UNC Charlotte Boot Camps

I went to the UNCC Coding Bootcamp without any knowledge about code or programming. It was the best experience I ever had, the teaching and student support staff is amazing, the program is unique and constantly getting updated to fit the current market need in Charlotte area. The Bootcamp gives you tools and skillset to become a great Full Stack Web Developer. However, it is not easy, you have to put in a lot of time to reach your goal.You have to be prepared to work in the team, learning, Google-ing and have fun!

The Coding Boot Camp at UNCC taught me many of the fundamentals of Web Development in a short 6 months. The program was tough at times, and easy at other times. Through the skills I learned during both the technical curriculum, as well as the offerred career curriculum, I was able to procure a position about a month after graduating the course, with having absolutely no coding knowledge prior to signing up. The instructor was amazing, and a great developer with a sense of humor and passion for teaching that really helped during the tougher sections of the class.

The course itself had a few hiccups (my class was the first of its kind at UNCC), but the staff seem dedicated to observing students and listening to feedback in order to smooth out bumps over time. Most assignments have an easy or hard version to help students pace themselves. There was also always someone available to help, whether it was over a dedicated chat system with the peers and instructors, or during office hours before and after class.

My class had a variety of backgrounds and ages; there were folks already in the field trying to sharpen their skills, and beginners like me trying to find a new career. There were 3 main projects in the course that were done in groups, where we chose our own path and subject of the project, based around a set of guidelines and required technologies set forth by the instructor. We were assigned groups for the first two projects, I think based on apparent skill level and/or our individual preferences for front- or back-end (make it pretty, or make it function, basically). The last project was much more loose on whether we worked in groups, or who we paired with if we did, and was much more of a final real-world showcase of what we had all spent so much time learning. Together they built an impressive start for our portfolios.

Like other reviewers have mentioned, this is a legitimately hard course. Depending on your background, this may be one of the harder educational ventures in your life. However, in my opinion, it is absolutely worth it. If you put in the time and effort, you will definitely come out of this program with the skills necessary to succeed in the marketplace. 

That being said, you must approach this program with the proper attitude. If you do the bare minimum, your chances of breaking into development post-graduation are slim. That may sound harsh, but it's the reality of the situation, and if you know this going in you are far more likely to succeed. The good news is, you are constantly surrounded by people who truly want to push you and help you to achieve your goals. TAs, instructors, and career services are committed to helping you every step of the way. I can honestly say this is one of the few times in education where I felt everyone in the organization went above and beyond in terms of guiding me.

So, is this course right for you? If you thrive on a challenge and know coding is the career path for you, then I would wholeheartedly recommend this program. 

This program provides excellent, constantly updated curriculum. In a profession where skill demand changes quickly, this can not be understated. But more importantly, the course teaches you how to think like a developer. I've found that this profession is more of a lifestyle and the learning does not end at graduation.

The instructors are professionals with many years of real-world development experience. They can tell you exactly how the skills they are teaching will be useful in the marketplace. Their insights into things like interview skills & questions as well as the dynamics of working with other developers are invaluable. The advice and support the TA's provided was always very helpful. While not required, my TA would often answer messages quickly outside of class and office hours.

Perhaps the most difficult thing for new developers to do is sell themselves. That’s where Career Services steps-in. While optional, Career Services offers occasional sessions (once or twice per month) to help students with resume development, interview prep, online presence review, etc. These were typically held before class on Saturday. If you complete these assignments, Career Services will actively help with your job search upon graduation. This is a huge benefit because they are well connected with local recruiters and businesses.  

The course is not easy. It is not a magic coding pill that will create a new career out of thin air. It will be stressful and very frustrating at times. But the results will more than make up for the challenges. If you attend the classes AND career sessions, complete the homework assignments (15+ hours per week… try to do the more challenging options) and build a structure to continually learn and grow after graduation, opportunities WILL present themselves.

