“AI” is the word of the summer, so we’re rounding up all the news we saw about how generative AI tools will support and expand the tech workforce… not deplete it. After a quiet first half of 2023, we finally saw news about recent coding bootcamp fundraises and acquisitions. We learned of two new ways you would fund your coding bootcamp experience: through Americorps or with your 529 account.  Plus, we’ll let you know about the 3 new coding bootcamps that we added to the Course Report directory in July.

2 FUNDRAISES + ACQUISITION NEWS

  • EdTech Review reported that V School raised an undisclosed amount in growth funding from Decathlon Capital Partners.
  • Axcel announced that it’s acquiring online IT training provider, ExitCertified.
  • According to Silicon India, the edtech company, Upgrad is reportedly looking to acquire a majority stake in the US edtech firm, Udacity.
  • CyberWarfare Labs received a seed funding deal with UK-based angel investor and cyber entrepreneur, Sumit Siddharth. Sumit was also named as the new director of the company. 
  • Fullstack Academy appointed Nelis Parts as their new CEO and Mark Moran as their new CMO. 
  • Aaron McCullough was named as the new Chief Product Officer of edX.

THE RISE OF AI IN TECH JOBS

  • The Morning Brew team did a sweep of the recent reports about what AI means for tech employment.
  • Andrew Tarantola wrote a piece for Engadget which concludes that ultimately, we can’t be sure yet what generative coding systems will eventually become or how it might impact the tech industry.

UPSKILLING & CAREER CHANGES IN 2023

  • HR Dive pointed out that the turbulent economic climate is pushing many workers to look for professional development opportunities.
  • Marie Claire provided insights on how women are upskilling these days through bespoke tech apprenticeships.
  • Google is funding a $20M effort to create free cybersecurity training programs. 
  • According to the CBRE’s annual Scoring Tech Talent report, the Bay Area remains the top tech employer with the highest salaries. Check out our video Q&A with LearningFuze about how to land a developer role in the very competitive SoCal tech job market!
  • Technical.ly asked Google Career Certificate alum Kile Johnson for their UX design job search insights. 

APPRENTICESHIPS + AMERICORPS

  • HR Dive reported on a new bipartisan bill aimed at modernizing the National Apprenticeship Act. 
  • Coding Temple announced that it is now an AmeriCorps School of National Service, which means that students can now leverage your AmeriCorps Education Award to attend a Coding Temple bootcamp. 
  • A recent Glassdoor survey says intern satisfaction remains below pre-pandemic levels across the board, but for tech specifically, only 42% of tech interns would recommend their internship to others. 

NEW CODING BOOTCAMPS

  • Stony Brook University has partnered with Springboard to offer online bootcamps.
  • The University of Manchester has partnered with HyperionDev.
  • CodeClan announced that it has partnered with Flatiron School so it can offer on-demand, self-paced bootcamps.
  • Resilient Coders has closed their Pittsburgh campus.

Jess spoke with Curtis Schlak, the VP of Academics at Hack Reactor, about the new AI tool, GitHub Copilot to create a beginner’s guide on how developers can implement it into their workflow.

Liz published a blog post about how to pay for a coding bootcamp with a 529 account. Eryn Schultz, a financial educator, weighed in on this and ultimately concluded that you can use 529 withdrawals on an accredited bootcamp like NYC Data Science Academy.
