Minimum Skill Level Elementary programming knowledge Placement Test No Interview No Start Date None scheduled Cost $199 Class size N/A Location OnlineIntroduction to Python for Data Science is a 3-hour online workshop that teaches students how to use Python to extract, clean, and analyze data. This workshop is taught by a live instructor, so students have the opportunity to ask questions and receive feedback as they learn. Students will gain hands-on practice using Python for data science and leave the course ready to work on their own data science projects. Students who take our Intro to Python workshop qualify for a special tuition credit on our 8-week Data Science Foundations course for the cost of this workshop. Python has developed over decades into a versatile and hugely popular programming language for several reasons. It’s become an essential tool for data science and other scientific computing tasks, largely due to a thriving ecosystem of open-source libraries for analysis and visualization of large datasets. This course introduces students to working with Python packages that are commonly used for data science tasks like data manipulation and machine learning. First, we’ll cover basic Python syntax - showcasing the language’s intuitive code style and broad capabilities. We’ll demonstrate how students can easily start working with Python in Jupyter Notebook, an interactive computing environment that allows one to write and run live code - providing students with hands-on practice using Python for data science. Then, we’ll introduce students to Python’s powerful packages, extensions to the language that make it one of the most capable programming languages today. Students will gain familiarity with the Python packages focused on data-related tasks that form the Python data science "stack". Takeaways Ability to write and run Python code for data analysis in data science notebooks (data cleaning and reformatting, exploration, analysis). An introduction to the fundamental open-source data science libraries in Python and their roles, strengths, and weaknesses for data analysis (including: NumPy, Matplotlib, scikit-learn, & more). This is a hands-on workshop. Students will be immersed in code, and develop scripts & notebooks, which they can take home for future use. Pre-requisites Basic technical ability, comfort with computers, and desire to learn new tools. Minimal experience using computers for analysis or repeated tasks (like formulas or macros in Excel). No installation necessary! All course material is online - students only need internet access and a laptop with an internet browser (like Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox).

- Feels like a scam!- 5/11/2018Anonymous • Applicant
I was a PhD student in physics who decided to switch to data science. I applied to both Inisght and the Data Incubator. The experience of the two bootcamps is very different. At Insight, they come across as very kind and helpful. Genuinly trying to get you some experience. While at Data Incubator, they are non-responsive and money oriented. You have to do a huge amount of work to get in, before even getting a single email from a coordinator. When you are selected as a semi-finalist, there is not much information about the next step, but they basically want you to have a full project ready to propose and talk about. After you have done all this work, more than onsite-interviews to data scientist at Google, you might end up with the "great news" that you have been selected as a scolar, where you have to pay $16,000 for the session. This is more than 2 semesters at a prestigious college. To me it seems like a scam, but that is just my oppinion. You will to better of taking online courses and traveling to Bahamas for this money!
Good luck on your transition!
- Scam- 1/20/2018Anonymous • Applicant • Course: Data Incubator Fellowship • Campus: San Francisco
All good review you can find about them on the web are very similar in style and were written by the same person or a handful of people. The curriculum is mediocre, to put it mildly. The promises of financial aid are lies. Once you complete all their assignments they will ask you to pay at least $18,000. And finally, to get the assignments done you have to possess enough knowledge that will certainly get you a job as a data scientist. Sheer waste of time and money.
- Worth the application effort- 8/17/2016Anonymous • PhD • Campus: San Francisco
I went through the complete application process which involved several coding challenges, project proposal, and interviews, and thankfully, got in the program. Although their whole admission process has plenty of room for improvements (e.g. solution submission is a bit cumbersome, no contact person nor phone # for assistance), it takes about six to eight weeks, and a fair amount of work from the applicant; yet in hindsight, I think the whole process was instructive and helped sharpen both my programming, data analysis, and presentation skills. If you're phd academic refugee looking for a switch into data science industry, the data incubator is certainly worth a try. Good luck!
- Warning: Not a path for changing fields- 8/11/2016Anonymous • Applicant
Here's a warning: They don't seem interested in training people from scratch, despite what they claim. They appear only interested in training people who already have a pretty good knowledge base and could possibly already get a good job in the field, based on the application process. And their application process is amateurishly executed at best. The program itself might be just fine (it seems to be well regarded by those who do get in), but they seem like they're probably just trying to get a financial piece of the pie for demand for these positions and working off desperation for recent PhDs trying to get a job in a marketplace that is extremely hostile to on-the-job training.
