiron School experience completely lived up to what I was expecting and looking for.
The pre-work that is required before the course allows the students and instructors to start on day 1 with a bunch of basic concepts covered and with everyone on the same page. This really helps the accelerated learning process. Throughout the course, the instructors really impressed upon us the importance of working together and trying to find solutions on our own while also being there to support us when we needed it. I spent a bunch of time pair programing with other students which really exposed me to a variety of different ways to solve the same problem. This mindset has been really helpful since leaving the program when I need to carry on the learning process on my own.
The curriculum was presented in a way that I learned how to build important tools such as Active Record and Rails before I actually got to use the tools. This gave me a much deeper understanding of them and a better idea of where to look when things break (and things always break).
Even though I ultimately ended up coming to work for Flatiron, the Career Services department did a great job and helping me make sure I was job hunt ready. They also helped show me the tools I needed to open up various job opportunities (places to look, how to spend my time, how to leverage my network...).
All in all I felt this was an excellent experience and I couldn't have asked for anything better.

I could not ask for a better experience. The teachers are knowledgeable and supportive. They really do care about your success. Students who didn't feel like they were keeping up with the pace of the curriculum were given extra time to go over the material at their speed after the graduation. Career center and student support are very helpful and always available. The only thing that I didn't enjoy was feelings Fridays. But it did help many other students I think. Anyway, Flatiron school is so awesome I got a tattoo of its logo

Flatiron School is a perfect amalgamation of skillful staff and course work along with the most effective and supporting community of developers. I graduated the iOS development program in May 2015 and the was immediately able to start my career as a software developer specializing in iOS. The Teachers and TAs were awesome and the Business Development team was extremely helpful in the process of introduction with hiring companies.
It is one of the best decisions I've ever made. 3 months of extreme hard work pays off at Flatiron School. I'll highly recommend someone who's looking to choose software development as a career choice.

I graduated from the Flatiron School in-person web immersive in May 2015 (Ruby-007 cohort).
I was one of the few hired right out of my cohort onto the school’s engineering team as an apprentice developer. Now it’s a year and half later, and I couldn’t be happier or more proud of where I’m at today. I went from zero professional coding experience to apprentice developer in three months, with a promotion to Developer I by month ten.
That’s a complete career change from a non-technical role in the fine art world to full-time fullstack developer in under a year. Yeah, kind of insane. Also yeah, my family’s pretty happy about that upgrade.
I’d done my research before applying, and I knew from talking to alumni and reading the annual jobs reports that this is what Flatiron does. If you put the work in, they’ll help you get these crazy good outcomes. Plus they’re one of a handful of coding schools that partners with the City of New York and the White House EQUIP program to offer fellowships and financing for under-represented groups. I knew if these institutions trusted them, I could too.
My trust was well-placed. My classmates were some of the most impressive, amazing people I’ve ever met, and our instructors were incredibly dedicated, putting in extra hours to make sure everyone had the support they needed to keep up with the fast pace of the course. The career services team are super heroes; with their help, I landed +5 interviews after graduating, with three full-time offers.
But most importantly, thanks to Flatiron, now I can do good work that makes me happy from almost anywhere in the world for the rest of my life. And that kind of beautiful life is well worth the (ongoing) effort. -

After Flatiron, more than just a web developer

The highlight of my Flatiron education was the outcome. After graduating from the on-campus web development immersive program, I was hired into a data scientist position and asked to immediately learn Python and other data science packages and tools. While the shift was initially daunting, after a mere few weeks I found myself already comfortable with the new programming language and libraries needed to conduct industry-standard analysis. The fact that I was able to smoothly transition to a non-web career in technology after Flatiron speaks volumes not only as to the quality of programming education, but also the mission of the school -- at Flatiron, you truly learn to code and love the trade, not just succeed in tasks expected of a junior web developer.
From a curriculum perspective, most of Flatiron was a fantastic experience. The Learn platform was effective at encouraging learning and keeping track of process. My only qualm with the program was towards the end, during project time; independence was stressed, and I felt that I needed more support from the instructors who were sometimes unavailable to help. Also at the end the campus was getting quite crowded, with 3 cohorts filling the space. I'd recommend that Flatiron either expand the campus or cut down on the number of cohorts offered at once.

Great place to learn!
Flatiron School was a great experience for me. It gave me an opportunity to learn and develop my coding skills, and ultimately led to more career opportunities. They really helped set me up with the tools I needed to become a better programmer. Flatiron school's curriculum is challenging and really forces students to think outside the box to solve complex programming problems.