I was interested in a change of direction for my career, had some previous coding experience, and knew that the internet is just a series of tubes. Before applying, I considered online courses but was more interested in the advantages of being part of an in person group dedicated to the same goal - it was amazing the growth in skill and confidence of the entire cohort! The support was great, from the TAs to Career Services and Student Success. The instructors clearly care about the students and have a passion for the craft. Guiding a group of 25-50 people of diverse backgrounds is not easy and a curriculum that listens to market trends may have to adjust on the fly. Sometimes the road is bumpy. The program is challenging and fast paced, but rewarding if you’re willing and able to commit the time and effort.

Your mileage may vary, but here's my take:

You're starry eyed, you hate your job and this is the way out...I get it. Take a breath and try to do some research so you can to get an idea of what you're getting yourself into. This is a field that requires a commitment to coding for as long as you want to be a professional developer-- always trying new things and always learning. This is a bootcamp that will have you doing homework, and projects in addition to self-study and class-time...in addition to anything else you have going on in your life.

This bootcamp will lay the foundation for your career and expose you to things you never knew you could do, but it and any other bootcamp can not guarantee you a job. With that said, I felt it was money well spent for me. I'm currently employed as a developer,  doing a job that I enjoy very much. As a member of the first cohort, I made friends in the course that I'm still in touch with and I really felt that the bootcamp was all about the students. I loved my instructors, I loved my TA's and the support from career services and student success were on point. There was one point in the course where I just felt I couldn't do it. I had it pretty bad...whatever "it" was. It was nice that I could open up and talk to the people in the bootcamp to help me through it. I was even given a rubber duck at no additional charge by a man named Steve.(this duck may have been a temporary promotion). I still keep that rubber duck on my desk at work, it's an important reminder for me. The campus is in the city so you'll either have to find metered parking or buy a parking pass. We had students from all ages and backgrounds and everyone had their ups and downs, but I would say that everyone left with a new set of skills that they could use at their current job, new job, or in their personal life. If you have a full-time job during the part-time program it is possible, but challenging. Anticipate the bootcamp taking up a chunk of your life for 6 months. I wonder how much more I would have learned in college if the education system was structured this way! Go for it, this is a good one!

I was incredibly pleased with my experience at UNCC's Coding Bootcamp.  The curriculum is up to date and clearly adapts to changing market demands.  My instructors and TA's were also incredibly helpful. 

Before I did this bootcamp I was teaching high school English and seriously needed a change. The boot camp gave me a TON of information across a full stack of development and really helped me understand the things I needed to get into the workforce.  

I do think it is important to go into it knowing you will be working insanely hard for six months straight. You will feel like giving up many times through the work and even if you finish you may feel like giving up trying to get your first development job.  However, if you are willing to work hard and study and nail down technical interview questions the boot camp's curriculum will make you very competitive in today's market. 

On top of the curriculum, many students, TA's and professors work in the local community as developers. If you treat the program like a six month job interview you will make some invaluable connections that will lead to a development career.  

I absolutely recommend this program.  It literally changed my life.  

Attending the bootcamp changed my life for the better, I truly had a wonderful experience from start to finish. It was also one of the hardest things I have ever attempted to do, but it put me in the position to succeed and that is extremely valuable. Like other reviewers have mentioned putting in time and effort is the only way to get any return on your investment. I recommend the program to anyone who has the drive to make a change in their life, wants a chance to change careers or just better their situation.

The cirriculum is heavily monitered and allows you to get a solid foundation to build upon. The instrutors and TA's are fantastic and will do everything in their power to help you grow as a developer and succeed as a programmer. You will learn enough material to feel comfortable in any jr. developer role in the market.

The support system in place through TA's, Instructors, Student Success Managers and tutoring, is what helps this program stand out. You will always feel like you have help along the path and that is another reason the program is successfully placing students after completing the program. Along with classroom support you will have access to career services support and this is invaulable - help with interviewing, working with recruiters, resume building, your brand, and your online presense. It makes this worth every penny.

