    My Entire Honest Experience

    My Entire Experience

Before I went to DevMountain, I was doing consulting for 3 years at a software company out of Austin, TX. I was making good money and on top of it; it was a super laid-back job. Everything was chill.

Until I got bored of it.

The work got repetitive, I felt like my mind was going numb from boredom, my career projectory was ok but not high enough to where I wanted it to be. I wasn't happy going to work everyday.

    That all changed...

Need to know how to program

This is by no means a beginners boot camp.  The pace is very fast and if you don't catch onto one of the many concepts you will fall behind and never catch up.  I would recommend 2 years programming experience before you attend this boot camp.

    Hi,

I'm sorry the bootcamp seemed a bit too fast paced. We've spent a lot of time refining and iterating on the curriculum, it's gone through a lot and is pretty polished at the moment.

I'm going to have to disagree with your 2 years programming recommendation. We have at least 75–80% of incoming immersive students who have little-to-no experience programming prior to pre-course work, and with our current placement numbers hovering around 85%, I'd say we're doing a pretty good job of delivering on our mission to make an impactful, accessible experience.

Finally, something that many students don't realize, is that we offer multiple opportunities to "catch up," if you're struggling, including repeating portions of the curriculum or taking the entire course a second time, completely free of charge.

If this is what you're looking for, please let me know and we'll get you into some weeks that you need to repeat that maybe went by a bit too fast.

Please let me know, and best of luck to you. cahlan@devmtn.com

The cake is a bit of a lie.

Before reading this review, I want to say that all of the facts I've provided below came from searching around on LinkedIn profiles, talking to other members of my cohort and the people that work/teach at DevMountain. I'm not saying they aren't all true, just that this is all to the best of my knowledge and research. For example, there may be a few more people that have found jobs I don't know about but haven't updated their LinkedIn profiles or otherwise ...

    Hi Anonymous,

I'd love to see how we can help you. Please drop me a line at cahlan[at]devmountain.com

We definitely don't expect the majority of students to have jobs in a single month after the class. Getting a job is hard work, and the industry standard is typically 90 days before tracking placement statistics. However, at the time of this writing we have 94 hired students out of 104 Web Immersive students who indicated they were looking for employment. So I stand by our placement rate and our outcomes. We wouldn't be here if that weren't the case.

We definitely do not select mentors based on working on our internal tools. We try to keep mentors not just busy helping students, but busy building things so they don't grow stagnant in their skills. This is a challenge, and oftentimes the best "work" we can give them is to help us build better internal tools for students. Some of the recent tools mentors have worked on are paying large dividends for current and future classes. And we don't look at being selected as a mentor vs. not being selected as a success/failure, like you imply. There are many talented, smart students who will have great careers that we don't select for a multitude of reasons, including because their personalities don't fit well with the required attributes of a mentor (patience, empathy, good communication, etc.)

I'm sorry you felt the job assistance was poor. We have a great employment specialist, Jeff Chapman, whom I'd love for you to reach out to. He has a lot of tools and has seen a lot of students get jobs, so he knows what it takes. He's a large reason why so many of our students have jobs. Jeff is unaware of anyone he hasn't contacted, so please try again to contact Jeff (jeff[at]devmountain.com) so we can get you the help you need. Both Jeff and I have tried reaching out to you via email via the address you provided. Please reply back and let us know how we can help.

Finally, we definitely rely a lot on the individuals' own "personal study and perseverance." It's a hard program. We expect a lot out of students. We can only take students as far as they're willing to go. The students who work insanely hard, stay positive, and communicate with us are the ones who are the most successful. We've seen it time and time again.

Again, I think there are lots of ways we can help. Please drop me a line and let's talk.

    Not the best

I'm disappointed to say the least. I'm also not surprised about all the negative reviews lately. When I signed up for Dev Mountain they had good reviews and things looked promising. My experience was different. The marketing department blatantly lies and I'm confident is the reason behind a lot of these positive reviews. The lead instructor who I was excited to learn from left a few months ago and the replacement is still trying to get adjusting. Mentors are nothing more t...

    Hi Anonymous,

I'm sorry your cohort didn't work out well for you. I'd love to chat to see how we can help. cahlan[at]devmountain.com

Our mentors, although former students, are one of the reasons we have a 90% placement. Our instructors are simply not able to keep up with the majority of student requests, and the mentors are in a great position to help, having gone through the program so recently. There are a lot of studies that reinforce this idea of peer learning, and if it didn't (normally) work so well, we wouldn't do it.

I don't see any specific examples of how you felt like our marketing was deceiving, but please let me know so I can either clarify or fix those concerns.

Finally, I'd love for you to come back, free of charge, and have another crack at it. I'm confident we can get you the resources you need to get where you want to go. Would love to talk.

Waste of my money and time

I am really surprised that DevMountain has such a high score. After reading several reviews online I decided to attend DevMountain thinking I made a great choice. However, I was really disapointed by the program. Let's first talk about instructors. They claim on their website that they have several website but I only saw on full-time instructor and several guest speakers. Then they claim that they have lectures all day by the instructors which is not true. Instructor only gives lecture...

