    Disappointing course

For 11.500, you get an airconditioned classroom with wifi and an online textbook to follow. At the first few weeks of the course, we were around 40 people... The textbook itself is okay, but gets more chaotic at the Python part. The instructors usually appeared an hour later, than the students, but except for the first weeks, they hardly did any lectures. There were some breakout of some of the problems, but that is all. The instructors themselves were nice and friendly, knowledgeable, b...

Does not prepare you to be a developer

Their online text based curriculum jumped from one topic to the next leaving you wondering if its going to be covered more in depth later, which it is not. There is no instructor. Instead, to answer your questions, there are two "mentors" ,  which are prior students of Next Academy, per class that arrive around 10:30, even though the day is meant to begin at 9:30. They then lunch from 12:30 sometimes until 2:30. They do try to give some instruction via a 30 minute "Breakout" from time to t...

    Not good

Dont get fooled by the heavy marketing campaign. Lets get the honest review

The teaching method is let you learn by yourself. If didnt know anything ask. lol.

It does stated that not programming background needed. but it is really bad.

They just provide a space and thats it. Not that great as for the amount of money you pay (RM11,800). They took alot of students also. more than 30 students for my batch.

They should teaches us everyday, everyday got l...

    Maybe, maybe not

This course has roughly 25 students per intake, costs RM10,000 per person.

They are split in two groups, and each group has 2 mentors.
The mentors alternate, and 1 mentor guides a group at a time.
Each mentor will be pre-occupied with guiding those who understand and almost understand on their own.
Mentors are okay and are past graduates themselves (mostly but have some more experienced) but is too few to cope.

Each day, there will be a few tasks for you ...

It was a great experience for the past 5 weeks

It was a great experience for the past 5 weeks. I'm so grateful and kinda sad at the same time at the end of the course.

Place - Next Academy has the conducive and comfortable for a learning course. The location is strategic and next to 7e and makan places. Might need to improve on the audio at the back. Maybe put extra speakers.

Syllabus - Overall, it was really worth it. High-quality speakers and well structured. Only the reason that stops me from publishing any camp...

    suit me

this suited my style of learning better than reading from the textbook . some people may or may not appreciate this style of teaching but we all need to be open minded about it because I started hating it and loved it subsequently.

learning together was great though sometimes some people just like to compete with others. fortunately the better ones in my group are open to share their knowledge.

some told me that they were surprised to be good at this as opposed to their...

    Hey!

I'm glad that despite facing something super new, unfamiliar and tough, you conquer this challenge! And it's awesome that it is an amazing experience for you!

The best part about this bootcamp is the friends you've made and the mentors who eventually became your friends too!

Code on, and share your progress, your stories, startups and your work with us. We are featuring our students' projects here: https://www.nextacademy.com/graduates-project-showcase/

We are now doubling our efforts to provide more exposure for all our students. This would mean: connecting graduates to employers, to potential partners and some times even to investors.

Do come back for our community events too! We have tech talks, entrepreneur talks and all.

Always remember that the value of the bootcamps do not stop even after your 9 weeks with us.

FYI, this year (2016) we have introduced iOS mobile development bootcamp and digital marketing bootcamp. Keep us in mind if you know anyone who is looking into hiring talent from us. :)

    Deceptive marketing

Be wary of Next's deceptive marketing to lure programming enthusiast to join their overly hyped up bootcamp. The fake 5 stars reviews in a single day above pretty much sums up their ethicality.

    This was painful.

I won't call this review by you unfair because clearly, you are upset and you have the right to be. In fact, I'm sorry you feel this way.

Our entire team works extremely hard to empower people. Most people we hire are extremely passionate about education. Our single goal is to empower people. Most great coders much prefer to work in a tech company than an education company. The only reason why we are here is because we want to help people achieve what they seek to accomplish.

I do, however, want to challenge your accusation on our ethical standards. We don't do fake reviews. We have graduated 300 over students and we do reach out to them for reviews. And many of them are working at great companies like AirAsia, Digi, Maxis, KFIT, Mindvalley and more. Ask them, ask their CTOs who hired them. They are truly amazing. Many of them are also building their own MVPs, taking on the entrepreneurial journey. We have students in various top regional accelerators like MaGIC, DBS, and more.

If you want to reach out to me, please email me at josh@nextacademy.com
No hard feelings. I just want to buy you coffee to understand what made you this upset.

    Not a fan

Some of the mentors are incompetent in answering questions and most of them are pretty young who has completed the bootcamp themselves in the prior year. Therefore i wouldnt blame them for not being well equipped with the adequate knowledge to actually teach. But why would you pay a hefty load of money for incompetent mentors and attend classes from Mondays to Fridays when everything is self-teaching yourself on a stupid learning portal. They will actually tell you "this is the best way to...

