As we kicked off Spring, the international coding bootcamp space saw $34 million in fundraises to help expand their technical skills training efforts. The federal government issued three new bills to expand workforce development and skills-based hiring, and Big Tech banded together in a new AI consortium with the focus of reskilling 100 million workers. We celebrated Earth Day with a roundup of five greentech jobs that you could land after graduating from a coding bootcamp. $34M IN BOOTCAMP FUNDRAISES

• ITWeb reports that South African-bootcamp HyperionDev secured $5 million (R95m) in their latest investment round.
• Data skills development training platform, Modal, announced a $25 million Series A. 
• According to RNZ, NextWork raised $2.3 million in funding. NextWork is an upskilling startup focused on non-tech workers displaced by AI.
• EdTech Review reports that PETE, an AI edtech startup based in Florida, raised $2 million in seed funding to expand its technical skills training platform.  
• App Academy appointed Mari Nazary as its new CEO. 
• Raleigh-based coding bootcamp, Momentum, announced it was closing this month. 
• After thirteen years in operation, the non-profit organization Women Who Code announced they are closing.  

APRIL'S REGULATORY NEWS

• The Consumer Finance Protection Bureau (CFPB) issued an order against BloomTech and its CEO over the bootcamp’s income share agreements. 
• The House passed a bill, the Stronger Workforce for America Act, which aims to update the federal workforce system, the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). The bill would require states to spend a greater share of their WIOA funds on training for workers, and wants states to focus more on real-time labor market data and skills-based hiring.

THE LATEST ON SKILLS-BASED HIRING 

• HR Brew highlighted Randstad’s 2024 Talent Trends Report, which found that 72% of employers believe the skills gap will cause business problems in 2024. The report also found that 80% of companies are shifting to a skills-based hiring model.
• The U.S. Office of Personnel Management has expanded its Pathways Program to include more career opportunities at the federal level through internships and skills-based hiring.  
• According to the Government Executive, the House Oversight and Accountability Committee is looking to include federal contractors in its overall shift to a skills-based hiring model.

BIG TECH RALLIES AROUND AI WORKFORCE TRAINING

• To address AI’s impact on the workforce, a new AI-Enabled Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Workforce Consortium has been created by companies like Cisco, Google, Microsoft, IBM, Accenture, Intel, and more. Khan Academy and AFL-CIO have signed on as advisors. The consortium is committed to helping 100 million workers access AI workforce training. 

4 DIVERSITY IN TECH INITIATIVES

• According to NBC, Enabled Intelligence, an AI technology company, is working with the nonprofit Melwood to 100 data AI data analysts who are neurodiverse. Melwood is offering a 14-week IT bootcamp for folks who are neurodiverse and interested in working in tech. 
• In Canada, CBC reports that the 12-week, subsidized technical training program for underrepresented individuals, Code to Career, is now accepting applications for upcoming cohorts! Code to Career is a partnership between BrainStation and Canada Learning Code, funded by Upskill Canada, and powered by Palette Skills. 
• Black Girls Code has partnered with RiseUp and ServiceNow to start a three-year workforce development initiative in NYC. The initiative includes training programs for young women interested in tech careers. 
• Le Wagon is offering a 6-month, coding program, Speak & Code Academy for expats, migrants, and refugees in Germany. The program will teach students how to code and speak fluent German. 

4 NEW CODING BOOTCAMPS + 2 NEW COURSES

• Upright Education has partnered with Edmonds College to offer technical skills bootcamps in Washington.
• Upright Education also partnered with University of South Carolina this month to offer new technical skills bootcamps. 
• BrainStation has partnered with Canada Learning Code to open new bootcamps in Thunder Bay. 
• Apple announced that it’s opening Apple Developer Academy, a 9-month coding bootcamp, in Bali. 
• The UK-based coding bootcamp, Northcoders, launched a new, part-time coding bootcamp.
• Google Cloud announced a new series of online courses focused on AI, cybersecurity, and data analytics.