    Anonymous,

I'm really sorry you were so disappointed. Let me see if I can address some of your concerns:

I would never advocate a learning environment where we have "lectures all day." That would be a really poor learning experience, and you wouldn't be very good at actually building anything if you simply went to lectures all day. We want to get your hands on the keyboard as much as possible.

I'm sorry your class seemed over-crowded, we usually do a really good job at keeping student help requests in check, but there are definitely times where it gets busy.

I can definitely vouch for our placement rates. At the time of this writing, of the 104 web dev immersive students that indicated they are looking for jobs within three months of graduation, 94 have been hired by tech companies. So I stand by our placement rate of 90%, and we have some great job placement people and resources in place to ensure that our students' outcomes remain very positive. Have you reached out to Jeff lately?

I'd love to chat to see if there's a way we can help you get to where you want to go. Please drop me a line at cahlan[at]devmountain.com and let's talk.

Use Pluralsight and don't waste your money

Devmountain is a great program for those who already understand code and have experience coding. I went into the cohort thinking I could start from a beginners level and gain enough experience to get a job. This was not the case at all. All the people who came into the class in the same situation as me either quit weeks in or finished the class and weren't enough close to having the skill set to get a job. If you are going to do the class, make sure you already know how ...

I'm sorry you didn't have a great experience, Anonymous. Please reach out to me at cahlan[at]devmountain.com so we can help.

I can definitely speak to us educating beginners, because many of my favorite success stories from students come from those who had little-to-no experience when they started. Here's a recent one I received from G. Roberts:

"I'm much happier in my job, I'm in a field that I will be able to find a job where I can work from home which will be extremely valuable next year when my wife goes to grad school and I can take a larger role at home.

It's just insane thinking about the financial and personal gains that have happened since I joined Dev Mountain, before I wasn't happy in my job, I was stressed out because I knew if my employer wanted to get rid of me they could easily replace me therefore taking away my bargaining power. I was worried about finding a new job with a better employer.

Short story, best money I've ever spent, my wife and I are extremely grateful for the program that you guys have built, I seriously think about it everyday and how much it's changed my life and my family."

If you didn't get what you needed to out of your class, let me know. We have lots of resources to help you get what you need and on the path you're looking for.

Devmountain is really great for independent learners and go-getters and not super great for those who like a more structured environment

I ended up going to the first cohort in Phoenix in November and while I owe a lot to Devmountain I think this review will help other people learn from my mistakes.

Here are a few issues that I found while I was there:

    1. There are no markers to which to judge your progress. You have afternoon projects to do every day and the only gauge you really have is if you understand the content or not. We kept being told "dont worry once personal projects come around you'll get it". ...

    Waste of money and time

I had the same experience as the other bad reviews. The course was disorganized and the mentors that we worked with were former graduates with zero job experience and didn't know the answer to questions. Half of the class was spent working on projects with no guidance from the instructors. So you are paying for 6 weeks of poor instruction. The person you meet with to discuss concerns told me to use code lab or code academy if I wanted to learn. Recruiters won't talk to you once they hear you ...

    Hi Anonymous,

I'm sorry you had an underwhelming experience. We're very happy with our mentors and the support that they give to students. It's proven to be an effective model time and time again as our students continue to get gainful employment upon graduation. If you are not one of these who's been able to get a job, please reach out to me directly and we'll get you on the path to employment as soon as possible. (cahlan@devmounta.in)

Working on projects is a critical part of your development. We always have a team of mentors to help you work through problems in your projects, but it is absolutely essential that you get hands-on experience and a portfolio. Employers need to see evidence of what you can do and build, and during projects is when we see the most dramatic improvements in students' understanding and skill.

I'm surprised with your assessments of recruiters being turned off by your affiliation with DevMountain, especially when our most recent hiring event in Provo two weeks ago (at the time of this writing) had the most employers (nearly 100) of any of our hiring events ever, with a handful of students receiving offers at the time of the event or within hours of the event being over.

Again, I'm sorry you didn't have a great experience. Please reach out to me so we can make it right. (cahlan@devmounta.in)

    Very disappointing experience

Really disappointing experience with these folks -- they seemed so nice when I was emailing them and talking on the phone with them about attending the web dev immersive program, but when I showed up to start the program I found that the free housing wasn't livable (it had wall-to-wall carpeting throughout the apt, and was so musty and moldy that my boyfriend and I both got migraines from being there for less than an hour). Hi Bernadette,

We understand the sacrifices our students make to go through our program and so when expectations aren't met, we don't take that lightly.

We also don't want to get into a back and forth on the details of what happened here, because we believe our housing team went above and beyond to accommodate your needs, and it seems that the only resolution you'd be satisfied with is a full refund of your deposit, which goes against our policies. Our staff does everything within their power to resolve concerns, but to be fair to all our students, we have to stand by our policies.

As one of the highest rated bootcamps in the country, we stand by the quality of our program and our student housing. Consistently, the feedback we get on our free housing is that it is not only livable but exceeds our students' expectations.

We would still love to resolve your situation and help you reach your goal to become a developer. You can always transfer your course deposit to a future cohort or DevMountain Campus. Please reach out to us by contacting admin@devmountain.com.