I had a good career before Flatiron School. I'd studied accounting and gotten a job at PwC where I was making good money, had a ton of job stability, and was moving up in the ranks. That was what I thought I should be looking for when I was in college, hence the major I had chosen. The problem was that I discovered I didn't really like accounting. I also really didn't like working 80 hours a week.
I thought I was taking a huge risk by throwing all my experience away to completely change careers, especially after having invested several years at it. I thought I'd have to start at the bottom and work my way up again. Much to my amazement though, my first job out of the Flatiron School paid $10,000 more than I was making as a Senior at PwC. I also work only 40 hours a week, which is still mindblowing to me, and best of all, I actually love what I do for a living now. Who knew Sunday doesn't have to fill you with dread? -

Best Decision I Ever Made

It's been a almost a year since I graduated from the Flatiron school and I can wholeheartedly say attending the Flatiron School was the best decision I made in my life: I walked out of flatiron school not only with a new set of skills, but with an amazing community and circle of friends.
Prior to attending, I worked as a producer in news. I attended the full-time web development immersive and now work as a software engineer at a big news station. I get to build the products I used as a producer and combine both my passions: news & tech. The Flatiron school helped me take my first steps in to a field I love - tech - and armed me with the skills to succeed as a developer.
They really care about your success and put effort in to helping you find a job after graduation. The people I graduated with are all doing amazing things in the tech scene and it is inspiring to see how much they have accomplished in such a short amount of time.
I can't even find the words to express how thankful I am to this school. I love my job and am excited for what the future holds. The future is very bright and so much of the credit goes to the flatiron school. If you are thinking of applying, don't think twice!

I wouldn't be where I am today if I had not decided to leave my old career and attend the Flatiron School.
I was a Finance major with Information Systems Minor in college. After college, I worked in the banking industry in New York for several years. I left that job to work at a startup in product for a brief time. All that experience contributed to my decision to attend the Flatiron School. I would challenege anyone thinking about making the switch to think hardly about the decision to decide if they would really like a career in software.
After making the decision though, the Flatiron School comes in to adequately prepare developers for the professional world. The curriculum is challenging, and often throughout the course it can be overwhelming. The instructors and TAs are they to provide support but they also encourage students to figure things out. I would say the most important thing I learned at the Flatiron School was how to learn. As a software developer I am constantly challenged to learn new technologies and domains. Because of my experience at the Flatiron School I am not scared of that.
Overall I am so thankful for the experience. I have made friends from my cohort that I still talk to today. It is so helpful to ask them for advice and ideas based on what they have been working on at their respective companies. I am also glad that it has allowed me to be so flexible. Since graduating, I have moved from New York to San Francisco finally landing in Denver. I was able to easily work remote for a portion of time as well.

I am very thankful for the material I learned and the people I met at Flatiron. I attended Flatiron from Jan 2016 - April 2016 thanks to the NYC Tech Talent Pipeline Mobile Dev Corps Scholarship. The material I learned over those 4-months really changed my life and is the reason I am a developer now.
Background:
I was a Math major in college and had taken a number of CS classes. I was already familiar with Object Oriented concepts in C++, but had no experience in mobile dev. Prior to Flatiron, I was an Assistant Buyer.
Flatiron Experience:
I would say my memories of Flatiron are mostly positive, with a few less positive memories peppered in. The curriculum was challenging, but not overwhelmingly so. My instructor at the time was a bit of a rambler and the lectures often took longer than they should have, but he was thorough and smart and very helpful. The TA's were also very helpful, though sometimes they were swamped with other students questions and you'd be left without any way to proceed. Final projects were definitly a bit of a roller-coaster. It would have been great to have more guidance and mentorship - for my cohort, each team had a mentor from a specific company and we were encouraged to build something somewhat related to that company. My team was able to make something, but it took an extra week because we really had no idea how to plan out our work or how to scope it or delegate tasks. There really was not enough guidance on the how. But we learned a lot and ended up with something we were able to show at interviews that was in the App Store.
Career services:
They're really smart and kind and I cannot say anything bad about them. They were responsive to all of my emails and always calmed me down when I was stressed about the job hunt. To this day, they email me to check in on me and I could not appreciat them enough.
Everyone at Flatiron is kind and it feels like they are invested in your success. They provide you with the materials to change your career, but you are responsible for putting in the work. I really didn't believe that you could become a developer after 3 months but Flatiron provides a strong foundation for begining your career and when you go out and get a job, you have enough knowledge to fill in the gaps.

Ruby 003

I was apart of the Ruby 03 winter 2013 web development in person class. My story is alittle different then the typical flatiron student. I had graduated college with a EE degree in 2006 and while I had taken coding classes in college, I realized that after 7 years of being in the electonics industry; my technical skills were not what they used to be. I needed new skills for what was happening in the software industry because software was becoming more and more apart of our daily lives because of smart phones and web apps. I moved from the west coast back to NY, which is where I grew up, I moved into my parents basement and decided immerse myself into code for the next 4 months. I was very surpise by the technical depth that we cover over 3 months and was even more surpirse by the caliber of students that were in my class. They were all smart, diligent and some of the most fun people I've ever been around. I loved the fact that we built a community over the past 3 month and were all willing to help each other code and learn. I learned alot from all the instructors and the friends I made in class. To me the magic of the flatiron school is not the 3 months you learn about ruby, rails, linux etc. its the ability to think in a way, where you can accept failure and keep trying, where your not scaried to learn something new and you develop the personal skills to work with other developers.