    Hi,

I'm Josh, the founder. I'm sorry you felt this way. Let me address some of the matters.

    1. Self-teaching
I'm glad we are on the same page that this could actually be a better model of education than being taught the way most schools teach these days.
I think the real issue here was the fine line that was difficult to balance. The difficult bit was always how much do you leave a student to think for themselves and when to actually guide them.
We have came up with more clearly defined processes to help mentors address this matter.

On top of that, we have also tweaked our class set-up. We still have the same 10-12 student mentor ratio, but we now actually physically divide 10-12 students to a dedicated mentor they will stick through to the end of the course. This has solved a lot of the problems some students faced of being neglected and being left alone.

    2. Inexperience mentors
This is the real problem I want to address. I'm not sure which intake you were in. We have since changed things around. In the past, we had a very short notice period for mentors looking to quit NEXT Academy. During those rare moments, I stay up late nights, panicking on making sure we have sufficient mentors for you guys.
While manpower shortage will always be an issue in the tech industry, we have finally managed to develop a strict policy that works.
We have some of the greatest mentors who have built apps that handle millions of dollar in transactions. We also have junior mentors that we hire from our graduate pool.
Most people think that hiring from our graduate pool is a bad idea. But I do it intentionally. We have the luxury of selecting the top 1% from our graduate pool of hundreds of graduates to be trained up to be great teachers and coders. Coupled with the fact that we have seen how capable they are in a 9 weeks full time intensive learning environment. This allows us to hire the cream of the crop.

We, now, have an mentor in training program where these past graduates will shadow a senior experienced instructor and at the same time spend 50% of their other time coding production systems as a contract staff with our partnered tech companies.

    Conclusion

We have many successful graduates who are working as software engineers at great companies in our region like AirAsia, Maxis, Digi, KFIT, Grab, Mindvalley. These companies has an extremely high level of standards of who they admit. In fact, many of them are still working there today after a year.

I know this reply to your feedback will probably do you very little good. That is why, I would love if you would send me an email at josh@nextacademy.com to see what we can do to help you now.

    I liked it!

I could have learn how to code at home. But that will take me way longer than 9 weeks. Mentors are helpful, me and my coursemates have a small community to solve problems and work on interesting things together. Overall it was an amazing experience to me.

    A great experience

I had a really challenging but great experience here at NEXT Academy. The first few weeks was tough for me but thanks to the kind mentors I was able to solve most of the problems.

Now I can confidently code apps and it's all thanks to NEXT. Keep up the good work!

    They Suck Really Bad

The sucks. They pretty much don't teach. Their internet capabilities were even lousy. How are you supposed to be a Technological School and have lousy Internet? Seriously? Some "Teachers" don't know how to answer questions. Besides the fact that there are several learning styles as mentioned in a post below... There are several ways a student learns and Everyone is different. You HAVE TO as a teacher learn to appeal to ALL STUDENTS LEARNING STYLES. They say they teach people to "fish". Lis...

I'm guessing you were in our program some time between February and May. Those months were some turbulent months for us when our network professionals that we hired couldn't solve some of the issue we had with our internet. We weren't dealing with a small home wifi set up. Because of the amount of load we had on our wifi, it constantly crashed. We had spent an obscene amount of money to fix it but the professionals didn't manage to. I was equally as frustrated.
I'm glad to say, however, that we have finally solved it and we have an extremely robust network now.

You have the right to be upset about our teaching. But since you voiced it out, we have done a deep investigation to see the real root of the problem.

    We have done 2 things.

    1. Hire an experienced industry person with experience hiring and mentoring juniors in a massive $100+ million tech company + a university professor who has tons of experience teaching

We decided to hire an academia expert coupled with an industry professional to keep things practical, real and effective for the real world.

    2. We changed our class set-up

Most programming bootcamps don't use mass lectures to teach. We always relied on personally mentorship. We have 10-12 students per mentor and during your batch, we probably had 20-30 students with 2-3 mentors around at the same time.

What we have learnt was that, the model of personal mentorship doesn't work when the classroom was too big and 2-3 mentor had to navigate everyone.

Since June, we have experimented with a model of physically divided 10-12 student and assigned them to a single mentor who will teach and personally mentor every single student.

    Outcome

This has worked extremely well and has probably yield the highest quality we have ever had, and I mean it. In 2015 (last year), we already had students getting jobs at great companies like MindValley, KFIT, Grab and more. Moving forward it will even be better. This year, we have students getting jobs at AirAsia, Maxis, Digi and some are venturing out to Singapore.

I know me saying all this won't help you feel better. I appreciate your feedback because it helped us improve tremendously.

I want to explore with you to see how we can help you now. Please email me at josh@nextacademy.com