One of my greatest takeaways from the program are the people - the connections. The ability to work in teams, learn development workflow, practice soft skills, and prepare for being in the industry. I still keep in touch with classmates, who are now close friends and people I feel thankful to have met. I tutor students across the country working through the same program, it is battle tested! I worked as a teaching assistant for a short time and have seen the program from different sides, it puts everything in front of you to succeed if you are willing to strive for better.

I am now working full-time in the industry at the job of my dreams, all the hard work paid off. I am in a position to grow and achieve so much success in my career.

Finally to sum up my book here - treat this endevour like learning a new craft - learning anything takes practice. Programming isn't easy, that's why it pays well and it takes a special individual to do it. Learn to break down problems, absorb knowledge, if your stucks GOOGLE IT (get good at it), read documentation, ask for help, and work with your peers.

I enrolled in the second session of the coding bootcamp after a lot of hesitation and was given a good sales pitch about future employers lining up at my door and all of the opportunities we would have to get involved in the tech scene in Charlotte. 

I felt very much like we got a very broad base of knowledge that many employers don’t think is enough, and now there are hundreds of us with the same education so every resume gets sent back with a “Sorry, we just have too many junior developers with the same credentials and no experience.”

The instructors were great but I think it was a waste of money as I am now in debt and still can’t find a job. 

I joined the Bootcamp with no knowledge in web development or any sort of coding at all, with exception of some prior C++ from high school/college. I took a break from University a few years back, and was absolutely terrified to go back into the classroom again. However, the transition of going back into the classroom was not a struggle whatsoever. 

The instructors and and TA's were absolutely INCREDIBLE. They were all extrememly helpful, and 99% of the time they were available to help with any issue I had. The student success advisor, as well as our career services advisor, were VERY helpful as well. Anita gave all of us the necessary tools to find a job in the always growing job market.

The program itself is tough, that's for sure. It's not for everyone, but if you're willing to put in the time, effort, and work, you'll come out being an incredible developer. You come out of the course being knowledgable in both front end and back end development, which will give you the upperhand when applying for jobs, as well as building applications! 

Yes, it might take some time to find a job afterwards, but you just have be patient and keep coding. Yes, I'm still seeking employment, but it's only been a few weeks since I've graduated, and I already have some job interviews lined up. So to look back at how I was when I first started to now, I think that says a lot about this program. 
 

I highly reccomend taking this course. It is WELL worth the money. Think of it as an investment for your future self!

I went into this class with a bit of a different expectation... I was looking to be able to finally realize my dream of becoming self-employed and start my own business with the tools provided by the full stack web development course. I cannot say enough good things about my instructor Jeff, as he was extremely knowledgeable, always patient, and well worth the investment. The class was very challenging, and it does cover a lot right off the start, but if you are willing to put in the time and effort, network with the right people, go to meetup events, and put yourself out there, it should not be to hard to find a job. Do not go into this course with the expectation that they are going to teach you everything you need to know to become a master full stack developer within 3 or 6 months. Think of it as retraining yourself to be able to adapt to any language and it gives you the tools and broad understanding to teach yourself after the course. It is up to you how you use the skills once you get out. I really enjoyed the class, met some great people, and My company should be up and running mid-end July 2018. Once I have it up and running, would be more than happy to share here what you will be able to do once you graduate this course. If you are serious about starting on a new career path or just getting started as a developer, I think it is a great start. I realize it is a bit of an investment, and to all those who are hesitant, just know I was right there with you, but consider the fact that over any other educational pursuit, programming and tech is by far the fastest growing market on earth right now, and if you want to stay relevant, don’t pick a major or take classes that will not directly lead to you being able to find a job. Take something that is a marketable skill that will allow you to make a living afterwards. This class will help you do just that if you are willing to show up every day with the willingness to learn and work hard. Good Luck.
